2012 New Years Resolutions

Griff • Dec 28, 2011 11:06 am
I never do this but I believe it is time for a serious New Years resolution. My concern is both global and personal. When I reflect on our countries meat production, I see a flawed system. I have the land and could make the time to produce my families meat supply. We always did this when I was a kid so in a time when some 80% of all the antibiotics sold in the US go into farm animals, I resolve to produce my own meat.
Rhianne • Dec 28, 2011 2:47 pm
...or do something with your own meat.

Sorry.
Sundae • Dec 28, 2011 3:28 pm
Mine? Oh God. Seriously. Stop drinking.
The rest can follow.
Dad is doing the same apparently.
At the very least I can be in a personal competition not to drink before he does. But then I think he might end up with a better incentive than me as I am worried about his health.

He's been quite ill over Christmas. Mum says it's the drink but I know it's not. He's had to make yet another hole in his belt in order to hold up the jeans he bought two months ago. That's not a hangover. And he really paced himself last night, but couldn't eat at lunchtime, his appetite is shot.

Sorry, drifting a bit there.

That's terrible Sundae. I'm so sorry.

I produce quite a lot of meat. Unfortunately, cutting it off would be quite painful, and the other way to consume it is much less enjoyable than eating.

That may end up being Pete's resolution as well.

I am going to try to speak less, and I'm going to try very hard to not eat at either of the McDonald's restaurants in town. I'm not trying to lose weight or anything, it's just that they're owned by the same people, and one of those McD's just pissed me off one time too many.

Apparently he has a hospital appointment in the New Year.
Although I think Mum said that was about his prostate..?

Anyway, she's on the case and she'll go with him to make sure he asks all the right questions.

She hasn't done surgery (yet). She's been trying to get by with the exercises the PT gave her but something has to give. Anybody try acupuncture?
regular.joe • Dec 29, 2011 9:35 am
Not trying to loose weight. I will ride a min of 100 miles per week on the bike and ride a century a month.
HungLikeJesus • Dec 29, 2011 10:12 am
I will try to be more productive at work and spend less time on the Cellar.

Griff;783537 wrote:

For a different reason, but yes.
First time I relaxed so entirely in an unrelaxing setting that I fell asleep.
I thought it was amazing.

Next time, very relaxed but without sleep.
Still amazingly positive.

Third time, different place, different time, was extremely distracted by the people around me.

Last time I was so incredibly stressed at other people's mouth noises (Shawnee is my twin) that I was desperate for the session to end so I could leave. Simple courtesy kept me there, so I didn't harsh their groove, but I could quite happily have stabbed them all in the throat for being so fucking disgusting.

So, yeah.
I'm not entirely convinced about acupuncture.
For me to get wound up to that pitch, when pins were supposed to be calming me (and the effects were to last a WEEK!) kinda destroyed my faith.

This was all part of detox.
I walked out of the final session and got drunk.
Which was my own choice of course, but it really was Objective Not Accomplished as far as the session went.

Of course it might have been the practitioners, given my positive experiences were by the same people and my negatives ones were too.
If ya get me.

I am going to write articles for cracked.com or websites like it. they may not be get published, it may not be worth publishing, and they may not accept stuff written on used toilet paper, but as the internet is my wittness i will do it! i already started a few, and one of them has to be finished at some point, which i am hoping will be earlier then 2013.

i am going to gain financial independence, and this time around not loose it impolsively on traveling/failedstartups/women ! (4rd time the charm right?)

Me three. I tried to post words to that effect last night, then the puter crashed, then I figured I couldn't afford it, but I do hate the current farming methods so very very much....

Thanks guys. I appreciate the support.

I suspect you aren't going into the meat business, but if you are, I would also be interested. Although I don't have a stand alone freezer.

I don't typically make resolutions, I just end up disappointing myself. There's the long running reminder every year to make sure I fill out comment cards or put a word in for the manager if I get great service somewhere. That's really just become a way of life, because I know how good it feels.

When it comes to ME, I know I need to be kinder to myself, so maybe I'll cut back on my self-deprecating humor. Maybe I'll say a nice thing or two to myself now and again. You know, real stuff, not like bragging about my great eyebrows, *snicker* things I actually DO. Positive affirmations.

