11/27/2002: Elephant kiss

I've had this one waiting for Friday, but this is a Friday of sorts and it's getting to be a very popular image out there, so here it is!

What it is: the woman is actuallly kissing the elephant's tongue. She's Rak Maram, and she's an elephant trainer in Thailand.

I have heard that elephants are ornery sorts, and about two weeks ago there was a story of an elephant that kinda went nuts and killed its trainer with great malice. So this shot is not only weird, but impressive in a way, and maybe stupid in a way...

I'm seeing that old SNL skit. Lost appendage gallons and gallons of blood spraying all over.

I always thought that a kiss was something that both the recepient and the giver were supposed to enjoy (ideally). Now for the life of me I can't see why either party would enjoy this kiss.

It really looks like the elephant's about to eat her head.

Yeah, and she has one of those little miner's headbands with a light so she can see...
