12/16/2002: Paki passenger train

Image

I always love these shots of tremendous numbers of people getting from point A to point B. IIRC, the IotD has had this sort of shot of cars, trucks, bikes. This is the first IotD shot of a train overloaded with humanity. These folks are Pakistani, returning home from an Islamic conference in Bangladesh. They had a long way to go like that! I guess mass transit works if we are all willing to do our part.

wow. that is the only statement that I can make about that image.
on another note: has anyone heard if train service is restored between India and Pakistan?
Leus • Dec 16, 2002 2:25 pm
That's a lot of people. Impressive. Some of them seems precariously gripped. A train, lot's of people, a bridge. That's my kind of combination :D
xoxoxoBruce • Dec 16, 2002 3:37 pm
Oh, they'll never return.
No, they'll never return.
And their fate is still unlearned.
Pooooooor old Paki's....

How the hell does the engineer know when to stop?
Cam • Dec 16, 2002 4:43 pm
I think this is a great example of the failings of the phrase "safety in numbers"
Torrere • Dec 16, 2002 7:33 pm
Probably only when people start banging on the windshield and shouting at him.

When my login stops working. Or when I stop receiving checks.

Unfortunately there's no such thing as a quick stop (unless it hits something) for a train ... imagine the fun of an experiment in inertia as the train comes to a sudden halt and all those guys clinging to the outside continue to hurtle forward at the former speed of the train.

Yes, I am a sick puppy, but well aware of it. (See "Dude on Fire" if you have any questions in this regard)

(Pakistani train word problems)

If a Paki train is travelling at 60 miles per hour due west at 2 pm, with 250 people clinging to the outter chassis, and there is a camel walking due east at 6 miles per hour Paralell to the train track at 2:15, how many of the chassis riders wear American T-shirts and drink Coke?

At what point does the track contract under the shadow of the camel to allow a McGoat meal to be digested by the lefthanded riders?
Torrere • Dec 16, 2002 9:58 pm
There is not enough information to solve either problem.

255, the other five had to go piss off the side of the train from drinking too much Coke.

Cam. Did you look in the back of the textbook for the answers?

:violin: I always wanted to use that , so here you go.

Cam got it right (but he had to look it up in the answer key).
Cam • Dec 16, 2002 10:06 pm
Me no, that would be cheating, and against my standards. It's a simple matter of solving for the mass of the camels hump after 2 hours of walking. You plug that into (250X-3.443)/33 = Y and walla you have the answer to the first question. And the second question is just common sense. :D

shouldn't that be viola? :violin:

(I always wanted to use that one too).
Cam • Dec 16, 2002 10:42 pm
viola, walla, they are the same, at least when speaking. Now that I reread my post it seems to be lacking, :(
Torrere • Dec 16, 2002 11:06 pm
I insist that Cam has it wrong! There is _no_ way that there are 255 chassis riders wearing T-shirts if there are only 250 chassis riders. Saying that they stopped off is invalid because the train is travelling at 60 miles per hour. The number of chassis riders wearing T-Shirts MUST be less than or equal to 250. And don't say they went inside, either, because there would only be 250 Pakistanis out there if the inside was utterly packed, standing room only.

(voila = there is)
(voici = here is)
helen • Dec 16, 2002 11:37 pm
and to think, sitting at the back of the bus caused so many problems for the U.S.
Cam • Dec 17, 2002 2:08 am
No Torrere they came from inside. They may go back inside but when they pass the camel they will have to go outside to take a leak, due the oke they drank.

Um, no they aren't. Perhaps you are thinking of "voila". :-)
Cam • Dec 17, 2002 1:35 pm
Yes that's the word, when I'm just writing stuff with no serious intent I just type things how they sound in my head. And well as you can see sometimes it just doesn't work. :)

So quit picking on me :)

See I fixed it. lol
coliano • Dec 17, 2002 9:46 pm
that's a great pic.

people must fall off all the time. What happens when your hands get tired from clinging to a hot sooty locomotive for hours at a stretch? or when the ol' bladder says it's time to make water...

The hard part, I suppose, would be remembering to piss away from the direction of travel.
Torrere • Dec 19, 2002 2:30 am
Not really. It would be going to same speed, relative to you, whether going in front of you or behind you. So it would just fall to the ground. It wouldn't be a problem unless the train was accelerating or decelerating. (Hm.. Would air resistance be able to slow the liquid that quickly? I don't believe so.)

To bad for the people below you, though!
Leus • Dec 19, 2002 9:46 am
Hm... if you piss in direction of the travel, it does get back to you.

(don't ask)

Some advice from Jim Croce, I believe:

Don't tug on Superman's cape
---Don't PISS INTO THE WIND---
Don't pull the mask of the old lone ranger
And don't ever mess with Jim

(unless you're Slim)

Abdulah Pashwari looks on in pride and thinks:... ' How fortunate that uncle Bwani had so much fly paper left over from the great swarming' ..

I bet this train hits deer, too. 1/15/2003: Dead deer mystery, but they never make it to the power lines...

Mmmm... spicy venison and saffron rice ... :3eye:
