jimhelm • Nov 9, 2010 11:16 am
spring 2011?

On October 10, 2010, at the New York Comic Con, Spectra senior editor Anne Groell states that Martin has announced he has five chapters remaining, with sections of the chapters already completed. She also wants to get the manuscript completed by December.[26]

Happy Monkey • Nov 9, 2010 11:43 am
I think she probably has wanted the manuscript done by December several times already. Maybe the prospect of releasing the book with the show's premier will help him over the hump.
Cloud • Nov 9, 2010 11:46 am
pretty much why I stopped reading them. Looked to be a Robert Jordan kind of thing.

Wish they would have made the "Wild Cards" movie.

I saw the ad the other night. I've read a lot of George RR. (loved Tuf Voyaging), but I don't think I ever got around to these.

They're long books; the characters are fucking savage or quite simply savages period, celibate or otherwise. What's been tough for me is to figure just what motivates these characters to go to the extremes they do -- their prize does not seem worth their efforts or their slaughters.

The supernatural Others seem even nastier and if anything even more pointless. So I tend to read that series with a gradually increasing sense of WTF.

I, too, have been waiting for this miniseries forever, and the 5th book for even longer than that. However, I don't have HBO, so I'll have to wait for Netflix to get it. :(
Gravdigr • Nov 10, 2010 1:43 am
I've read Game of Thrones, and a couple others, I think. Game of Thrones was pretty good. I was weaned into those types of stories on RA Salvatore. Everything else is just pretty good.

/drift:

I remember some 'Forgotten Realms'/'Dragonlance'/'Dungeons & Dragons'-type books where the stories all revolved around this horse-culture-type situation. The horse is like their equivalent of buffalo to the American Indian. The horse is woven into almost every nook of their society. They drink fermented mare's milk, everything is made from horses, like leather, blankets, etc.

Put me in mind of Mongolian Hordes, yurts, and khans.

Anybody know what I'm rambling about?
Griff • Nov 10, 2010 6:41 am
I'm trying to knock off the last book in the thrones series, but it is caught up in a 5 book rotation...

GD, If you like that Mongol stuff Conn Iggulden has an excellent series of books. He took the time to live the life and it comes through in the writing.

Thanks for the tip.

Horselords by David Cook, by chance? (Link to Amazon). I remember the book, though I did not read it.

Clodfobble • Dec 5, 2010 4:16 pm
Read them. Even if the TV series is perfect, reading the books will give you an even better appreciation for how perfect it is. If it were anyone else, reading them before watching might take too long... but the way you tear through books, you'll easily have the first one done before the first season comes out. And once you read the first one, no one will have to encourage you to read the rest of them. :)
Griff • Dec 6, 2010 7:26 am
Shouldn't we be encouraging Martin to write the rest of them?:(

jimhelm • Dec 8, 2010 12:23 am
the thing about these books is that there are SO many characters and subplots. I think I read that there are 500+ different characters mentioned throughout this series. I think my favorite character is Jon Snow (although I hate the actor they picked to play him), but Tyrian Lannister is cool too.

I'm betting that Peter Dinkleage will be the most famous-est Little Person EVAR after this plays out.

WINTER IS COMING, bitches

He should be now...he's really good. I never forgot him after the first time I saw him in The Station Agent.

I am almost finished with this book. I have to say, I can't seem to put it down, to my husband's dismay. I am going to have to give it to him when I am finished and will then be a widow for a while. I like Jon Snow and Tyrion is cool, too. I am also curious what will happen with the bastard who makes helms, but I haven't got to the end of the book, yet. Yes, there are so many characters I find myself getting confused. The only real problem I have, though, is figuring out how to pronounce the names of people in my head as I am reading. Consider me obsessed.
Clodfobble • Dec 11, 2010 11:38 pm

wolf • Dec 22, 2010 11:57 am
I stayed up late finishing last night.

I liked it, but I'm not feeling really enthusiastic about it ... don't get me wrong, it's a really good book! But even understanding that it's the first book of an unfinished series, there are a lot more loose ends than I expected. And there weren't a lot of characters that I connected with, for one reason or another. Nobody that I outright liked, except perhaps Bran and Arya, I'm intrigued by Daenerys, but wanted a different resolution for her, and didn't fully understand her embracing of the Dothraki ways. Actually, most of the what happens to people you get to know really sucked when it comes down to it. I cared more about the direwolves. I'm going to continue on, but I have some borrowed books to read before I get to A Clash of Kings.

