Webcams near you

Spexxvet • Sep 26, 2011 9:41 am
This is the closest to me, at least on this site.

http://www.trafficland.com/city/PHL/camera/9637/

Which one is closest to you?
jimhelm • Sep 26, 2011 9:46 am
Image

this is just across the street, pointed at the liquor store on the other side of the circle.
infinite monkey • Sep 26, 2011 9:54 am
I guess the webcam in my bedroom wouldn't be considered a traffic cam? Oh, yeah, there would have to be traffic, right? Noooooooooo traffic there. None. Nada.

Closest to work:
glatt • Sep 26, 2011 9:58 am
Here's one 3 blocks from me. It's not the closest, but I could go out there and wave to you. Or hold up signs.

but it's a good 15 miles away
Perry Winkle • Sep 26, 2011 10:16 am
Right outside of my office.

It looks out over the valley at the "Sleeping Giant."

I think you should do that on your lunch.

I'm thinking: Iron my shirt Bitch! might get you some weird looks

How about GOD HATES TRAFFIC CAMS!!
grynch • Sep 26, 2011 10:32 am

WHALE PENIS

I"M NOT SORRY ABOUT UR FINGER
monster • Sep 26, 2011 11:13 am
So, Glatt, midday Eastern with a sign that says "Whale Penis". I'll be watching.....
infinite monkey • Sep 26, 2011 11:19 am
How about:

My traffic cam was killed on 9/11, you insensitive bastards!

Our traffic cam brings all the boys to the yard.

85% of webcams are the fault of top management.

Webcams are God Damn Fools!
glatt • Sep 26, 2011 11:20 am
I'll swing by that camera. I'm wearing a striped polo shirt. You won't be able to miss me. But if I hold a sign, it will be rather small. All I have are these little yellow post-its.

I'll be there at 12:15 Eastern. That's one hour from now.

Somebody take a screenshot.
infinite monkey • Sep 26, 2011 11:23 am
Synchronize your watches.
glatt • Sep 26, 2011 11:29 am
I just went back to the webcam to see exactly where it is, and they changed where it was pointing. I won't get such a close-up.
infinite monkey • Sep 26, 2011 11:32 am
omg...QUICK. Look for three squiggly lines on your phone! They're on to you!

I mean, you mention it, and they move it? That is NOT a coincidence! They're watching you, watching everyone, to prevent tomfoolery and shenanigans.
glatt • Sep 26, 2011 11:42 am
Yeah, well at least I know where it is now. Before I was going to have to be walking around to all 12 corners at that intersection looking for the 4 manhole covers on the sidewalk. But now I know exactly where it is.

I'm seriously going to be there at 12:15, which is in just about half an hour.
http://www.trafficland.com/city/WAS/camera/200162/index.html

Can you take a screen shot?

edit:
People are going to have to walk around me. It's starting to get busy out there with the lunch hour foot traffic.
infinite monkey • Sep 26, 2011 11:42 am
I'll try but don't count on me. I'm not to be counted on.

NEED BACKUP!

I've got it set up. I'm going early to the cafe for lunch so I can be back here.

:)
SamIam • Sep 26, 2011 11:53 am
Although we have one here in town about 3 miles from me, its not working. The closest working one is about 100 miles away in Telluride. I should be driving through there in a day or two.

I will try, too. But I'm cyber challenged. Will do my best, tho.
jimhelm • Sep 26, 2011 12:13 pm

infinite monkey • Sep 26, 2011 12:16 pm

jimhelm • Sep 26, 2011 12:17 pm
see you there i think?

step right a bit
infinite monkey • Sep 26, 2011 12:19 pm
Crud, missed the wave.
glatt • Sep 26, 2011 12:20 pm
Yeah, I was trying to check in, but was having trouble with the phone. Anyway, I felt a little silly standing there. I waved a few times...
infinite monkey • Sep 26, 2011 12:20 pm
Tomorrow I'll return the favor. At about 7:45 a.m. watch for a stopped yellow Beetle along I-75, I'll be standing on the retaining wall, waving.

Not really.

That was great, glatt! Thanks! I giggled my face off!
jimhelm • Sep 26, 2011 12:26 pm
did you see robo cop sneak by? that was cool!
SamIam • Sep 26, 2011 12:46 pm
Drat! I got to dinking around on something else and forgot the time, but nice work Jim and IM!
infinite monkey • Sep 26, 2011 12:48 pm
I didn't catch Robo-cop!

That picture is headed for the Time-Life Timeless Photographs Collector's Edition!

Are you tryin' to tell me glatt is a wampire?

SHOPPED. ALL THOSE PICTURES ARE SHOPPED! That isn't even glatt. It's just some random guy.

footfootfoot • Sep 26, 2011 1:00 pm
just some random guy should be Glatt's user title.

The nearest webcams to me are an hour away.
glatt • Sep 26, 2011 1:01 pm
And I'm back.

Thanks for grabbing those screen shots!

It's even weirder than you can imagine, just standing there on the sidewalk as people are walking by. If you look up at the camera, they make eye contact with you because they think you are looking at them and are about to ask them for money, but you are dressed nice, so what's your game, mister?. So I fidgeted with my phone a bit, trying to check in that way, but it wasn't cooperating.

Anyway it was fun. There is an auction house just a couple blocks from there and Mondays are exhibition day before the Tuesday auction, so it's always fun to see what stuff they are selling. There were a couple of old wax cylinder phonograph players and a box of recordings mixed in with all the other stuff this week. Neat.

In HS the big trick was to stand around in a group looking up, and watch everyone else looking up trying to see what we're seeing.

