I failed as well, Dana. See you in Oz!
John Sellers • Oct 12, 2011 5:34 am
Even tho I'm American, I thought I 'd try it. Surprisingly, I got 9 of 'em right.
ZenGum • Oct 12, 2011 7:19 am
Thoughts as I take the test:
Question 5 is terribly written - they're all true.
13 is ambiguous abut "information" - identifiable or not?
20 appears ignorant of the Doomsday book!
23 shows a distinct lack of imagination.

I scored 15 out of 24. I'm not a pommie, then, but I'm the pommiest one here yet!
glatt • Oct 12, 2011 9:11 am
I got a 9 out of 24. I only knew one answer, so 8 out of 24 was just random chance.
Sundae • Oct 12, 2011 10:00 am
12 out of 24.
Never mind.
I see most of those questions as completely irrelevant.
They should have proper questions.

All your shopping has been swiped through.
What happens next:
- You start fumbling for your purse/ wallet as if surprised at having to pay
- You hand over cash/ card immediately, you had it ready in your hand
- You carry on packing your shopping, even though you know you will have to wait for your payment to be processed afterwards

You are at a bus stop. You have been waiting 30 minutes for a bus that should run every 12 minutes.
Do you:
- Complain to the person next to you that this route is dreadful
- Walk off and get a taxi
- Look to see who you can push past when the bus finally arrives

Who is Eamonn Holmes?
- A roly-poly presenter on daytime TV
- A smug git
- All of the above
classicman • Oct 12, 2011 11:39 am
I got six. You are all safe from me.

11 of 24 correct for this American. Not bad, I guess.

Six. Six well thought out guesses. Or random guesses.

Quando: bird poo?

I don't know. I think I got that one right.

Why are the results of the census kept hidden for 100 years, anyway? So Dan Brown has something to write about? Seems weird, that a census would be secret.

I was wondering what random chance would be, but didn't care enough to do the math. Those T/F questions are 50/50 but the other ones are 1 in 4.

1/3 or 8 out of 24. So, 11 out of 24 is a little better than chance, but still close.

Gambler's fallacy. One answer's accuracy has no bearing on another answer's accuracy. ;)
BigV • Oct 12, 2011 4:15 pm
You're right, of course. That's why I calculated the likelihood of each question being answered correctly with a random choice independently.
infinite monkey • Oct 12, 2011 4:16 pm
So, why is the census a secret for 100 years? That's wacky!
Happy Monkey • Oct 12, 2011 4:29 pm

Responding to the census is a legal obligation. Can't very well legally require everyone to give up a bunch of details about who lives in their home, how old they are, what they do for a living, what their ethnicity is and a whole host of other personal details, and then put that info into the public domain.
monster • Oct 12, 2011 7:07 pm
16. what a ridiculous test, though. Half those questions have zero relevance
DanaC • Oct 12, 2011 7:11 pm
And half of them have more than one 'correct' answer.
Aliantha • Oct 12, 2011 7:13 pm
That's what I was thinking Dana.

There was a lot of speculation about the new Australian Cit Test too. I might see if I can find a practice one and post it. See how many of us can be aussies. lol
Aliantha • Oct 12, 2011 7:24 pm
http://www.australiancitizenshiptest.net/?p=sample_test

I got 17/20, so I can be an Australian. lol

Again, some of the questions I found to be a bit ambiguous, but I think the questions are bit more reasonable than I had expected. I think if I hadn't been born here I'd find it hard to answer a lot more of the questions though.

2/3 I got wrong were ones where I should have chosen C all of the above rather than selecting option A or B. I feel a bit better now. :)

8 out of 24. So, I equalled the score of random guessing by random guessing.

Although one of the things I am randomly guessing about is exactly how this test is reflective of knowledge of citizenship ...

Off to stand on my head to do the Aussie quiz.

14 out of 20 ... Failed. A C grade is passing here in the civilized world, you know.

I'm just going to have to have a coupla Big Barrels to console myself, and work up the courage to go blue with the ratbag who wrote it. Or something.

SamIam • Oct 13, 2011 12:49 pm
So, what's the actual difference in pay rates between men and women in the UK?
DanaC • Oct 13, 2011 1:05 pm
Well, it used to be 17.5% but I think that quiz puts it around 20% currently.
DanaC • Oct 13, 2011 1:06 pm
From the Guardian:

The data shows that the median annual salary for all full-time employees in 2010 was £25,900, which is up 0.3% on the year before. But men earn vastly more than women: £28,091, compared to £22,490 - a difference of 19.9%.

Even overtime has an effect - 24.1% of men working full-time take home overtime pay, compared to only 12% of women in the same position.

But even if you remove that impact, plus the effect of women earning maternity pay and the fact that more women work part-time than men, the difference is still striking: men earned 10.2% more in hourly full-time pay last year, £13.01 compared to £11.68.

The pay gap has narrowed considerably in the past decade, declining from 16.3% (excluding overtime) in 2000 to 10.2% last year

The ONS recommends looking at median salaries because they are not affected by the relatively few very high earners - unlike the 'average' or 'mean' salary, which would be changed by one or two people earning over £1m, for instance. If you do use the average figure, the pay gap rises to 15.5%.

And before we start wondering if we're really comparing like with like:

Using the ONS' job classification data, where each occupation is given a special 4-digit code number, the data shows there are around 170 jobs classified where men earn over 10% more than their female counterparts, and another 200 where men earn between 1 and 10% more than women. There are only three where the hourly pay is the same.

(Kinda BS, really, but uni students here come out with a smallish debt with very soft terms and rates. Less funny with the details.)

Merc, you'd hate it man. Taxed to fuck, and no guns!
Aliantha • Oct 14, 2011 7:33 pm
Yeah, we have tax, and IMO, we pay an awful lot. Also, we have guns. It's just that you can't carry a hand gun around.

Just as a side note, it's amazing how much my attitude to taxation has changed as my financial circumstances have changed.

Yeah me too, but these days I see how hard Dazza works and I think it's not fair.

Last week he had his usual fortnightly pay which is about $5k gross, and also a project which was worth about $5k gross, but he only got to bring home about half of that. Less than actually.

I'm talking about a man who works about 80 hours a week in a job that he loves in general, so he's lucky that way, but still, we're still only considered upper middle income earners here, yet we get not a cent in aid from the government at all. We get no medical assistance at all. We pay full price for everything. Dazza supports two kids who aren't his biologically because their father firstly wont pay and secondly lives in another country now, so there's no recourse. I do what I can with bits of odd jobs here and there and some part time work, but it doesn't make much difference.

Then there are people (many) who complain because they have been cut off from unemployment benefits or been ASKED by centrelink to get a job even, and they bitch about it. Meanwhile, we work our arses off to pay the bills so that we can give our kids the same things the multiple child single parent families living off welfare get!

It sux.
ZenGum • Oct 14, 2011 8:38 pm
We get no medical assistance at all.

Eh?

You're all entitled to medicare, and if you have private insurance, that is tax deductible.
Aliantha • Oct 14, 2011 8:40 pm
Yeah, but we don't qualify for bulk billing, and we pay full price for prescriptions etc. Also, I understand that if we have emergency surgery, we're expected to pay more than an unemployed person (although I'm not certain of that last bit).
Aliantha • Oct 14, 2011 8:42 pm
I don't have private health insurance because when I was in my mid to late 20's when the new legislations came in, I was a single parent working part time and going to uni full time. I couldn't afford private health insurance. By the time I could, I was over 30 so there was no point.

I believe the legislation has changed again now, so next year might be different as a family group, but right now, nope. No private health insurance.
