The NEW Bambi thread

I can't remember where I put my other deer killing thread so I made a new one.

Today was the next to last day of Rifle (buck only) season. I made it to my tree stand about half an hour before sunset and saw three Does. :(

I spoke with my mentor who said he hasn't seen a Buck in over a week. His brother shot a 4 pointer then. They go nocturnal when the hunting pressure builds.

I don't think I'll have a chance to hunt tomorrow (seems hardly worth it, considering almost no one has seen any bucks lately) Though, at my friend's tree stand here in town (he's got 10 acres with a nearby swamp and creek) I can bowhunt, and being in the village there is no real hunting pressure on them. Case in point: Last week I loosed an arrow at a deer and he ducked under it, it probably barely creased him. He jumped up, spun around, looked left and right and left and right, walked over to the arrow, smelled it, and then went back to eating. I couldn't reach my quiver without scaring him off.

So there is this one Buck who comes to the field just at dark, the hunting ends at sundown, technically. Though with the snow and moon it is pretty damn bright. Whatever. I may try tomorrow night.

Then, on Monday late bow season and muzzle loading season (either sex - but basically it means Does, since spike horns and yearlings are left to grow another year) begins for a week or so. I haven't got a muzzle loader but my mentor says he may be able to scrounge one up for me.

That would be cool.

As things stand, I'm looking at vegetarianism in my future...

Them carrots are getting wiley this time of year too. We had a big hunting scandal near here. A bunch of gas workers were jacking bucks at night and taking little if any meat off the carcasses. Prosecution to follow. They shot a lot of animals and wasted a lot of meat, people are pissed.

All you saw were Does, but you were looking for Doesn't?

I hope they get the spank ray.
Up here the DEC has mechanical / robotic bucks set up near roads. A-holes will pull over and shoot at them from their vehicles or on the shoulder. DEC then busts them and they lose their gun(s) and vehicle, a pile of cash, and several months of freedom.

You don't wanna know what they do to people caught digging carrots...

@Jim: She can mail a steak but not that other thing.

I have Bambi in my fridge as I type. My older brother shot a deer, at the compound, and my dad made jerky out of him. The deer, not my brother.

Today was the last day of deer and bear hunting season (late bow and muzzleloader) my mentor lent me one of his muzzleloaders, an old TC Renegade. What a nice gun.
Anyhow, it was a somewhat bittersweet end to the season. I only saw a few deer and they were out of range. There is more to the story but I'm saving that for another time.

My mentor tried drving the deer to me today but there were none around, I had to call it a day at noon and hadn't shot anything. Yesterday, someone was shootign at a large doe and at the moment he pulled the trigger a button buck jumped in front of the doe. The round went through the button buck and int the doe. The guy got a twofer!
So they gave me the little buck and I put my tag on it.

I just skinned and butchered it. Tomorrow I'll finish processing the meat. I'm on the fence about what to do with the fat, render it and make soap or make deer tallow candles? I took the little sinew from the hind legs and was unsure of the sinew on the back straps. I think I may have mistaken it for fat or fascia and cut it all up. C'est la viand

The deer must be awful tame if he can get them into his car.

Can you imagine that woman as someone's ex-wife?

"C'mon baby, we're going on a special hunt today"

"Where's daddy?"

"We'll be seeing daddy real soon. That's why this hunt is so special."
