We watched Blazing Saddles obsessively at 13/14.
We used to whisper "Up yours nigger" to eachother in the old lady's voice and fall about laughing.
We knew it was rude and racist, but that's why we found it so funny.
It was grossly inapproprite, and that made it funnier.
Didn't find the farting scene funny though.
Everyone else thought that was the best bit.

I would show it to my teenager if I had one. But, before I did, I would try to explain that, even way back in 1974, Mel Brooks was trying to show the ridiculousness of racism through humor. (Something some adult Dwellars have problems grasping.) I believe he was trying to take the power from the word 'nigger', (and racism in general), by using it as a foil for humor so often it loses it's grip in the psyche.
And the reason he used that word and that particular form of racism more than, say, the Irish, the Scottish, the Chinese, the Jewish, (and he hits them all) is that 'white-on-black' racism was the form of racism that was way prevalent at that time.
Show it to 'em. But, make sure they know he was making fun of racism and racists, not the races themselves.
That said, "Blazing Saddles" is my favorite movie of all time.

A very unsatisfactory response. I decided it must be a reference to terrorism. Took me a while to really understand it.

So we went the whole bad parent hog and all watched it tonight. :D It was funny to see extra funnies that mean nothing to Brits.... so many layers of subtlety ...and so much unsubtlety :lol: ....and so many catchphrases the kids already knew :lol2:

The best (and most informative) bit was watching the kids' reactions to the various jokes and double entendres. Hebe got almost all of them and was embarassed by a few. Hector got the most obvious sexuals ones and was embarrassed, Thor missed them all but loved the slapstick and of the five of us probably enjoyed the movie the most. After the beans/farting round the campfire, he begged us to pause otherwise he "really was going to pee himself laughing"

interestingly, this movie was broadcast on network television back in the day. The only scene that was cut was the farting scene.