This webcam adventure was so fun. I haven't laughed that much in a while. Thanks!
BigV • Sep 26, 2011 1:33 pm
that was A TRICK????

goddammit.
monster • Sep 26, 2011 2:29 pm
I missed it goddamn it! Do it again!
monster • Sep 26, 2011 2:54 pm
This one http://a2cam.com/ is on my non-freeway route to the boys' school. maybe hebe and I will visit and wave while we're pootling about on Weds -she has a day off.
glatt • Sep 26, 2011 3:01 pm
That looks like it's mounted in somebody's bedroom window.
monster • Sep 26, 2011 3:08 pm
it is. they're pissed about cars hitting the sign on the island on the pedestrin crossing. We have newish crossing laws here in hippyville and people are getting their birkenstocks in a twist...
monster • Sep 26, 2011 3:09 pm
if you see a red windstar with chrome flames on the front wing, wave!
infinite monkey • Sep 26, 2011 3:28 pm
Why are so many people hitting that sign?

Geometry, people, you don't even have to understand it to use it. Let me help: the shortest distance between two points is a straight line. However, if all you have is a corner, you're just going to have to go a longer distance.
monster • Sep 26, 2011 3:29 pm
might go by there in about half an hour.....
glatt • Sep 26, 2011 3:32 pm
It only updates every 30 seconds, so you need to sit there for a while.
infinite monkey • Sep 26, 2011 3:33 pm
Oooh ooooh...go by really slow, picking your nose! And hit the sign while you're doing it. DO IT! DO ITTTTTT!
TheMercenary • Sep 26, 2011 3:40 pm
On my laptop but you can't see it.
Lamplighter • Sep 26, 2011 3:42 pm
This cam will be very, very busy in a just a few days.

The Fall season Coho salmon run is beginning and some very big fish
will be coming by... here's an old video of Chinook salmon.
IIRC, the long vertical lines on the glass are 24 inches apart

This is from yesterday and shows how crazy river banks get at this time of year.
.
monster • Sep 26, 2011 3:44 pm
I know. So I'm thinking -if I can persuade Hector and it's not tipping it down, he and I will be using that crossing around 4:10. Anyone avaialable for screendump duty? We'll count how many cars don't stop for us.

ttfn
infinite monkey • Sep 26, 2011 3:51 pm
I'll look for you. Again, I can't be counted on, but I'll try. :)
glatt • Sep 26, 2011 4:04 pm
Will you be in your car? What kind? I'll look for you.
infinite monkey • Sep 26, 2011 4:05 pm
Red Windstar.
infinite monkey • Sep 26, 2011 4:16 pm
This one?
glatt • Sep 26, 2011 4:19 pm
That was the only red van that went by. And the window is rolled down, so maybe she was hanging out of it and the camera missed her.
infinite monkey • Sep 26, 2011 4:20 pm
I thought that too. At first I saw this van, but it's more maroonish:
glatt • Sep 26, 2011 4:23 pm
You see that huge pack of people going by? Poor white car had to wait almost a minute for all those pedestrians.
infinite monkey • Sep 26, 2011 4:26 pm
It was some sort of street gang. Note the yellow gang clothing.

The Ann Arbor 'burbs are notorious for street gangs, yo.

edit: Hey, you can't even see the sign in this picture. It can't be totally obscured by that car. No wonder people hit it when it disappears and reappears like some Cheshire Stop Sign.

yup. that was after we crossed with a sign that said "hi cellar" and then stood on the sidewalk for a minute.
monster • Sep 26, 2011 4:51 pm
We parked off to the right of the camera, walked back, crossed, waved and held up a sign, crossed again, went back to the car and that was us headed home.....

Clodfobble • Sep 26, 2011 10:51 pm
Alas, I couldn't find any easy-access street views in that list. They're all shots of the top of the Capitol building, or the UT tower, or over Lake Travis... and I have neither a boat, nor government security clearance. (Actually, the UT Tower did finally reopen awhile back, only about 30 years after the Charles Whitman massacre, but it's still on very tightly scheduled tours, and the observation deck is way too small to see in those shots.)
monster • Sep 26, 2011 11:46 pm
you need more local liberal vigilantes....

you could set one up....
glatt • Sep 27, 2011 8:22 am
Ok Monster, I grabbed these shots before the red van went by. Is one of them you?
glatt • Sep 27, 2011 8:23 am
and then two more, just before the red van.
monster • Sep 27, 2011 8:34 am
No, we were before then. We stood on the far sidewalk intersetion, near that lamppost with a poster on it. The crossing we went back and forth over was the stripey one.
monster • Sep 27, 2011 8:35 am
But the red van was definitely me. I can see my stickers on the windows, and yes, i had the window down :)
glatt • Sep 27, 2011 8:52 am
Oh, well I only got two other pictures from earlier.
monster • Sep 27, 2011 10:10 am
Yes! that's us in the second one. I'm near the lamppost holding a piece of paper, and hector is the smaller one on in the middle. The third person is giving us a WTF look :D
glatt • Sep 27, 2011 10:18 am

The National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, KY.

The have 18 cameras, 2 you can pan, tilt, & zoom, and 16 that refresh about every second. The PTZ cams are outside, and are of pretty decent quality.

You should check 'em out, see some Vettes, zoom in and see who's at Wendy's a quarter mile away...

I reckon the "wall" in sky's pic is a line of rocks exposed at low tide. go look at a max zoom satellite picture of Agate Beach Oregon. I took my picture in July 2011 on a surfin safari.
