Will I eventually disappear?

limey • Nov 11, 2011 3:44 pm
So, what with eating and drinking more sensibly and an hour's swim three time a week I'm losing about a pound every couple of weeks. Everyone says you should make a lifestyle change rather than "go on a diet" and that's what I've done. I like this new lifestyle and I want to keep it. But what happens when I reach my target weight (currently on schedule for next May)? Am I going to have to add a bag of crisps on a regular basis in order to stop losing weight? I don't want to do that, so will I just disappear altogether?
(being the nerd I am I could give you a date for that if you want to put it in your diaries ...).
HungLikeJesus • Nov 11, 2011 3:47 pm
Is the weight loss a linear function with time, or has it been decreasing?
Clodfobble • Nov 11, 2011 3:51 pm
As you weigh less, you will also do less work just walking around and breathing and everything else. Equilibrium will hit before you disappear. :)
limey • Nov 11, 2011 3:51 pm
Weight loss is variable, but not decreasing with time.
limey • Nov 11, 2011 3:54 pm
Yabbut Clod I was told that muscle uses more energy so now I'm fitter all my muscle is using more calories than my fatty globules were so as I'm also eating fewer calories I'll just waste away!
BigV • Nov 11, 2011 3:54 pm
machine translation is a comic failure. you're good to go for the foreseeable future.

"The vodka is good, but the meat is rotten."
limey • Nov 11, 2011 4:34 pm
BigV what were you trying to translate?
BigV • Nov 11, 2011 5:08 pm
"The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak." from English to Russian then turn that Russian back into the same translator to get English again.

Limey, you will eventually disappear but that will have more to do with what you know than what you eat.

Yes. When your heart stops beating.
HungLikeJesus • Nov 12, 2011 10:32 am
If you post the data we can figure out when that will be.
ZenGum • Nov 12, 2011 6:16 pm
Wait! Is the snark a boojum?
infinite monkey • Nov 12, 2011 7:07 pm
What's a boojum, zenjum?

If the reports coming in are true, we were all unappeared a long time ago, or never appeared at all.

I have to process all this existentialism. ;)

Carrol, Lewis. 1874. The Hunting of the Snark (Fit the third). http://www.gutenberg.org/files/13/13-h/13-h.htm

"He remarked to me then," said that mildest of men,
"'If your Snark be a Snark, that is right:
Fetch it home by all means—you may serve it with greens,
And it's handy for striking a light.

"'You may seek it with thimbles—and seek it with care;
You may hunt it with forks and hope;
You may threaten its life with a railway-share;
You may charm it with smiles and soap—'"

("That's exactly the method," the Bellman bold
In a hasty parenthesis cried,
"That's exactly the way I have always been told
That the capture of Snarks should be tried!")

"'But oh, beamish nephew, beware of the day,
If your Snark be a Boojum! For then
You will softly and suddenly vanish away,
And never be met with again!'
Stormieweather • Nov 12, 2011 8:47 pm
Nope, you won't disappear. Your weight and your calorie burn will eventually meet at a happy medium and you'll stop losing. Great way to lose weight, by the way!!
limey • Nov 13, 2011 4:47 am
Yabbut how, why? I have more muscles, which burn more calories than fat does. I'm eating fewer calories than I'm using on a daily basis and enjoying what I eat so don't intend to change anything there. How, how does the thing even out in the end?
(Oh, and Stormie, I know. I'm extremely lucky that this is all enjoyable!)
Undertoad • Nov 13, 2011 11:10 am
Cos it takes more calories to maintain a big-ass body than a skinny one.
monster • Nov 13, 2011 12:05 pm
yes, you'll have less weight to haul around so will lose fewer calories in everyday activities and when doing the same amount of exercise.

wtg on the weightloss!
limey • Nov 13, 2011 2:26 pm
Thank you everyone. I'm just maintaining a little low-level anxiety that my target and my body's target weights may not be the same ...:eek6:

All of those people
Everywhere
Ever so needing
Where's it all leading
Tell me where
Nothing insincere
I'd better have pity
I'd better go easy
I never will lay down
While my heart is still beating
Where it's all leading
Walk on air
Am I still dreaming
Words to spare
Lost in their meaning
I'd better be strong now
I'd better stop dreaming
My heart has flown away now
Will it never stop bleeding?

