fishing 2011

finally, got to go fishing for the first time in over 5 years today. my roommate has a friend that owns a beach house on boliver peninsula just across galveston bay. we were roughing it today. not! anyway, the first two fish (redfish were all i (we) caught) were not big enough to keep. the first one was just over 15 inches and the second just over 16. they have to be within 20 - 24 inches to keep. otherwise they must be over 28 inches and you have to tag them from your license. the third one i caught got away because he wrapped the line around a barnacle covered pier pylon and snapped the line. number 4 however i landed. cooking it up for supper now on the grill with fresh jalapeno, garlic, bell pepper, lemon, crushed sea salt and butter. the first three pics are the canal and garage of the house....the next are obviously the fish....

a cold front moved through last night so that messed up the tide movement today. i'm really surprised we caught what we did....but happy that it wasn't a dry run so to speak.

Is it legal to catch dolphins down there?

dolphins? no. dolphin fish aka mahi mahi? yes.

and this was how it turned out. scrumptious! yellow bell pepper diced and some sliced jalepeno diced and moderately de-seeded, 1 lemon quartered and squeezed, 1 large clove garlic smashed and diced, splash of Worcestershire lots and lots of butter real butter. not the fake stuff, fresh ground pepper and sea salt. peppers and fish? really? yeah. try it. if i can impress my roommate with this recipe you can too! oh i almost forgot the light coating of oregano.

this just occurred to me...why not have a cellar biggest fish contest? winner gets a case of beer (up to a $35 value). here's da rules.... pic must contain yourself and the fish on a measuring tape. so basically one pic with you holding the fish and the other of the fish being measured. whaddya think? yes?

we could do that, exceptin' we'd have to substitute "cock" every time you said "fish".

oh that reminds me...trash fish are not eligible. gar? nope. gar can grow over 7 feet and they are way too easy to catch. i want to keep this contest as fair to everyone that i can. if you can time stamp your pic with the camera please do so. i need a "moderator" or two for judging purposes. so there will be three of us. i nominate sarge and merc for this? y'all cool with that?

seek that is a very berry VERY nice fish.....

another thing. prior fish that have been caught are not eligible. the fish must have been caught from today, January 27th through midnight October 1st.

also thinking about a 2nd and turd place category. need my moderators to help with this.

dayum! :eek: that had to of taken way over an hour to boat side! bet that was fun! if i do one thing this summer it's going to be to restart my offshore fishing trip tradition. some of you remember i'm sure. i just can't wait to get back out there, go to rigs reefs and wrecks and catch red snapper, amberjack, king...the list goes on. here's another idea. once i get planted at my new job how about a few of us, doesn't matter who really, charter a boat and make a weekend trip? just an idea. i live about a half hour give or take from galveston. go fish on a friday and have a cookout saturday. i knowz how to cookz me some fishz. an old thread from years ago

going wednesday. look forward to the first entry. btw still need one more judge. whomever is interested and pm's me or sarge gets it.

correction. going tomorrow. same still applies above though. we want 3 judges so there will be an odd count on the vote if need be or whatever may come up. who wants it?

not a very good pic here. had to do a screen capture cuz paul did video instead of camera on his iphone. more pics hopefully to follow. we went back to the same place today as last time. caught about 8 fish. mostly black drum. the first fish i caught was a 20" redfish then after that it was crabs and black drum. the redfish was more tasty while the drum wasn;t as flaky and tasted quite bland.

edit: ugh! pic didn;t go through for whatev reason. going to get off my butt and go get the camera i was using before it died.....

:D it was a good day off from everything i admit. the first hour or so...nothing. then for about 2 hours they were hitting left and right. once the wind kicked up everything died off as usual. we arrived at high tide then the tide started to move out then came back in. good day it was.

I don't know if we're supposed to be voting or what, but the redfish is the clear winner so far!

yeah but it's an easy beat so it;s not an official entry....but you're right...it is the biggest so far! :D

ok so lemme get this straight. NO ONE has gone fishing lately? f-this! i'm gonna go offshore this month! someone better step up! :D

i've wanted to so bad, but i've just felt like crap.

My son and his buddies went king salmon and halibut fishing last summer in Glacier Bay and between the 5 of them they brought in 800+ pounds of fish! My son is the one on the right, his friend is the skipper of the boat.

Deaaamn! Those are huge fishes!

or very, very small fishermen....
