Rep. Weiner uncertain whether lewd photo was of him
(Reuters) - New York Congressman Anthony Weiner said on Wednesday that he did not send a lewd photo over his Twitter account but cannot be sure that the photo was not of him.
"It certainly doesn't look familiar to me, but I don't want to say with certitude to you something that I don't know to be the certain truth," Weiner told CNN in an interview.
"I didn't send any twitter picture," he said, adding that the photo might have been manipulated.
Weiner has said his account was hacked when a lewd photo of a man in bulging boxer briefs was tweeted to a 21-year-old female college student in Washington state over the weekend.
"This seems like it was a prank to make fun of my name," Weiner said. "When you are named Weiner, that happens a lot."
Weiner's office told Reuters on Tuesday that the New York congressman, who has a high profile as an advocate of liberal causes, had hired an attorney to advise him on whether or not he could press criminal charges as a result of the alleged hack of his Twitter account.
"This is not a national security matter," Weiner said. "We're not making a federal case out of this....I'm not sure it rises -- no pun intended -- to that level," he said.
Weiner said that the law firm he hired has an Internet security firm that is investigating how his account was hacked.
He declined to say whether there actually was a photo of him in his undies like the one sent to the student.
"This is part of the problem with the way this has progressed, and one of the reasons I was perhaps, forgive me, a little stiff yesterday," Weiner told reporters on Capitol Hill.
The student, Gennette Cordova, issued a statement to the New York Daily News that denied she personally knew Weiner but said, "I am a fan."
Weiner had tens of thousands of followers on twitter before the weekend's incident. In contrast, Weiner was following 198 people.

Huh. It's a picture of a fully clothed weiner.
yawn.
In other news, Chinese-American politician Dong Wang* has withdrawn from the presidential nomination race. No reason was cited.
* I know a person with this name. Really.
Strangely enough he was making jokes about it in interviews while it was being reported that at the same time he is outraged ad seeking legal counsel on whether to sue or whatever.
I find it weird that he didn't immediately deny that it was his "package." Unless he is really that unfamiliar with his own body or he actually does take pictures of it. Either option seems a little "odd."
So, what's next (drum roll):
Boehner's Boner?
(For those who don't know it's pronounced Bay-ner. But still.)
No link I've followed has shown me any cock :(
I mean I'm not desperate for it.
It's just when it's a SCANDAL you think you'd get at least a bit of turgidity.

(Reuters) -
I love it!
Not even Reuters has the balls to mention his party affiliation. Imagine that!
Who is the ugly chick whose picture heads the tweet?
Speaking of tweeters ... isn't that a euphemism that's fallen out of use?
I think Viagra ought to pick up the pic and use it in a commercial, I mean since he can't say it is his cock he couldn't claim copyrights.... :)
"If I'm a lawyer, and I'm representing a politician, in general, it's not against the law to lie to the media. It's not against the law to lie to your constituents. It is against the law to lie to law enforcement authorities," he said. "Martha Stewart went to jail not for insider trading, but for lying. Barry Bonds gets charged, goes to trial, not for using steroids - for lying about it. So if I'm a lawyer looking at a case such as this, I'm going to be real careful before I let my clients talk to law enforcement authorities, because I don't want to find my client, you know, jammed up here criminally because, despite what happened here, they're not telling the truth."
Ford said the content of the tweet also has to be considered.
"There are laws against sending out pornography on your account," he explained. "People will look at this and say, 'This might be really distasteful, but it's not pornographic.' You know, the young lady, if she felt she was being harassed in some fashion. But she hasn't expressed that. And you might say one instance of something like this wouldn't rise to that level, either. I don't think you're really talking about possible criminal activity there."
However, this situation may escalate to an investigation by an ethics committee, Ford said.

hmm...
"So assuming that it was a picture of you, because I think that that's the conclusion that a lot of people are going to draw? Do you think that someone knew that you had a photo like that in your account and then knew enough of your account information to be able to hack into it and send it?"
Weiner said, "Look this is exactly the problem that we have with this issue. And I just want you to respect the idea that at some point the questions can get more, and more and more invasive and bizarre."
Why couldn't he just answer the question? This is starting to get interesting.
Why do so many of these reports never mention his party affiliation?
Why do so many of these reports never mention his party affiliation?
Probably because a mention of Weiner's party affiliation would naturally segue into a discussion about the political leanings of right wing blogger Andrew Breitbart who broke the story. God forbid that Faux and Co. might have to report on the misdeeds of a member of the conservative hyena pack. :eyebrow:

True dat.
If that is true I would give huge props to Breitbart for exposing his waffling. So far I have nothing short of "It could be my dick, but maybe not". That should go over well in the next election.
If it wasn't you, would you not be jumping up and down saying so in an effort to preserve your career? I would.