I do wonder how they're going to squash this monster down into a miniseries, though.

(I really like George RR Martin's writing ... I loved Tuf Voyaging)
Clodfobble • Dec 22, 2010 12:16 pm
It's not going to be a miniseries, it's a full series--every book gets one whole season of episodes.
wolf • Dec 22, 2010 12:18 pm
Even so, I can't figure out how they will squash this one book down into 6 episodes.

EDIT: the blogosphere seems to indicate ten episodes.
kerosene • Dec 28, 2010 10:54 am
I thought the same thing about Daenerys, wolf. That part did not end at all how I had expected. It was kind of a disappointment, actually. I want to read the next book, because I really like the way he tells a story. I just worry that he is going to break my heart again.
jimhelm • Dec 28, 2010 10:58 am
he's not afraid to kill a character (good or bad), that's for sure. but trust me, they just keep getting better, and the world he creates becomes more vivid and huge.
kerosene • Dec 28, 2010 11:01 am
Yeah, I need to get the next book from the library. I read that first one so fast, I lost my momentum.

Unless the author pulls a "King" and paces the releases of the books years apart, you probably won't have that problem. I developed a habit of starting the whole series from the beginning each time a new book was (eventually) published. Maddening.

We're still waiting on the publication of the fifth book.

I'm chugging along through the second book, A Clash of Kings (62% done as of right this minute). More court intrigue and more battling. It's feeling like there's less actual plot advancement than the first book.

I got enticed into starting A Storm of Swords. I was intending to let the series go for a bit and read other things, but it was just sitting there, beckoning, and next thing I knew, I read the prologue, and the first chapter ... and now I'm onto about chapter 10.
jimhelm • Jan 27, 2011 12:15 pm
I was listening to this in the car with the kids yesterday on the way to and from skiing, and had to bring them up to speed on where the story was (only about 1/4 thru the first book) and it was a lot to tell. He builds a storyline pretty quickly. There are already 7 or 8 distinct plot-lines going at this early stage. And he just keeps intertwining and separating them... Lots of authors will run two or three plots through a book... Martin just keeps adding them on, and adding them on. It makes the story so ...big.
kerosene • Jan 27, 2011 2:53 pm
Yes, I know...and it seems like the further into the series we get, the bigger the books get. I love it and curse it for addicting me so easily. He is an amazing story teller.

I know nothing of the books.
Perhaps I should start too.
But the comments about the huge amount of characters gives me the fear. Despite being a prodigious reader I have trouble separating characters with similar names, If there are 500+ I'm going to have confusion somewhere along the line...

Also, it's now being trailed on Sky. As being shown one day after being aired in America (VERY unusual here). Is it a fully British cast? Remember I'm going on trailers here, but all the accents I've heard so far are not even just British, but English. And not just English but Northern! That wo9uld be a reason to watch it all on its own... In the same way I loved True Blood for its setting and accents.

It's been a while since I read the description in the books, but aren't "White Walkers" supposed to be... white? Or at least light colored? Or maybe that thing was just another animated corpse. Or it could be the lighting.

In any case, I can't wait!

The continent that the series takes place in - Westeros - is very much based on English history and lore, much like Middle Earth, and the basis for a lot of the plot is rooted deeply in the Wars of the Roses. The main characters through much of the first book (who remain important throughout the series) are the Stark family, who hail from the northern part of the continent... so it would make sense at least for THEM to have Northern accents, and they have been most heavily featured in the trailers. However, the cast is not all british - Peter Dinklage, who plays one of the many many main characters, actually went to - and graduated from - Bennington College, where I go.

Sundae • Apr 16, 2011 2:17 pm
Ta muchly, Ibram.
I might start with the series and move from there to the books. The basic plot structure might help me make sense of the names.

As long as none of them look like eachother of course.
As in having similar hair or being the same gender.... Hmmm. Maybe start with the books...?

ETA - point of interest - Bran is traditionally pronounced with a long a, as in farm, as opposed to a short a as in tan.
Of course I don't know the author's ethnicity, he might just have been using a made up name.
Clodfobble • Apr 16, 2011 8:37 pm
I always figured it was a shortening of "Brandon." Would you say that one rhyming with farm, or tan?
wolf • Apr 16, 2011 8:56 pm
The NYT Reviewer is clearly stuck in the box of trying to force A Game of Thrones into the same model as most cable dramas, which does the depth of the story a disservice, although I wonder what he might have said if he knew that at the end of the run, the story will remain unfinished. Barely started, really.
jimhelm • Apr 16, 2011 11:35 pm
right! dude clearly did not read the books.

and it is most definitely Bran like tan or man or Stan or can.

