Errata on the "Jill Leaving" Incident.

Flint • May 10, 2011 10:47 am
I often don't bother responding to demonstrably false statements, but in this case, since the intent was slanderous, I have a few clarifications.

DanaC;732271 wrote:
Now I'd like to get back the fact that you think Undertoad, Aliantha, Limey, Footfootfoot, BigV and Griff are weakminded fools who need to grow up or leave the cellar.

This is a conflation of two posts from different threads, relating to two discrete groups.

#1: In the "House Resolution" thread, I was accused of questioning Jill's knowledge of and ability to interpret news. After I explained that this was not the case, I deemed those who chose to continue these accusations as "weak-minded fools" and "sloppy thinkers." I maintain this position.

#2: In the "Hand Wringing" thread, I stated those who favor a moderation solution do not practice an adult thought process. I maintain this position.

Note that after Dana's repeated, dogged attempts to mischaracterize who I referred to with the above descriptors, I simply started using them interchangeably in order to comply with her wishes of painting me as a villain, i.e. "Okay, I'm the big bad boogeyman--so what’s your point?"

Summary of the topics of discussion:
On Jill leaving: People are free to make their own decisions. If you're leaving, leave.
On the issues, as described, with the Politics Forum: Don't know, don't care. Leave me out of it.
On employing more moderation on the Cellar: Don't want it, don't need it. Adults can handle their own affairs.
On responding to personal attacks against myself: If it is hypocritical for me to do so, then I am a hypocrite.
Spexxvet • May 10, 2011 10:56 am
On starting two threads about this issue: you care
On claiming not to care: you're being intellectually dishonest
On being being intillectually dishonest: here's your second card :f28:
On Dana's "slander": be an adult. Flag here with the slander flag, and leave The Cellar, or don't, we don't care.:p:

If you leave, don't feel like you need to make an announcement. Just go away and find someplace that you like.

The only people who have suggested moderation in one form or another, in this thread, are Undertoad, Aliantha, Limey, Footfootfoot, Griff and myself, though mine was a joke suggestion.

So, all these people are just childish idiots who need to grow the fuck up or leave the cellar?

Or was it aimed mainly at me? In which case it doesn't make a lot of sense as, my flippant comment about red and yellow cards aside, I have spent much of this thread arguing against increased moderation.

You have just characterised a bunch of people as childish because they have a different view of how the board might work to the one you hold. Whilst steadfastly refusing to engage with the issue at hand.

Seemingly it was you who engaged in conflation. From that post on I could quite rightly suggest that you had called those people weak-minded fools.

For a man who claims not to care you're doing a belting job of demonstrating the exact opposite. I'm also struck by how much you are making the affair all about you. Again for someone who claims he wants to be kept out of our petty squabbling, you're doing a bang-up job of placing yourself front and centre.

Keep it up though, please. It's terribly entertaining.

There may be some mileage in moderated debate threads? I personally never go into the politics forum. Initially this was because I don't understand US politics, more recently it's been because I hear that it's a slanging match rather than a debating forum.
I'd be willing to try being a politics thread moderator (for one thread) if that would help to try an experiment?

I'd hardly call this statement "in favour of moderation". I was offering to help trial something. That doesn't make me in favour of it per se, in my view, simply in favour of trying it (along the lines of "I don't agree with what you say but support your right to say it").
DanaC • May 10, 2011 11:13 am
Well, to be honest, i think that was the tone of most of the people who proffered suggestions. I don't recall anyone arguing vehemently for more controls. A few suggestions were thrown out and discussed, and fairly quickly dismissed as unworkable or undesirable.

OK, first of all, I want to be left out of this because I feel like I got lumped into something based on a misinterpretation of something I posted, generally about the nature of news and received information and the application of critical thinking skills or lack thereof. It was not intended to refer to anyone specifically, except a few of my ex-coworkers.

Secondly, Slander is spoken and libel is written. An easy mnemonic is S as in Slander and Spoken, Libel as in written, like books in a Library.

So, Flint was actually, possibly Libeled, not Slandered on this forum.

Thirdly, I am saddened immeasurably that not one of you dwellars has thought about the real loss to the community as a result of Jill's leaving and that is the near 100% likelihood that she would have been posting personal NSFW pics within a week or two of her recent return. I think that ship has sailed.

In conclusion, I hope you are all happy with yourselves and can sleep at night.
lookout123 • May 10, 2011 11:46 am
considering Jill was really Redux's drag persona, I don't feel a real loss on the whole NSFW issue.

I think I just threw up in my mouth a bit
SamIam • May 10, 2011 12:21 pm
Why is this thread in Meta? Are Flint's disagreements with other members up in Homebase so profound that they must be hashed out here too?

Flint wrote:
So the question is: do we want to live in a constrained society, bound by rigid roles deemed "acceptable" by the noisiest complainers, or do we want to grow the fuck up, shut the fuck up, and forget about this crybaby bullshit?

Flint wrote:

So which is it, Flint? You're sounding a bit hypocritical to me.

You started an entire new thread down here, apparently because you feel so maligned. Maybe you should follow your own advise in the first quote. You jumped right into the "Jill" thread and remained there, making provocative comments. Why are you so surprised that you received replies in kind?

