I couldn't open the article, but will try again a bit later, so my comment will be generally rather than specifically focussed on the article....musings rather than anything concrete (but that would sum up most of my posts anyway). There's an organisation in Australia called the Grey Man that raises funds to try to put a stop to human trafficking.
I've also wondered after reading the Millenium trilogy to what extent it goes on in Europe. Obviously, there is human trafficking, it was more of a question of what the numbers are per year and what can be done to prevent it or minimise it.
There is a core values question built in there. What we are vs what we claim to be. We may need to rethink that "Land of the Free" motto or maybe earn it.
This really struck me.
There was an article in The New Yorker about how the Italian mafia has switched from runnig drugs to selling counterfiet artisanal extra virgin Olive oil. The penalties for getting caught are comparatively miniscule yet the ROI on fake olive oil is hugely greater than for drugs.