:hedfone: Fab, Footie! I don't hear enough Roxy Music!
Undertoad • Nov 13, 2011 4:42 pm
OK Zicato, that's a Wal. I had never actually heard one and identified it as such. Now I'm going to have to become successful, because I will need a vintage Wal bass before I die.
Aliantha • Nov 13, 2011 5:39 pm
I used to have some Roxy music and Brian Ferry CD's, but I left them at the house I shared with the first dickhead I moved in with when I left.

I think I'll have to replace them some time, and my van Morrisons.

Change in Weight = Caloric intake - Caloric burnt

If you hit your target weight and don't want to lose anymore try adding 100 - 300 healthy calories a day to your diet or start a lower calorie burning exercise (swimming can burn a lot of calories).

But good job so far.
limey • Nov 15, 2011 1:31 pm
I swam a mile again today in 1 hour 4 minutes. Six minutes less than last time ... :)
Sundae • Nov 15, 2011 1:41 pm
Lose as much as you can, Limey.
Then snack on pemmican.

That's what you eat that far North, right?

My only fear is how tiny you will be compared to me.
Remember when I pretended I would lose weight for our meeting last year?
Turns out I was pretending this year too.
monster • Nov 15, 2011 4:30 pm
You still have one month. you could lose a stone. if you really wanted to.
limey • Nov 15, 2011 4:38 pm
I don't think anyone will ever describe me as "tiny".
When I spent five months living in Russia just after the putsch that toppled Gorbachev (now there's a opener, if ever there was one!) I was 10 1/2 stone (147lb) by the time I left (I'm 5'10" tall). That was eating less and moving more too. But it was tooo thin. My poor mother was horrified.
limey • Nov 25, 2011 4:25 am
:jig:YAY!:jig:
181lbs (12st 13lb).
27 gone since about January, 7 more to go!
monster • Nov 25, 2011 11:13 am
hurrah! Well done.

Another one of mine disappeared this morning too (total 15 since May). My jeans are too loose. no danger of me wasting away, though.... I'd like to loose another 30, I haven't been working out as much as I need to since the pool closed. I get a stab of envy every time you post that you've been for a swim! Keep up the good work.
limey • Nov 25, 2011 2:52 pm
That's one stab, three times a week, Monster, unless we're away ....
limey • Jan 21, 2012 4:24 am
Well, Christmas got in the way a little but I have now definitely lost 2 stone (28lb) since this time last year and weigh 12st12lb (that's 180lb for you yanks).
That little Christmas reversal? GONE!! :jig:
Back on track? YOU BET I AM!! :cheerldr:
(This is the only place that I publicly boast about my success, so indulge me folks!)
monster • Jan 21, 2012 7:35 am
I've found a new swimming spot, I'll be catching you up.....

That's seriously impressive, limey :) Well Done!
Sundae • Jan 21, 2012 7:55 am
I am all for indulging you!

You looked just fine at Christmas; I'm used to be the tallest in any group of women and you tower over Dani and me. So I have never considered your weight.

If you are happy with this loss - and the vibe I got is that you are - then I am all for it too. Good for you.
limey • Jan 21, 2012 8:03 am
I've been able to get away with it, Sundae, because of my height and my rack (lots of stuff hides in the shadows there!).
What I'm really happy about is that I don't feel I'm "on a diet" so nothing will change when I get to my target weight (hence the "will I disappear" question). I am very lucky to have the time to swimming as often and for as long as I do, too!
And thank you, Monster!

DITTO! :D And congrats on your weight lost. That certainly is an accomplishment to be proud of. :thumb: I'm glad that you intend to keep up with your exercise even when you reach your target weight. Btw, what is that again?
limey • Jan 21, 2012 5:02 pm
Allegedly 174lbs but, as I've said, I like the lifestyle so I'll carry on with it and see where it leads me.

I hope I can be as successful as you limey. :) xxx
ZenGum • Jan 21, 2012 6:55 pm
If a person in Scotland can go swimming three times a week, Ali, you should be looking at coming ashore three times a week. ;)
Aliantha • Jan 21, 2012 7:04 pm
I should be going swimming, but that's an activity that's hard to do when you've got a midget to keep an eye on. The beach is only 2 minutes walk away from the house and everything. It's so stupid. :(
classicman • Jan 21, 2012 7:12 pm
meh, no problem....
monster • Jan 21, 2012 7:42 pm
Do they not have leisure pools with creche facilities there? Could you hire a babysiter? could you go in the evening and have the older kids babysit?

Landshark cage!
limey • Jan 22, 2012 11:40 am
Ali, my only advice is to work out a regime (both food and exercise) that suits you and that you enjoy. Only you can find out what that is. Good luck!
