7 Billionth person to be born on Monday

Undertoad • Oct 29, 2011 5:58 pm
Earth pop. now apx 7000000000

Many will wring their hands at this.

But here, at the Cellar, we watched that video from that dude;

That dude who showed how, once cultures advance a little, their lifespan goes way up and the number of kids in their families goes way down. From seven children per family to two children per family.

At one point the population curve looked like a J and many people projected that this was a disaster of tremendous proportions.

But at the same time, global fertility rates and the number of babies popping out started to fall:

Now they've realized that the curve is going to be more of an S than a J. It's not that the original population scientists were wrong with their science. It's that there were forces at work they hadn't anticipated.

Maybe there are forces that we don't understand. There may be human instincts to keep reproduction levels high enough to ensure the survival of the tribe. If life is hard, you need seven children to keep the it going. If life is easy, you only need two.

What will they win?
footfootfoot • Oct 29, 2011 6:39 pm
Monday Monday can't trust that day
Monday Monday 7 billionth baby just popped out they say
Oh Sunday morning, it gave me no warning of what was to be...
That Monday morning there'd be 7 billion babies.

Also, the healthier they are, the more likely they are to have multiple births. Even after removing the influence of in vitro procedures, the rate has gone up relatively dramatically in just the last 100 years.

What if, in another 1000-2000 years, we're all having litters of 3-4 at a time, with gestation periods of 14 months?

I'm the 3,125,391,604th person, according to this.
Undertoad • Oct 29, 2011 9:55 pm
Clod, mankind should have all the genetic stuff worked out by then, to produce whatever is best so... what would you women prefer to birth, four 3-pounders or two 6-pounders?
Trilby • Oct 30, 2011 8:42 am
I would prefer that men birth them. Whatever the poundage.
Clodfobble • Oct 30, 2011 9:26 am
It ain't just the birth, it's the next 18 years. Better to engineer a larger birthing canal in the first place. And of course, no one wants a worldwide "hotdog in a hallway" epidemic, so now we have to engineer bigger penises, too. But I hear that research has been well underway for decades, so it's alright.

I'm below 3,000,000,000. I didn't realize that you were so much younger than me.

You're still just a babe, babe;).

I am babe-a-licious.

And I didn't think you were that much older ...

When you were born, you were the:
3,817,332,574th person alive on Earth

78,029,780,840th person to have lived since history began

I wonder how they define a person.

Clearly, according to UT's chart, we'll get to negative growth soon and then we'll be right. All this technology, and not so many people.

As long as we don't blow ourselves up first, we'll be fine. :)

Maybe, but: declining population has its own special set of problems, including economic decline, and the imbalance of fewer youngsters having to pay for more medical support for the elderly.

http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/10/24/us-population-decline-idUSTRE79N2MW20111024

...in fact improvements in food production and technology have allowed population growth to continue unimpeded and relatively smoothly, and the real potential nightmare is of a rapidly aging population, combined with collapsing birthrates in both rich and poor states.

Many demographers and long-term planners say the challenge for the next century will be less dealing with growing numbers of people and more managing the much larger population of aged and perhaps dependent people while finding new strategies to deliver prosperity, jobs and essential services.

The trend has already contributed to the current global financial crisis by driving up health and social care bills and perhaps also undermining productivity.

I heard somewhere this week that reduced male fertility should give us a human free planet in 10,000 years or so, unless Pakistani nukes go free range earlier.
HungLikeJesus • Nov 5, 2011 9:25 am
I'm looking forward to that!

Here is the exact same error made by the overpopulation scientists: predict the future by assuming the present curve won't change.

40 years ago scientists determined population would increase out of control, and today some set has determined it will decrease out of control.

If this were true the last 1,000 years would consist of females basically farming fertile males for their sperm. Sex would be too inefficient. Scary.

Well, we were warned 40 years ago, weren't we?:D

Herman Cain says that there are thousands of women he didn't molest for every one he did. Given this number, and giving him the benefit of the doubt of 999,000 for "thousands", we've got over 7000 more women waiting to come out and accuse him.
BigV • Nov 9, 2011 11:24 pm
