Vancouver Riots

They're reporting on the radio that several people were prepared with gas masks..... so some clearly came intending to riot. Reminds me so much of the bad old days in English Football/Soccer. :(

Stupid Canadians.

Everybody knows that you're only supposed to riot and burn down parts of your city when your team wins.
GunMaster357 • Jun 16, 2011 8:05 am
Same here in France when we have a soccer game between Paris and Marseille.

A French singer called those supporters as being fed on hatred and beer.

I guess it's the same everywhere in the world whatever the game.

Maybe they like to burn the candle at both ends, so to speak?

I wonder how much financial and economic stress plays a part in people's desire to riot? Is rioting less likely to happen when the economy is good? People have more to lose? Is a hockey loss just an excuse for showing general disgruntlement?
wolf • Jun 16, 2011 8:16 am
I think that people are becoming more and more lawless as a whole. The respect for other's property that I grew up with just isn't there anymore.

Then there's my whole density theory.

Much like Malthus' rats, there is a maximum allowable population density for humans. Once that level is exceeded, people start eating each other, just like the rats, only without the cannibalism (most of the time). That's why crime, especially violent crime is higher in the city than the Suburbs.

I'm not a real doctor, but I do have a master's degree.

Wait - I thought only Philadelphia fans did bad things.:right:
monster • Jun 16, 2011 8:58 am
But British Football/Soccer has managed to turn it around, I think?

They are reporting, that some people had mollitove (SP) cocktails in the fenced area. The only way that could have happened was to take them with you, BEFORE the game. It sickens me to think that there were people out there ready to do damage win or lose. Add mob mentallity and stir in a few idiots, and see what we get. The downtown liquor stores were closed 1.5 HOURS BEFORE the game even started. There were cops out at 2pm, as the crowds started to appear. The media is blaming the police, because they did not do enough. Excuse me? Lets see... 100 000 people, lets say 5- 8 000 idiots and rioters... and 200-400 police. Had they pushed any harder, we would have had more people hurt, including police and fire personal. As it was, the fire department had to back off, because they were getting hit with rocks, bottles and anything else the idiots could throw at them, while they were putting out the first fire. Its a shame but the idiots still were able to cause this much damage and destruction.
I am a Canucks fan, I was dissapointed in them losing. I, along with thousands others said "$#%@!$#%%" and pouted. The better team won, its a game... this will not in any way affect my day to day life. To riot over it.... wow.

Philly fans do bad things to fans of other teams.

And Santa Claus.

The loss was just an excuse to riot. Then it turned into a party for the rioters and they had fun tearing up the city and looting.

You can see them having fun in all the facebook pictures. Posing in front of burning cop cars with big smiles.

Lots of photographic evidence if the cops have an interest.

Yeah, a few years back there was a riot at my university and a bunch of people got expelled because they took pictures of themselves trying to flip cars that stuff. Idiots.

But if you are going to riot, at least wear a hood or put a bandanna over your face or something...

Its hockey. If the players could burn down the ice, they would. Fights and violence increase ratings. It's encouraged.
wolf • Jun 16, 2011 10:10 pm
Hockey today is a high school girl's sport compared to the days of the Broad Street Bullies.

On the other hand, Canada has many offspring of American draft dodgers.;)
glatt • Jun 17, 2011 9:33 am
Yeah, of the thousands of pictures out there, the one of the guy torching a cop car is probably the first one the cops will pursue. His future isn't looking so bright.

You are far better qualified than me, but I've been hearing that everything is going to hell in a handbasket for far too long to believe it.

Some people are prone to rioting. It's just human nature.
Many of those people live in Greece or France, it's true. But there are plenty scattered about who will use sport as an excuse as opposed to politics.

Rioters al around the world destroy things that they have paid for, have need of, will probably end up missing - or at least their fellow citizens will. There's no logic in it and no real reason to look for any.

Just sweep away the broken glass, shrug and hope that any fines imposed at least cover the cost of the trial. Oh and if you know the identity of any rioter, go and smash their windows and set fire to their car...

I'm wondering who contributed the shirt that asshole is stuffing down the gas tank. The perp looks fully clothed - did he rip it off someone else's back or was it donated? :eyebrow:
glatt • Jun 17, 2011 12:14 pm
Well, there was a lot of looting going on. I saw several pictures of looters stealing suits from a formal wear shop. It could have come off a mannequin.

An Australian man has been identified as part of the couple snapped kissing during a riot following Vancouver's hockey championship loss on Wednesday.

The striking image taken by Getty photographer Rich Lam has been splashed around the world over the past two days but until Friday, the identity of the couple was unknown.

Lying in the middle of a city street in Vancouver amid the fracas, fires and looting was Canadian Alex Thomas and her Australian boyfriend Scott Jones, seen cradling her in his arms and brushing his lips against hers.

Scott's father Brett Jones told public broadcaster CBC he recognised his son in the picture circulated around the world over the internet and in newspapers.

In an interview from his home in Perth, he said Scott, an aspiring stand-up comedian, was attempting to console Alex after she had been knocked down by police.

They were caught in the violence after leaving the hockey arena where the NHL's Boston Bruins beat the Vancouver Canucks 4-0 to win the Stanley Cup.

"They were between the riot police and the rioters, and the riot police were actually charging forward, and Alex got knocked by a [police] shield and fell to the ground," Mr Jones said.

"[Scott] was comforting her and gave her a kiss to say, 'It's going to be OK,' and the photographer just took the shot at that moment.

"They are both just totally stunned [that the photograph] has just completely gone viral around the world."

Consoling. What a gentleman. :D
casimendocina • Jun 19, 2011 1:14 am
From the knowledge I have gained watching programs like CSI/The Bill etc..., I would say that he'd been down at ground level a little longer than what is required for just a consoling kiss.
footfootfoot • Jun 19, 2011 1:51 am
Some people need a lot of consoling...
casimendocina • Jun 19, 2011 8:19 am
involving intersecting of legs, no less.
footfootfoot • Jun 19, 2011 12:23 pm
I find that comforting.

It took me forever to come up with a good line, and it ended up being so simple.

That's a great line.

I've been in a sort of tiredness induced stupor for several days and this woke me up. Thanks.

A nurse's response to the asshat's apology letter.

~snip~Why am I blaming you for all this? Because you are the instigator. You ask people to leave your family, friends and co-workers alone?! I think they need to know how much of a colossal douche you are. Remember that your parents worked themselves to the bone so they can move to this country and give you your god-given right to flip cars over and set them on fire.

You, Tim Kwong, are a douchtard. Apology not accepted.