I award you the head bag for your pretense at cluelessness :headbag: and the bawling award for being able to dish it out, but not take it. :bawling:

Both? On Baked beans??? What brand do you use, man? Van Camps???????
Sundae • May 10, 2011 2:13 pm
Baked beans need brown sauce. Preferably HP Sauce.
As do scrambled eggs. And bacon sandwiches (and not the hard strips you call bacon either!)

There.
monster • May 10, 2011 3:18 pm
Ur latest food reaction was caused by brown sauce. so there.
Sundae • May 10, 2011 3:20 pm
Flint should think on that next time I read one of his posts and console myself with scrambled egg.
And then get a bad reaction.

And DIE.

I finally got curious enough to find out what English bacon is. Wiki, of course, had the answer. English bacon is (generally) smoked and cured pork loin. What we in the US call Canadian bacon (not the deli version) - but may include some fattier bits.

I've had Canadian bacon. It was pretty good. But I think I'd rather have my pork loin barbecued. Seems a waste to use it as a side dish for breakfast.

Don't be embarrassed abut being curious, Pete. It's probably just a phase.

Many English people - well, many I know - trim the fat off their bacon. In fact quite a few people I know would NEVER order a bacon cob or baguette for fear of getting fatty bacon - biting into it assuming it's meat and having a flabby piece of undercooked fat attached to rind slap down their chin. RETCH.

My memory of Merkin bacon is that it is threaded with the fat, but crisped enough that it's hard to differentiate. I also remember it as being exceptionally salty.

The above is not meant as a criticim, just a difference. And I've only been to the States twice, so I can't say I've tasted a whole continent of bacon anyway.

My family (who have sampled all three) say Aussie bacon is something else again; far more meaty.
footfootfoot • May 10, 2011 4:01 pm
American bacon is all over the map in terms of meatiness, fattiness, saltiness, smokiness, etc. I have a few favorites, local farms, etc.
monster • May 10, 2011 8:58 pm
American bacon is smoked streaky bacon and they like it well done.

Let them snicker all they want!

I don't care! You know why?

Because we got the bombs, that's why!

Two words -- nuclear fucking weapons, OK? Russia, Cuba, Romania - they can have all the democracy they want. They can have a democracy cakewalk right through the middle of Tiananmen Square and it won't make a lick of difference, because we’ve got the bombs, OK? John Wayne's not dead - he's frozen! And when we find a cure for cancer, we're gonna thaw out the Duke and he's gonna be pretty pissed off. You know why? You ever taken a cold shower? Well, multiply that by 15 million times. That's how pissed off the Duke's gonna be.

I'm gonna get the Duke and John Cassavetes and Lee Marvin and Sam Peckinpah and a case of whisky and drive down to Texas…

Sorry...

I lived on cheesy comedy growing up. I had the old Smothers Brothers and Bill Cosby shows on vinyl and would fall asleep listening to them nightly as a kid.

I wasn't smart enough to really appreciate Monty Python on vinyl. Visually brilliant, but for some reason I needed the visual to make it all click.

Bob Newhart! Thanks 3ft.

God, I listened to his albums so much I knew all the routines by heart :P

I don;' know what it was like in the States, but in the UK we had then, and have now a hell of a lot of radio comedy. It's a medium we get used to very young I think.

Did he cover starting the car? And the "other way of stopping". What's "the other way of stopping"? Throwing it in reverse. That … would do it.

The other way of stopping. God his timing is so great. I have that on vinyl. I should rip it.
DanaC • May 11, 2011 5:19 pm
Oh you must! and then when you've ripped it you really ought to zip it up and send me a copy *grins*

His timing was just immaculate. Even now, and it must be at least ten years since I last revisited it, I can still hear the pauses when I read.

On Bob Newhart, I had occasion to meet his mother a few months before she passed away. She was elderly and obstinate; but, dependent so when she wanted to get up to do something I asked her if she needed help to which she replied "What do I look like, a horses ass?" I responded "I don't know, I've never been this close to one." Then mother Newhart grumbled "Well, at least you've got a sense of humor." I could see that the apple hadn't fallen far from the tree.

What's a Greek urn?

It's a large vase used by the ancient Greeks for storing liquids and grains.

I wasn't expecting you to give that answer.

Neither were thousands of smart-alec listeners.

Oh I used to love Dave Allen's show. Don't know if it had the same name here. But that's another one that we used to gather as a family for.Come to think of it, TV pretty much formed the core of our family's interactions lol.

Funnily enough, I was intending, after our discussion on comeduans, to dig out a Dave Allen clip for this thread :)

One of the things I used to love with Dave Allen was his sign-off. 'May your God go with you'. I liked that. It was warm and inclusive.

I also remember being completely fascinated with the fact that one of his fingers had the top missing. Funny the stuff that sticks.

Dave Allen was great.

My folks had (and probably still have) the recording of the concert that was held to raise money for the victims of Cyclone Tracy. There was a segment with Paul Hogan (at least a decade before Crocodile Dundee) doing standup...loved it. He still had stuff left in his repoitoire back then.