Listening to these books on audio book forces your pronunciations. The 1st three of these books are narrated by Roy Dotrice
Roy is also playing Grand Maester Pycelle in the series. Image and that's how he says it. BEST NARRATOR EVAR.

Here is a sample of him doing the voices of Tyrion and Braun as he narrates from Tyrion's perspective... as Tyrion tells his hired Sell Sword/Steward, Braun of the way he met his first wife. This is one guy doing the narrating and all of the characters in these books, mind. He's so effortless as he slips from one voice to the other, and then to the 'narrator' voice that you forget all about him as a narrator. You're seeing the character in your mind. He acts the dialogue, too. If you have 6 minutes, listen to this. Now in these books, he does use the same gruff voice he uses for Braun when he's doing Sandor Clegane and several other tough guys. But then, Tyrion and Varys and Sam Tarley and Doloros Ed, and I don't know how many other distinct voices are unique and quite complete.

The 4th book is done by one John Lee. (click that link and hit the little green arrow under the picture of the book to hear him) Not a bad narrator... a bit slow and quite smitten with his own voice... it's a good one, I suppose, but not so great following Roy.
Sundae • Apr 17, 2011 10:07 am
Just FTR, Stephen Fry mispronounces Hagrid's first name in the Harry Potter audio books.
It should be Roo-BEY-us, not Roo-bee-US.

Also note the shift in Star Wars from HARN-solo, to HAN-solo after the first film.

I'm not going anywhere with this of course. Just that one of my favourite children's books has a character called Bran (Braan) who is named after a raven - being the same word in Welsh, and I have encountered others the same.

Again, when creating a whole world, you are entitled your own history and pronunciation.
jimhelm • Apr 18, 2011 9:15 am

I was wondering that as well. I don't regret reading the books at your suggestion, but I don't know if I would have taken to the series quite so well if I hadn't known what was coming ... and even knowing, I gasped out loud at the concluding scene. I also think they're being far more heavy-handed in revealing the "big secret," using it more to push the plot in obvious ways, rather than with the subtlety of the book.
jimhelm • Apr 18, 2011 11:07 am
yeah... Jamie and Circe doing it doggy style on the floor of a ruined castle room was much more direct than what my imagination had concocted.
wolf • Apr 18, 2011 11:14 am

I figured the abundance of doggie-stylin' was just the director's way of saying, "We're on mutherfuckin' HBO!"
jimhelm • Apr 18, 2011 11:17 am
oh!

well, the part you're talking about went just about how it did in my mind, fwiw.

The areas I thought it went a little quickly were when Robert asked Ned to be his Hand, and the interactions between Jon Snow and Tyrion and Uncle Benjin. Also, when they found the wolves....
Happy Monkey • Apr 18, 2011 11:54 am
I loved it, but I do wonder whether it's moving too quick over important plot points, which may be bad for viewers who haven't read the books.

Or, more precisely, whether it's possible to render these plot points on film at the right pace, as I supect that lingering over them may be as bad or worse than passing them too quickly. Of course, The Wire never waited for its audience to catch up, and there wasn't even a book to make up for it, and I loved that.

So far, the casting has been amazing, and the scenery is gorgeous. I'm excited.

As for the white walker, I paused on it, and it definitely was a very dark color, but it also looked very carved. Maybe it was a helmet.
skysidhe • Apr 18, 2011 12:08 pm

They're ACTORS, ACTING. Other networks have actors, acting.
glatt • Apr 27, 2011 12:21 pm
Plus, it doesn't look "real." Look at reality, and then look at movie stars. Walk through a mall and look at people. Then turn on the tv and look at people. Listen to a typical conversation in real life. Then listen to a conversation on tv. Nobody says "um" or "uh" on tv or in the movies. Everyone on screen looks awesome. I've never watched real people having real sex, but I can guarantee that it wouldn't look anything like what's on HBO. Even regular people making a video of themselves are going to act differently than if there was no camera there. So just having a camera there will make it not real. I think it's quantum mechanics that says you can't observe anything without changing it.

Ok. so I guess, as an actor, it's too freaky to get a boner while your schlong is in a sock and tucked away and a bunch of people are lighting and mic'ing and filming you, right? Coz, as I've said, it looks pretty real.
lookout123 • Apr 27, 2011 1:15 pm

Thank you! We have been wondering the exact same thing about Spartacus. I had been leaning toward the idea that maybe the actors just agreed to actually have sex, it so surely looked like real penetration was going on... They must throw out so many takes where the sock or the patch accidentally peeked out.

