What are the consequences of internet art theft

Deborah • Jan 12, 2011 4:45 am
There's this guy who keeps stealing everyone's art on an art publishing website. This website is for posting your own art only. We know it's not his art and he even admitted that he posted and sold stolen work. But he's at it again! and I wanted to tell him the consequences of art theft on the internet

This one time I heard about something like that. It was a thing that happened. This one guy was going to say something. I think he did. Maybe not. Either way, I think everybody agrees that sometimes things happen, and sometimes people either do or do not say something about them. Usually, but not always. Right?

To paraphrase someone I have never met, "I honestly don't know anything about art theft online. I've never known a guy who heard about a guy who ever had any experience stealing art online, sorry."

I've never met that guy. His name may or may not have been: Art Thefter--Action Detective!

Is it a public or community art website?

There is an extensive literature researching this, it seems that art theft is the net's third largest sector, after porn and fishing for help with an assignment. Let me just ask, how can there be art theft if we can't say what art even is?

How can this kind of fishing be easier, or less work than actually researching the answer?
footfootfoot • Jan 13, 2011 10:22 am
That kind of question can only come from someone who actually likes to research and write.

This one was interesting from the new mod's POV. Glatt noted that this person was not likely to join the community and what should he do in these cases? I said my approach is to OK them if they aren't spamming and don't have a link. Who knows?

I don't know anything about art theft really.
But I know what I like.

It generated 14 posts. Better than some threads I've started.

If the art thief is stealing originality from the rich to give to the poor, Deborah should be able to empathize.

Hi Deborah

If you *could* communicate with him, what would you tell this guy? What do *you* think the consequences are? What do you think the consequences should be? Does it make a difference if the art is stolen from the internet versus a store? What about a museum? If he stole some of your art, how would you feel? What do you think should be done in that case?

Yours,

Socrates

I can lead you to love
I can take you or leave you
I can ask for the truth
But I'll never believe you
And I'll take what you give me, as long as it's free
Yeah, I steal like a thief
But I'm always a woman to Bruce.......

I had art stolen from me at a venue once. I was really pissed about it for about 2 months. Then I got over it and thought it was cool.

Kerosene: What a cool way to deal with negatives !
HungLikeJesus • Jan 13, 2011 6:57 pm
