What Jurisdiction does the Govt. Have

Nigerian Government rejects 'fatwa'

I've always thought that beauty pagents are barbaric (not in any kind of knee-jerk feminist way, I just think they're stupid), and of course this situation has proved my point.

However, in reading the linked article I wondered ... what authority does the secular government have to lift the fatwa?

If I were that reporter, I'd be as far away from Nigeria as possible for the rest of my life.

From the article:

Zamfara's deputy governor Mamuda Aliyu Shinkafi told religious leaders in the state capital, Gusau: "Like Salman Rushdie, the blood of Isioma Daniel can be shed."

Would the fatwa be satisfied by the shedding of even one drop of blood?

No, I know that's not the intent, espacially given the reference to Salman Rushdie, but I found myself wondering that as I reread the article.

Or anyplace else Sharia law has been imposed. She's come to the US, I understand...too many enlightened Islamists in the UK, evidently.

Insofar as I can tell this isn't exactly about the pagent itself. It's about the right of the Jihad gang to execute anybody they think has transgressed their religous law. Of course that's really because they're so socially oppressed....or so some of their chums here will tell you.