I saw Michael Douglas in an interview talking about it. He said it's not a sock, but a big adhesive patch. And you just stick it to your junk and it kind of holds everything in place. It's apparently painful to take off, so after wearing one for some unknown number of scenes, he refused to wear them any more.

I also heard that one of his female costars was unhappy with the experience of doing sex scenes with him. She did not elaborate, but I assume it was after he swore off the patch and he had a boner slapping up against her. Since she would have been wearing a patch, there would have been no penetration, but it would still be unpleasant if you weren't into him.

I'm up to episode 5 and in love with this show. I haven't read the books, but I can almost feel them in the show. I am trying to get a copy of the audiobook now.

Brilliantly cast, stunningly well written and acted. Some of the scenes with the king remind me of A Lion In Winter. Absolutely adore The Imp. I cannot speak highly enough of this series.

Bottom line: This was the best first season of a cable series, and surely the best first season finale, since "Deadwood" back in 2004. Each scene and moment seemed to have been carved out of wood, and they all tied up old business while setting the stage for new business. Season 2 is scheduled for April, 2012. Hurry up, spring.

Happy Monkey • Oct 12, 2011 4:10 pm
I read it. An enjoyable read, but I really felt a lack of plot advancement. Perhaps due to its unusual history of being half a book extended.

But when I look at the synopsis on Wikipedia, quite a lot happened and quite a lot was set up to pay off in upcoming books.

Odd.
Perry Winkle • Oct 12, 2011 4:10 pm
I read all 5 in the course of a month or two. In book 3 he hit the trough that all of these long-running fantasy series run into. He sort-of started climbing out of it in book 5, but he still has a ways to go.

The deus ex machina starts to really grind. I don't know how to develop this character, I'll kill them. I don't know how to get this character out of this situation because there's no reasonable course of action that isn't waiting, so I'll have that character act completely contrary to character.

Hopefully the next one gets out of this rut.

wolf • Oct 13, 2011 12:55 am
Generally I don't mind a regular book ... but I am quite spoiled by the Kindle, especially when it comes to budgie-killing books. I may accept your offer if I can't finish the book during the check-out period, though.

Library ebook lending is kind of freaky. Each book is limited both to the number of copies the library can have, as well as the number of times the book can be checked out, supposedly to simulate the wear and tear on a physical book, at which point it is either discarded or replaced ... replaced means that the library has to pay for another license.

This is, of course, bullshit. The electrons don't wear out, and the real physical books last longer than the specified number of loans for an ebook ... but the publishers are all kinds of cranky over the new means of content provision and are trying to suck every penny out of it that they can.
jimhelm • Oct 14, 2011 9:45 am
I guess Roy didn't re-listen to his own work before recording the new book. He's using the Lord Varys' accent for Illirio the fat merchant, and Dany sounds like the Wildling that Bran and Rob captured.... forget her name.... but...still... He's the fucken best.

Happy Monkey • Oct 31, 2011 12:13 pm
I've been playing "A Game of Thrones: Genesis". It is definitely a unique take on real time strategy (RTS) gaming. It doesn't completely gel, but I give them points for trying something new.

It really plays up political intrique. The beginning of the game is all about sending out envoys, spies, and other diplomatic or underhanded units to build up as much support from the local lords as you can before war breaks out. At that point, you have to quickly raise armies, and it becomes a regular RTS.

Unfortunately, both phases are a bit slow, and not very polished. And the Westeros-history bookends around the missions can make it seem futile. You win a decisive victory, and then a blurb pops up saying that despite that victory your rebellion was quickly quashed.

This though, I dunno. I had the audiobooks and couldn't gel with them. I think I'd probably have liked the reader more had I not seen the tv series first.

I intend to get them in paperback. The high death count doesn't really put me off. I made it through the first two chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever. I have stamina :p

The death count isn't an issue other than all the main characters are being axed. Quite the opposite, the higher the better (Joe Abercrombie). I have not thought about Thomas Covenant in a very long time... I read only the first book, back in the mid 1980s.

The Game Of Thrones Begins On DVD March 6th
Finally, HBO has announced a release date and full specs for the set. Game of Thrones: The Complete First Season is set to arrive on Blu-ray, DVD, and digital download on March 6th from HBO Home Video.

