If you don't, someone else will.
Spexxvet • Apr 26, 2011 9:27 am
It's rated R. There's a whole lot of the "N" word, and sexual references. Top 10 funniest movie.
infinite monkey • Apr 26, 2011 9:31 am
Puh. Why not? Kids hear worse IRL. 13 years old? Oh, and she's smart. Yeah, she can handle it.
wolf • Apr 26, 2011 10:02 am
Yes, you may. You really only need to consult when there is potential to warp children not your own.

You, on the other hand, may bear the consequences of your own folly.

(yes, a 13 year old can handle Blazing Saddles, which is rather tame by today's standards, isn't it?)
BigV • Apr 26, 2011 11:36 am
Yes, monster, you should show Blazing Saddles to your 13 year old.

Better late than never.

Pretty tame aye.

My 13 year old niece is currently on a Tarantino kick. She's insisting that I really have to watch Deathproof.

That's what we thought.....
DanaC • Apr 26, 2011 1:00 pm
I think everyone has to see it at least once in their lives. The earlier the better.

You really have to watch Death Proof.

craaaaaaaaaaaap. I just went over to the shelves... I can't find my copy. Do you have it?
Sundae • Apr 26, 2011 4:39 pm
We watched Blazing Saddles obsessively at 13/14.
We used to whisper "Up yours nigger" to eachother in the old lady's voice and fall about laughing.
We knew it was rude and racist, but that's why we found it so funny.
It was grossly inapproprite, and that made it funnier.

Didn't find the farting scene funny though.
Everyone else thought that was the best bit.
Clodfobble • Apr 26, 2011 5:24 pm
What? NO WAY. You should definitely NOT SHOW THAT MOVIE to your kid.

Sorry, I was just rebelling against everyone else's conformist answers. The movie's fine for a 13-year-old.
Gravdigr • Apr 26, 2011 6:56 pm
I would show it to my teenager if I had one. But, before I did, I would try to explain that, even way back in 1974, Mel Brooks was trying to show the ridiculousness of racism through humor. (Something some adult Dwellars have problems grasping.) I believe he was trying to take the power from the word 'nigger', (and racism in general), by using it as a foil for humor so often it loses it's grip in the psyche.

And the reason he used that word and that particular form of racism more than, say, the Irish, the Scottish, the Chinese, the Jewish, (and he hits them all) is that 'white-on-black' racism was the form of racism that was way prevalent at that time.

Show it to 'em. But, make sure they know he was making fun of racism and racists, not the races themselves.
Gravdigr • Apr 26, 2011 6:57 pm
That said, "Blazing Saddles" is my favorite movie of all time.
HungLikeJesus • Apr 26, 2011 6:59 pm
After that they'll be ready for Office Space.

ZenGum • Apr 27, 2011 3:33 am
"We'll give land to the Chinks and the Niggers .... but we don't want the IRISH!"

With parental guidance, it is a fine film.

You should. An old boyfriend wanted me to watch it and I was thinking "it sounds STUPID. Hmmmph."

Once I watched I was hooked. It's very funny.

I had to ask my Mum why that was funny.
She said, "Oh the Americans always have to hate someone."
A very unsatisfactory response. I decided it must be a reference to terrorism. Took me a while to really understand it.

Then again, around the same time I asked them what a heterosexual was and they explained it was a man who fancied other men. I don't think they had ever heard the term in their lives. And deep in heteroland, why should they?
Gravdigr • Apr 27, 2011 4:38 pm
OMG!!! Sundae lost her Girl!! When did this happen??

Please, we can't handle changes of this magnitude.
monster • May 23, 2011 10:14 pm
So we went the whole bad parent hog and all watched it tonight. :D It was funny to see extra funnies that mean nothing to Brits.... so many layers of subtlety ...and so much unsubtlety  ....and so many catchphrases the kids already knew :lol2:

...We don't need no stinking bad parent badges

WAY TO GO !!
Meet it Head on !!

Funny damn movie !!!
monster • May 23, 2011 11:42 pm
The best (and most informative) bit was watching the kids' reactions to the various jokes and double entendres. Hebe got almost all of them and was embarassed by a few. Hector got the most obvious sexuals ones and was embarrassed, Thor missed them all but loved the slapstick and of the five of us probably enjoyed the movie the most. After the beans/farting round the campfire, he begged us to pause otherwise he "really was going to pee himself laughing"
zippyt • May 23, 2011 11:44 pm

interestingly, this movie was broadcast on network television back in the day. The only scene that was cut was the farting scene.