Because I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and goshdarnit, a couple people like me.
(Crap this is going to be harder than I thought.) ;)
Griff • Dec 30, 2011 8:52 am
I don't expect to turn it into a business as scaling things up would require more water and feed resources than I presently want to commit to. Extra animals could, however, create a way to pay for professional butchering and provide some income.
Clodfobble • Dec 30, 2011 10:07 am
Yeah, I kind of thought part of the barrier to doing beef, at least, was slaughtering a single cow made for way too much meat for one family. Chickens and lambs you can do on a small scale, but you can't really raise a quarter of a cow.
Stormieweather • Dec 30, 2011 10:07 am
Well I'll be serious. This is more of a plan than a list of resolutions. Sort of a "to-do" list.

FITNESS:

1) Log in to MFP every day (and log my food/exercise)
2) Track my progress with graphs and spreadsheets (did best this year when I did this)
3) Reach my goal weight (no more stopping because this is "good enough").
4) Be able to run 3 miles without stopping to walk.
5) Run a 5k race.

PERSONAL:

1) Spend more time enjoying life and less time pursuing pointless activities (ie: surfing the internet).
2) Spend as much time as possible with my children and partner. Kids grow up so fast!
3) Get back into my jewelry-making.
4) Remember to smile, smell the flowers, pet more puppies and don't sweat the small stuff.
5) Get some necessary dental work done.

FINANCIAL:

1) Save X dollar per month, per my long term financial plan.
2) Take certain steps towards rebuilding credit.
3) Continue to look for ways to cut the grocery bill.
4) Locate a couple of legal documents necessary in order to renew my license in 2013.

ENTERTAINMENT:

1) Take at least 1 vacation

I only noticed the resoulutions thread.
infinite monkey • Dec 30, 2011 10:40 am
Oh, but that was only one thread by him re: resolutions.

Two threads for for his poem, and I get why.
monster • Dec 30, 2011 10:58 am
JBK starts a new thread for each of his poems and musings. It's his style. He doesn't really seem to read much of the board, so he probably doesn't notice the other threads that would be appropriate to add his input to rather than starting a new thread. could be related to his other issues -it's kind of an introspective style. imo

I think I might start starting a new thread for each thought I have.......

........but if I whittled it down to each original thought.... *crickets*
infinite monkey • Dec 30, 2011 11:19 am
Yeah, that's true.

I'm glad JBK feels he can contribute, though. It wasn't about him. It was about me and my insecurity crap. Which I was resolving to resolve, but have already unresolved. ;)
monster • Dec 30, 2011 11:24 am
You have another 48 hours to practice......

Do you think I should resolve to reply to every single post during 2012?
infinite monkey • Dec 30, 2011 11:28 am
I double dare ya!
HungLikeJesus • Dec 30, 2011 11:30 am
Would that include responding to your own responses?

That could put you in an infinite loop and you might explode.
infinite monkey • Dec 30, 2011 11:32 am
Infinite will ALWAYS make you explode. Um, er... ;)

Sorry to interrupt here :)
My resolutions, in no particular order, are:
To continue swimming three times a week until I disappear or stop shrinking, whichever happens first (got Xmas present of swimming goggles)
To revert to pre-Christmas eating/drinking patterns
To keep my accounts more up to date
To blow or squeeze a musical instrument every day
To snog my husband more :hugnkiss:
Griff • Dec 30, 2011 1:27 pm
Nice list! :)

Ya know...

from here

On Lopez Island, west and north of Seattle, the first of these fully approved mobile slaughter units was put into operation in 2002 with a USDA nod and federal inspector on board. Since that time the USDA has certified eight others for large animals across the country.

I don't know your exact location (don't need to really) but I did want you to know that there is a precedent for how to get this part done. In the story I heard about the mobile slaughter faciliity, a USDA approved facility, the rig would be in a given location on a given day, and farmers would bring their animals to the trailer. This was the routine for farmers who could not justify the trailer coming to them, a situation I imagine you're in now, or would at least be in at the outset. This gives the farmer a way to produce certified meat for retail or wholesale trade. The certification might be irrelevant to Clodfobble, or me, but a local restaurant might "need" it in order to sell it in the dining room. That's a way to make it pay.
Griff • Dec 30, 2011 2:38 pm
Something may have changed in the PA regulatory environment, which was shuttering local shops in favor of the big guys. A couple of locals just opened a butcher shop a few miles from here. There was a piece in the county paper that indicated that they were going to try to be really flexible and try to connect producers and consumers along with helping establish farmer to farmer connections. The web of farm to farm contact has kind of broken down locally with so many farms failing.
