Down for two hours

Undertoad • Apr 30, 2011 5:22 pm
It looks like a certain Dwellar's Mac was in a state where it was requesting to start a new thread OVER AND OVER AND OVER, and this in the middle of a Yahoo spider sweep, crushed us.

I have had to block her. Hopefully she'll reboot, or whatever.
footfootfoot • Apr 30, 2011 5:27 pm
Are you going to name names? I wasn't aware there were any mac users on teh cellar. Do they still even make macs?

I was out in the garden, kicking ass and taking names. Now I'll ice my shoulder.
Sundae • Apr 30, 2011 5:31 pm
Oh thank FSM it wasn't just one of my periodic outages.

Did said Dwellar crash the TicketSoup website too?
And put Dani & Limey's phones on voicemail?
Frustatrated minds need to know.
zippyt • Apr 30, 2011 5:34 pm
I wus woundering WTF !!!
But UT to the Rescue !! Again !!!!

Tanks Dude !!!
Undertoad • Apr 30, 2011 5:38 pm
Actually I can't say what type of Apple for sure.
HungLikeJesus • Apr 30, 2011 5:41 pm
Those Macs are virus magnets.
Undertoad • Apr 30, 2011 5:41 pm
Whoa, I am confused. Can't even say Apple, user agent strings are crazy these days and I am not up on the latest!

I know she's from Colorado though, that I'm sure of.
Undertoad • Apr 30, 2011 5:45 pm
OK. Now I get it. She uses Chrome on Vista.
bluecuracao • Apr 30, 2011 5:45 pm
Oh good, it wasn't me then. Whew!
HungLikeJesus • Apr 30, 2011 5:46 pm

I swear it wasn't me. I don't even know what a Mac looks like. Plus, I've been here at the motel using their old e-machine. Carmine will vouch for me. Hey! Carrrrrmine!

she didn't do it - Carmine :p:
Gravdigr • Apr 30, 2011 7:03 pm
I had mac'n'cheese for lunch. At my computer. Should I not have done that? No one said not to do that.
jimhelm • Apr 30, 2011 7:09 pm
may have been her phone?

I have a Mac and I love it.
ZenGum • Apr 30, 2011 8:42 pm
Vista??? Who the heck is using that?
monster • Apr 30, 2011 8:57 pm
beest is using that. except he's away all weekend paintballing in indiana with no interwebs.

OMG! That's ME! But I don't have a Mac. :eek::confused::eek:
But maybe it was me because I think I left my computer on when I went to work today, and I have no idea what it may be doing in my absence. The motel computer uses Windows Explorer, but my one at home uses Vista, and I just recently started using Chrome.

Oh, I feel terrible! I am so sorry! :(

And how could it do that without me knowing?
jimhelm • Apr 30, 2011 9:58 pm
I think I know who, but I wouldn't want to throw any gas like liquids on the fire

just on case I'm wrong.
footfootfoot • Apr 30, 2011 10:01 pm
Well, there's a first time for everything Jim.
SamIam • Apr 30, 2011 10:47 pm
No, you're right in your suspicions, Jim. I feel so bad. I can't figure out what happened, and I'm stuck here at work until 10:00pm. :thepain:
Undertoad • Apr 30, 2011 11:31 pm
Well your home addy is blocked now, but reboot your router and it may get you a fresh usable address.
ZenGum • May 1, 2011 1:59 am
When I read "Down for two hours" I though of this:

but then, I am a pervert.

DanaC • May 1, 2011 7:34 am
I use Vista.

But not Chrome

How do I reboot my router? Is that the same as rebooting my computer?
Undertoad • May 1, 2011 12:06 pm
Not necessary now because your Vista system is not clobbering us. But did you notice anything odd about the system when you got home? Was it locked up or anything?

Yes - turn it off, count to ten, turn it back on again.
Sundae • May 1, 2011 12:12 pm
You must have a degree in programming, Limey!

Yes, the system was completely locked. I suspect that what triggered the melt down on my end was the alarm app that I had loaded onto my desktop. Without anyone there to stop it, the alarm just pinged away and must have been doing that the entire 10 hours I was at work yesterday.

WHAT? MY computer AGAIN? This is getting too weird. There must be something I can do to help fix it from my end. Any ideas, UT? The message I'm getting when I try to log into the cellar is "Website unavailable. Try again later." I see no evidence of my computer repeatedly trying to log in here. And most of the time I can log onto the Cellar, no problem.

Also, I belong to all sorts of message boards and all sorts of sites, and not a one of them gives me trouble.

I don't understand.

PS What if I switched to Mozilla Firefox? Would that help?
Griff • May 7, 2011 9:52 pm
That's too weird Sam.
Undertoad • May 7, 2011 10:05 pm
Here's what I know. At 3:17 pm Eastern, you visited the thread Birthday Announcement and posted post #13 there.

