This last Saturday a tuna fishing boat snared a great white shark off the Massachusetts coast. The shark was tagged with a simple identification tag and put back into the water. It is the first confirmed sighting for this area this summer.
Massachusetts state Secretary of Environmental Affairs Ian Bowles said, ”For commonsense swimmers, they don’t pose a threat.” Bowles explained that common sense means not swimming in the middle of a seal pod – seals, gray seals in particular, are a delicacy as far as great whites are concerned.

this may be a dumb question but ... which "dark spots" are the eyes? The spots where the white meets the grey, or the two more slit-like things on either side of those spots? I look at this and think the slit-like things are the eyes (more diabolical), but I think it's their nostrils.
I always do this with killer whales too ... I look at them and think the white spots are the eyes, when they're really not (makes them more friendly looking I think).
the slits are where their spherical eyes are.
you're just seeing them from the "side" of the shark's skull where the eyes don't show much. In fact the shark can't see the photographer at all in this shot, because, naturally, you can't actually see the eyes.
The dark spots on the gray/white border are nostrils.
Why does a shark need nostrils? Mouth, gills? Sure.

I knew they could "smell" blood, but had no idea how that works. I guess I'm not down with my fish anatomy. So do they have sinuses and stuff?