Thank god. A talking weiner would really freak me out.
It looks good to me.
He should be proud of it!
Ah - maybe that's the real problem.
It isn't him, but he doesn't want to say so, because sadly he is cursed with that name, and a really tiny pecker. I mean something like a baby's pinkie.
But if says it is him, aside from the whole "lewd" photo business, he is worried that one of the women into whom he's dipped his tiny rod will go to the press and reveal his shameful secret to the world.
Or something like that.
Now he says its his wiener and he has sent photos to 6 others. But really who would want to see this guy's wiener? Am I missing something here?

I liked him as a speaker on a lot of TV news programs. But anyone stupid enough, in this day and age, to take pics like that AND e-mail them to ANYONE is too stupid to serve in any elected office.

I agree and what is sad is he is not the only one that has done this lately. We are really screwed
Late Monday afternoon, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) called for a congressional ethics investigation of Mr. Weiner. Ms. Pelosi said in a statement she was "deeply disappointed and saddened about this situation."
Fighting back tears at a New York news conference, the Democratic congressman said he lied last week when he repeatedly claimed not to have sent a photo of a man's crotch in bulging underwear to a female college student in Seattle.
"I have not been honest with myself, my family, my constituents, my friends, my supporters, and the media,'' said Mr. Weiner.
He said he has engaged in illicit conversations with about six women in recent years online. He said he never met any of the women.
"I haven't told the truth,'' he said. "I apologize to my wife and our families… I am deeply ashamed.''
Nother lying politician. Frickin' frack! I really liked him too. WTF was he thinking?
"Of course there are no plans to resign... " That shouldn't even be an option.
God forbid that Faux and Co. might have to report on the misdeeds of a member of the conservative hyena pack. :eyebrow:
Eh hem... There's still some crow left on your plate.
If the basis of his denying any laws were broken is that he didn't use government equipment when texting his pics, he is wrong.
As an elected government official, his weiner IS government "equipment". ;)
I hope a lot of you all never feel you should run for public office. 'Cause, your pictures are EVERYWHERE! ;)
I am safe from that they only elect strippers in Italy ;-)
I give this as much weight as Arnold cheating on his wife.
Who gives a shit?
If I was the wife, I'd be pissed. If he was running for reelection, and I could vote in that election, I'd consider it along with everything else, and it would count against him. But I really don't care. If I were a woman who received one of these pictures, and I didn't want to receive it, then I'd also be pissed.
But I'm not any of those things, so I don't care.
I don't care if a politician lies to me about their personal life. It's none of my damn business. John Edwards had a love child? I don't care. He illegally used campaign contributions to pay the woman off, or something like that? Then I care.
If they lie about something related to their job, then it matters.
Apples and oranges. A wife maybe be able to forgive an underwear photo on the internet that's nothing, but a child with someone else? That's harsh! That is a man on a power trip and I don't care to have that kind of a person in office. >[ see megalomania]
Isn't it Weiner's weiner?

They're ALL megalomaniacs. If they weren't they wouldn't put themselves in the spotlight. I agree with Glatt. Lying about an affair probably doesn't impact your ability to serve the people. Lying about your knowledge of a break-in at your opponents headquarters or your knowledge of exchanging arms for hostages probably does.
I don't agree they are all megalomaniacs.

Then I look around and think...
Yeah. Right.:right:

I'd prefer my leaders to act with some dignity, but have they ever? The job draws people with huge egos. And voters love them that way.

....
to lead you must first get elected. to get elected you have to get the votes. to get the votes you have to get the attention of the voters. to get the attention of the voters you have to get the attention of the media. to get the attention of the media you have to be more dramatic/outlandish/daring/compelling/unusual than the others --OR-- have enough money to buy your own airtime. Both of these last two are very strong indicators of huge egos.
But.
Despite my airtight analysis above, there are leaders who are not media grabbing showboating attention whores. But they don't make the front page or the crawl to keep you tuned in through the commercials. And they get stuff done too. That we're still a viable society (don't believe the doomsayers, they're wrong again) is a sign of our functioning government. It's not all over. And we do still have people working for the greater good, a good greater than their own individual self.