Exactly one hour later, your browser made a call to the server, possibly requesting the thread be redisplayed.

Exactly one hour later, it tried again.

Exactly one hour later, your browser started making about ten requests a second to redisplay the thread.

It's worth trying Firefox but I don't know why this would happen in the first place...
Griff • May 7, 2011 10:07 pm
Malware?

hmmmm... Lucky 13. I have no idea what I did after I posted in the birthday thread. I think I got involved in a very funny thread on another forum.

I am quite literally blind to time. It would be quite the feat for me to do ANYTHING repeatedly exactly on the hour.

I would suspect malware, too; but the other forums I visit have had no problems. They are very large forums, however - far bigger than the Cellar. I still don't get how a $300 E-Machine from Walmart can wreck so much havoc. When I get home tonight, I will run a malware and anti-virus program. I will also switch my browser to Firefox.

Hope that helps.
skysidhe • May 8, 2011 1:14 am
Do you have dial up?

Is your browser set to open the last page visited?

Can you contact your isp provider?
Undertoad • May 8, 2011 1:35 am
Well the E-machine only has to make the request for the page; the server has to make many database connections in order to build that page, so in short order the whole thing is swamped.

The Cellar server is getting old too, and takes less to get swamped, which is why I really had hoped to get that other server operational (I'm still working on that).

No, I have broadband.

No, it opens to my homepage which is something like myreferencedesk.com.

wrote:

I suppose I could. Never thought of doing that. Could they possibly help, UT?

Anyhow, after I got home from the motel, I downloaded the free version of malbytes and ran it on my computer. There were ten malware programs and malbytes claimed to have taken care of them all.

In addition, AVG is running a deep scan while I'm at work this morning (Is it OK to have both malbytes and AVG at the same time?)

Is there any way I can tell my computer to stop attempting to get on a site after 3 tries or so?

I'm really upset by this. If there is no solution, I'll have to ban myself from the Cellar until I can get a new computer, and THAT is on the very distant horizon. The thought of no more Cellar makes me very sad. :(
Undertoad • May 8, 2011 12:47 pm
Your ISP will look at you funny for free. That level of support is included with your contract.

Anyway, yeah, this is such a weird thing that I'd wager the malware check will take care of it, or browsing Cellar with Firefox only.
DanaC • May 8, 2011 12:51 pm
run Malware Bytes.

Yeah huh. I forgot. They are only script readers. By the time they run through their whole 2 pages they can only look funny since they will have no other options.

I use chrome just fine. Firefox had problems. I don't think it is her browser, but then that's less than a 2 cent opinion.

I mean all browsers can be hijacked. If that's what the problem is?
SamIam • May 8, 2011 2:32 pm
Well, I ran the malware program and I'm now using Firefox. Crossing my fingers!
skysidhe • May 8, 2011 4:31 pm
As a test,( when you go to work ) try unplugging your pc from the modem. Or shut the modem off. It would be impossible for the same thing to happen from your pc.
SamIam • May 8, 2011 9:21 pm
OK, I caught my PC in the act! It wasn't attempting to get into the Cellar, but instead it was attempting repeatedly to log into another, quite large forum. I guess they're big enough that such things don't bother them?

Sky, it's too hard to get at my plugs and modem - they're behind my desk and bookshelf.

What I will do is shut down my computer. It still seems to me that there should be a command to tell my computer to not attempt multiple log-ins.

This is a recent thing and if it's a virus, neither malbytes nor AVG caught it. But I can only use the free versions - too poor to buy the complete program. :(
limey • May 9, 2011 5:47 am
Try Spybot SEarch & Destroy as well!
Undertoad • May 9, 2011 8:30 am
What was it doing Sam? Was the screen refreshing or something?
SamIam • May 9, 2011 1:02 pm
Even though I was already logged into "Samsforum.com," small print was flashing in the lower left hand corner of my screen. It read:

"sending request to Samsforum.com"

followed by:

"waiting for Sansforum.com"

These messages cycled very rapidly. The last thing I had done there was reply to a post (my response did appear on the thread).:confused::confused:
Undertoad • May 9, 2011 1:07 pm
Yup, that's surely the same thing going on. Weird.
skysidhe • May 9, 2011 1:11 pm
Can she search for the auto runs in task manager or the firewall? Or block that auto run in the firewall?

...something like that. It sounds more nefarious than that but ...it's worth a try.

What the hell is that? :lol2:

I liked the iron. I hate ironing. I'm anti-domestic. When I was young I would iron a shirt and my mom would take one look and say "give me that! Looks like you ironed it with a rock!"

But there was no rock piece, so I liked the iron.
