Monster's cakes
late to the party.... here are some of the cakes I have made (in no particular order)
OK those were the ones that showed up when i searched for cake. here are the 06 ones:
hmm. will try to edit size of those in first post....
thanks. I always meant to do this but was nudged by lola because I'm giving frosting advice with no evident qualifications! Trying to find a picture of the Jello aquarium cake........
Man, is everyone going have their own cooking thread now???
eta: Do you have the Womans Day birthday cake book monster? I recognise a couple of your cakes from there.
So The Thomas and Barbie cakes were 01, I did a better Thomas cake in 02 but the only picture I have is poorly lit and grainy :( and no pictures of hebe and Thor's cakes. that must've been a between cameras/restorted to film year....
03 was the aircraft carrier, and then Bob and the Snowflake cake:

You do? No, all of my cakes are from my crazy head :D
I got better with the fondant icing as I got better at ceramics. The two are very similar mediums to work with,

maybe they copied from me? I should sue.....
04 was Shark, Whodunnit and Batman....
oh and I made the plate the batman cake is on.... it looks much cooler in that pic than IRL
sorry, floodgates have opened......
05: Dinosaurs and Volcanos, Pirate Treasure Islands and Monster Truck
(sorry I guess this really should be in images or creative expression. If a mod wants to reclassify it as such, that's fine....thanks)
Yay! We made it to the aquarium cake! My proudest cake moment. I think....
blue jello with suspended fish on a yellow sponge base......
07 and 08: Pirate treasure island totally revisited, Knights, Train and Aquarium (Hebe stopped having themed cakes by this point....)
(someday I will scan the photos of the cakes I did for beest when we were at Uni...)
Verrrrrry Cool !!
The Aquarium Rocks !
09 and 10: Starwars: Dark and light side, Dogfight, Nerf Wars, Swamp.
Verrrrrry Cool !!
The Aquarium Rocks !
Thanks :) More of a wobble than a rock but...... :D
OK, I think I'm done. Hector had a "normal" cake this year, and Thor had an internally multicolored cake with chocolate buttercream and a few race cars plopped on top.
They are all really too "mature" for themed cakes any more. Which is OK, because they're all so busy I no longer have the time.....
Wow, monster!
Everyone of them is covered in Love!
You're an awesome mommy!
04 was Shark, Whodunnit and Batman....
This one is my favourite. I really love the plate too.
Max has been looking at the cakes saying, "that's yummy and yummy and yummy", except for the Shark cake. That one's yucky apparently. I guess that means it's definitely not a dolphin!
wow. I feel like such a slacker.
those are some awesome cakes, monster.
My kids were lucky to get a Betty Crocker with some pre=made frosting slapped on.
In my world, cakes come from bakeries.
As a kid they also came from the kitchen, but as a grownup, they come from shops. I feel no shame in my utter lack of cake making prowess.
That said: they're some fine looking cakes.
Thank you. I've been meaning to create this thread for years -wll at least since the aquarium cake (which I think I posted somewhere at the time)
wow. I feel like such a slacker.
LOL. That was my first thought too. Its a good thing I wasn't a Mom, I would have failed.
Monster, some of the icing looks 'moldable', like the stuff I've seen on the cake wars shows. How did you make it and how does it taste?
Bravo!
You should do these for other people for moneys!
Those are all amazing!
Did you also make the plate for the Batman cake? That's a cool looking plate.
Wow - those look great, and they're each unique which is a prize in itself.
I loved the shark one - I'll have it if Max doesn't want it Ali.
Of course my fave is the aquarium cake, but yes I had seen it before.
Which isn't to say I'm not impressed all over again.
I might feel a steal coming on - it's such a talking point of a dessert...
thanks, yes I did make the plate. pico it's "ready to roll" fondant icing. I imported it from the UK -you can buy it from craft stores here, but it's very, very expensive. I just paint the food color on white fondant mostly. Although sometimes -like the black batman logo- I use pre-colored. Trying to mix color in to it yourself is a lot of effort and just not worth it, in my experience. I only do that for very small quantities. Takes like shit imo, but I do not like super sweet stuff. Some of the kids eat it, some of them don't. It just tastes like a wall of sugar, like very bland candy
I also have shitloads more ceramics I should share too, i'm just terrible at downloading and sorting images from the camera -and i haven't even taken pictures of my last few big pieces yet.
All these cakes are british-style sponge cakes, by the way -mostly chocolate.
Weigh the eggs. Take the same weight of sugar and butter, beat together. Whisk in the eggs. Fold in the same weight of self raising flour, gently stir in melted chocolate or vanilla essence or other flavor. Bake at 375 for about 45 minutes. Bigger cakes need longer and lower temps.
Usual filling is butter cream -3oz each of butter and decorators sugar, add melted chocolate.
wow. Will you be my mom?
Those are so fucking amazing Monster. You have teh skilz.

pour the jelly a little at a time. set the first layer, then make slits in it for the fish/whatever, insert then so the hold, then pour the next layer, wait for it to set, repeat.
My bug filled halloween jelly wasn't so successful because it had to stand around too long, but I'm going to try again this year.
I really want to make a swimming one, but i can't find little swimmers to put in it.
Hmm. There was a dinosaur cake with fresh coconut shards as teeth. I wonder if that was in the year of the bad pictures? That had the werdest color/sheen to it as i topped it with chocolate butter cream with green food color in it and the choclate and color didn't mix brilliantly -it was very effective as dinosaur skin.
"...it pours the jelly a little at a time..."
Our differences aside, those cakes are nothing short of amazing.
I've never seen anything with that level of creativity.
I'm sure your kids will remember them forever.
this thread is making me hungry :p

Scroll down to the swimmers. That what you had in mind?
Super! :thumb2: Sorry for the late response. I've been super busy. Haven't even had time to bake those cookies so I could decorate them by Friday.
but i can't find little swimmers to put in it.
Little swimmers ?????
Oh TOOOOO easy !!!

You didn't mean ...

did you?
no. PZ, those are more kinda floaters, but if there were ones on swimming positions, that's exactly what I mean, thanks -closest yet. Unfortunately their shipping kinda puts it out of my price range, too....
and thanks to the person that PM'd me with a suggestion but I was unable to reply becuase they opted not to receive PMs. good suggestion, little too far out of the price range. And please post on the board more.
What about making your own with marzipan?
<hates marzipan ...but they need to be plastic -I want to suspend them in Jello -marzipan would deteriorate too much.
Here's some, but they might be too expensive, I don't know.
yep, railroad model figures. They come in all varieties of poses.
Yeah, for all those underwater railroads.
Those are awesome! Perfect! Yup, a tad expensive (I'm assuming you get all 6 pictured for the $12 -if not then yup way too damn expensive!) I'mm'a bear this in mind in case we have a really special event to celebrate.....
thanks
Funny, hector's into model trains, but this never occured to me.
Hebe's 14th birthday cake. Not terribly impressive compared to former years, but bare in mind it was three hours from conception to lighting the candles...
(cake is vanilla sponge with strawberry jam filling and chocolate with chocolate buttercream filling, clouds are whipped cream. We added a plane, a butterfly and an eagle to the clouds before lighting
Shoe Heaven....
(she gives Imelda Marcos a run for her money...)
.
Shoes don't go to heaven, silly, they don't have soles. Oh, wait...