They are trusted representatives of the people. They stood in front of the people who elected them and lied to them, completely, utterly, and knowingly. That should stand for something. If they are going to lie to everyone in public about something hard and controversial, they will lie about other hard and controversial issues that deal with public trust. At least Arnold stood up and told everyone the truth before he fell on his sword of lies like The Weiner did...

Covering up an affair for like ten years is telling the truth?
Yes. They shouldn't lie. I agree. I'm not saying what they have done is OK. I'm saying I don't care. It isn't important enough to worry about. No crime, no foul. No professional ethical breach, no foul. No screwing over the constituents, no foul. No abuse of power, no foul.
Wiener betrayed his wife. I don't respect him for that. But it's none of my business.
Lance Armstrong cheated on his wife, but I don't see anyone asking him to return his medals for that. Tiger Woods too.
I just read a transcript of Weiner's dirty sext-ing (to a Lisa Weiss in Vegas; a blackjack dealer, of course) and I'm underwhelmed.
This is what passes for sexy talk?
Yawn.
My cock, your tight pussy, I'm hard, I'm horny, wanna fuck you....blah blah blah. I had better material in high school ffs.

My sentiments as well.
These kind of affairs are of no particular interest to me, whether its Weiner, Christopher Lee, who resigned last year after his pic on craigs list, Mark Sourder, who had an affair with a staffer with whom he made an abstinence video, or Senator David Vitter, who was involved in a DC escort service scandal. If their constituents want to re-elect them, as in the case of Vitter, it is their choice.
Cases like John Edwards and former Nevada Senator John Ensign, who paid hush money and got a lobbying job for the husband of the staffer he messed around with, are different. These involve criminal violations of campaign finance laws.
In the end, I recall a famous quote from Huey Long -- "the only way I can be brought down is to be caught in bed with a dead girl or a live boy."

Yea, I generally agree. In fact I would go so far as to say that he should not step down. Wait for the next election and let the chips fall. He did lie directly to his peeps over the event, I would see that as a breech of trust, but I don't have to vote for him.
As for Arnold, yea he kept is a secret. Not giving him a pass, only that when the time came to own up he did so, certainly because it was going to make the press one way or another. Not different circumstances, just a different form, an IMHO, a more honest and direct way to damage control.
I come to this ignorant of the politics, but I certainly believe what Arnie did was more reprehensible. To father a child and hide it is of greater magnitude than just taking a picture of your clothed cock.
And the only reason either matters is the possibility of blackmail, which does make it of interest to the electorate. That both were forced into revealing their secrets means both gave opportunities to others to coerce them.
Tiger Woods, Ryan Giggs? Not bothered. They both traded on "family guy" images, but as someone not interested in what they had to sell I am not personally affected.
The hypocrisy of politicians affects me much more. If they have affairs while promoting family values, vote against gay issues while banging rent boys, go to war on "benefit cheats" while claimed £11k "by mistake" etc.
So my bottom line is what each of them said politically whilst fucking around.
Or just taking reasonably innocent photos.
I don't know and I'm not all that bothered to know in detail. But Arnie strikes me as the kind of guy who is pretty much into the nuclear family and status quo.
And therefore a coward - for all his muscles - for not changing his mind once his own cock showed him the other side of the situation.
Arnold had an affair and hid it for a decade all the while paying her off.
The two are not even close.

No, but he cheated on his sport too and should have to return his medals for doping. That man's a well-rounded cheater.
Hey.
What is the crime here. Literally. What crime has been committed? None that I see.
I will expand in glatt's earlier remark. "He betrayed his wife" Really? How are we to know? Maybe, probably even. But that is not for me to judge. It is really none of my fucking business. JUST AS IT IS NONE OF (fill in the blank)'S FUCKING BUSINESS who I'm sexting. I like Sundae's comments as well. Unless this represents a public contradiction of his public statements on marital fidelity, I don't see the connection.
Also, though it is an axiom that it isn't the deed but the coverup that brings the pain, I understand the motivation. A private matter like this spread across the front pages of the nation is very embarrassing. I don't condone lying, but I don't see how the more appropriate answer of "None of your business" could have carried the day.
Who the fuck are you 'hey'ing? :eyebrow:

I repeat. The issue people have with politicians is almost always hypocrisy.
Not a crime you can go to gaol for, just a "crime" against the electorate that support you. And the danger that if you hide something that you publicly oppose, you are open to blackmail. And if people have political powers, not only is it hypocrisy, but it can divert the course of justice and lead to actual crime.
Once you are in political office, you do not have to commit a literal crime in order for your post to be untenable. A single person, an openly gay person, a person who acknowledges and supports a child born out of wedlock, a person with a sibling with a drug habit... Good luck to them all. But if you're hiding something AND denying it AND voting against issues that relate to your own persoal circumstances... that's when my pity dissolves.
Who the fuck are you 'hey'ing? :eyebrow:
not you.
I'm "Hey"ing the spittle-flecked microphones broadcasting this "story". Not you. The posts fell that way because I took such a long time composing my post. The order here is just a coincidence. ok?
Sundae, I agree with you in general. But Wiener was not, as far as I know, one of those Bible thumping bigots like Santorum who invite themselves into other people's bedrooms. If Santorum was found in a similar compromising situation, then I think that would be news worthy. Only because of the hypocrisy.
It's true that the traditional take on this kind of thing is that it opens one up to blackmail. That's something for the voters to consider next time around for this guy. Without evidence that he was blackmailed, I can't hold that against him.

“Having the respect of your constituents is fundamental for a member of Congress. In light of Anthony Weiner’s offensive behavior online, he should resign,” the Pennsylvania congresswoman, who serves as chairwoman of recruiting and candidate services for the DCCC, told POLITICO.
I think at this point it would probably be a good thing if he would go ahead and resign,"[/QUOTE]
Former Democratic National Committee Chairman Tim Kaine, said Tuesday Weiner should resign because he lied about the scandal.
And Democratic sources told POLITICO that members of Weiner’s staff are looking for other jobs.
Even one of Weiner’s closest Republican friends says it’s time for him to go.
Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) said he is “sad” for Weiner because he’s “lost the trust and faith” of people around him. “Since he made the admission, I think he has no choice but to step down,”

Probably all just posturing, but its a lil early for them all to be jumping ship. I'm wondering if he ever met any of these women or? There has to be more to this.
How have Wiener's actions impacted his job performance?
He made himself a target of the press and is very distracted right now.
This is a neutral effect. Many, (manymanymany) times politicians attract the attention of the press. This practically always presents the opportunity to portray the politician as a target by some.
He may well be distracted, there's a lot going on in a situation like this. But I don't see how this has impacted his job performance. EVERYBODY has stuff going on, and the magnitude of these kinds of events runs the gamut from trivial to catastrophic. How each of us behaves in the face of this universal human condition is what *I* believe should be the evidence on which we should base our judgement.
Is he getting his job done?

For those that have their morality offended, I would observe that there are reports that his wife has made a statement that she'll stand by him. Would those calling for his resignation question her judgement too?

A Democratic congressman exposes his penis. You would have thought Saddam launched his weapons of mass destruction. At what point does an extremist political agenda become insulting to everyone in the Cellar? Why so many posts about Wiener. Why did these same people never once ask in eight years what any patriot would ask - such as "When do we go after bin Laden?" And almost no complaints about a real scumbag and wacko extremist - Armey?
Perspective. Or should I say emotional bias never stops replacing intelligent thought. Still waiting for quotes from Limbaugh and Fox News so that we can all be saved from evil Democrats and their naked penis.

I just think Souder is more of a hypocrite. :)
The argument is that he made a vow to remain faithful to his wife, and he broke that vow, knowingly and repeatedly.
He also made a vow to serve the people of NY, honestly and to the best of his ability. Now we are left to wonder whether he considers remaining true to the latter vow.
Further, one of the main things we look for in an elected official is good judgement. When to exercise caution, when to take a risk, etc. He has shown monumentally poor judgement in his private life, which raises questions regarding his judgement in other areas.
In a story that gets weirder by the hour, the ongoing saga of Rep. Anthony Weiner has a new twist. His wife is pregnant.
Weiner and his wife, Huma Abedin, a top aide to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, have told close friends she is in the early stages of pregnancy, the New York Times reported.

TMZ has a new batch of photos of Weiner that he took of himself, in various stages of undress, at the gym.
In two of the pics he's holding weiner, junior.
After looking at the pics, all I can say is that guy certainly seems to be in love with himself.
In an exclusive interview with TODAY’s Ann Curry that will air on Tuesday’s show, President Barack Obama said that if he were Democratic Congressman Anthony Weiner right now, he would resign in the wake of the scandal in which Weiner admitted to sending explicit photos of himself to women online.
“I can tell you that if it was me, I would resign,’’ Obama told Curry.
So what would be the cost to tax payers for a special election if Weiner resigns? Why not have his constituents judge him in his next bid for office?
Dunno Nirvana, but there is no way he is going to resign.
If he did, he would forfeit his salary, insurance and pension benefits.
He cannot afford to do that. He was not one of the rich bastards.
The ethical argument against outing closeted public figures is that, basically, it's "none of our business." Their private lives are not relevant or newsworthy. But in the case of anti-gay politicians, their private lives seem very relevant. Ted Haggard has certainly sounded more tolerant -- or he has at least ceased engaging in hypocritical political activism against gay rights -- since he was outed. ("I don't judge people anymore," he said, which is about as much as you can ask for.) Barney Frank became one of the most prominent gay politicians in the world since his outing, long ago. Ken Mehlman now fights for marriage equality. Carl Kruger switched his vote. Keeping "open secrets" that "everyone knows" from the public is already a questionable journalistic practice, and now there's a great deal of evidence that the private lives of politicians have very real effects on public policy.
linkRepresentative Anthony D. Weiner has told House leaders and friends that he plans to resign his seat after coming under growing pressure from his Democratic colleagues to leave the House, said a top Democratic official and two people told of Mr. Weiner’s plans.
The top Democratic official said Anthony Weiner called Representative Nancy Pelosi and Representative Steve Israel last night while they were at the White House picnic to inform them he had decided to resign on Thursday.
Mr. Weiner plans to resign in Brooklyn at 2 p.m., according to two people told of his plans.
The news comes as Democratic leaders prepared to hold a meeting on Thursday to discuss whether to strip the 46-year-old Congressman of his committee assignments, a blow which would severely damage his effectiveness.
Mr. Weiner began telling his most trusted advisers about his decision on Wednesday night by phone, informing them that it no longer seemed fair to his constituents and his colleagues for him to remain in office.

This is ridiculous. So far, I've seen nothing that should make him resign.
I don't understand the hoopla.
I think FSM (or GOD) is in charge of this one.
Yeah, he's a rascally rat clown-ass, but so what? If everyone who's a clown had to resign...well a lot of y'all wouldn't be able to afford computers. ;)
Meh...
It's time to bring up this saying again: No one died when Weiner lied.
Why are most Americans so squeamish about all things sexual?
Here's one I do care about.
Why do famous politicians get to take a nice mug shot. Why isn't he holding a board with his stats on it in front of his chest like other bad guys?

He should grow up, sexually...or get him some and get it quick. "Look at mah wiener...LOOK at it." Meh. Is there a great guy attached to it? Then never mind.
re: Edwards' mug shot. Smarmy much? Blech.
I didn't think they let you smile for a mug shot...
oh wait thats the DMV... nevermind.
I'm glad the Weiner pulled out in time! Whew.
Listening to Kate Obenshane on "To The Point" and she's excoriating Weiner. She's fluid, with excellent breath control and a good vocabulary. Her flexibility, especially in the area of logic is remarkable. She is able to maintain some impressive double standards when similar situations resulting in different outcomes were presented to her. She was able to leap back and say that doesn't apply.
She's something else.
I'll look for the transcript later.
I don't see what crime, what transgression has taken place here. I agree with classic who stated that this demonstrates bad judgement. But that's not a hangin offense, certainly not grounds for resignation. We'd have no government at all if that were applied uniformly.

Congress interruptus.

Heeeeee!
Falling on his sword was the thing to do.

You're killin' me.
He would have got the sack, otherwise.
C'mon, peeps, do I have to make ALL the puns by myself? Infimonkey? Sheldon?
I'm sorry, Zen. I was going to respond but my pen is stuck. ;)
Plus I was feeling crotchety.

Plus I was feeling crotchety.
Are those two somehow connected? ;)
So have we taken his pound of flesh yet?
Almost - When he gets out of "rehab" there sill be a lil flurry to get those last few scraps.
Sir, you take me too seriously.
He had to go. He would have rost the next erection anyway.
You spent too much time in Japan, dude.

So it gets applied un-uniformly, enough to chastise those who could use it into either better behavior or greater discretion. Not wholly bad.