As is typical with HBO releases, Game of Thrones is a bit pricey. The Blu-ray will list at $79.98, with the DVD version coming in at $59.99. On the up side, both the Blu-ray and DVD sets will be packing a nice array of bonus features. They're including features that will let fans explore not just the making of the show, but the history of the rich universe George R.R. Martin has created in his Song of Ice and Fire books. While the price point might still seem high for 13 episodes, I think the bonus content tips the scales in favor of a must-buy. And with it hitting a month before the show returns to HBO, you should have just enough time to get through the first-season set before returning to Westeros.

Here's the rundown: Link

I don't know, since we don't get HBO I usually don't have any awareness of when a show is originally broadcasting. But generally speaking, once the DVD is released to the public, it is soon available for rental as well. The major licensing issues are usually over whether Netflix is allowed to stream the data, or can only mail out physical copies (which forces them to buy more copies themselves, if they want to send it to enough people to keep them happy customers.) Currently they're not saying whether they'll stream it or not, but we'll get the discs if we have to.

I didn't connect that one of the guys in the very first scene was the guy "Iced" by Ned. Other than that, I think I was good. Since, I've read the first, and half of the second books.

Going to a friend's GOT party on Sunday. I hope to rewatch the entire first season before then.
Clodfobble • Mar 27, 2012 8:51 am
I thought it was funny that the three intro guys got full biographies in the Special Features section. They were non-entities, guys in red shirts who were just there long enough to die.

In general I was very impressed with the casting. Jon Snow was the only character at all who wasn't exactly like I'd pictured him.
Spexxvet • Mar 27, 2012 10:00 am
The ages are different. Book Robb is 14 IIRC, tv Robb looks 16 - 18. Book Bran is 8, tv Bran is 12. Or there abouts. Theon, on the other hand, is much older than Robb, in the book, but they are contemporaries on tv.

Warning: above ages are all from memory, and may not be accurate, when performing a reality check, fictionally speaking.
Spexxvet • Mar 27, 2012 10:02 am
Sansa is prepubescent in the book.
Clodfobble • Mar 27, 2012 11:15 am
I'm pretty sure George R.R. Martin wouldn't let them go changing ages willy-nilly, this is supposed to be the most true-to-the-book adaptation of any story, ever.

TV Robb may look older, but I think they're still claiming he's 14-15. He and Jon are supposed to be roughly the same age. Sansa is definitely 13 in both book and TV, though she is technically prepubescent as well since she hasn't menstruated yet (this being a key plot point over whether she can be married yet.) I remember thinking when reading the book that 13 was not impossible, but on the rare side, for not having her period yet.

TV Bran is declared to be 10 in episode 1, right before Jaime does his thing. Can't remember how old he's supposed to be in the book.

I did have it in my head that Rickon was supposed to be, like, a preschooler, but I think that's me misremembering, because it seems pretty shocking to have aged him up to 6 in the show if he wasn't that age in the book.

They had to make several of the characters older in the show so it wasn't kiddie porn.
jimhelm • Mar 27, 2012 11:39 am
I heard that they aged them all 3 years for the sake of propriety
Clodfobble • Mar 27, 2012 12:17 pm
AH HA!

One big departure from the books, however, is the "aging up" of some characters. It's one thing to read bedroom scenes about a young girl traded into marriage with a savage warlord but quite another to film it for the screen. Even by HBO standards.
...
Emilia Clarke, the actress who plays the young bride, Daenerys, is 23. Two of the actors -- Kit Harington as Jon Snow and Richard Madden as Robb Stark -- are 24 years old. Their characters in the book are 10 years younger.

Okay, but, the character in the TV show isn't supposed to be 23. Her older brother is hinted at being 17-19, making her 16-18.

The Stark sisters of Winterfell, Sansa and Arya are 11 and 9 in the first book. Actresses Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams are 13 and 14, respectively.

Wow, the actress who plays Arya is 14, older than the actress who plays Sansa? That's kind of nuts.
jimhelm • Mar 27, 2012 2:00 pm
Arya is one of my favorite characters, and the actress is my favorite. I think they hit my mental images mostly.

King Robert was a miss... He should have coal black hair and bright blue eyes.... an integral part of the story.... and Varys is Lex Luthor.... Jon Snow looks too pudgy and emo... He's supposed to have 'the look of the wolf about him' Oh, and I had Hodor with blond hair in my mind. But the rest... yeah.. pretty close all around.
Blueflare • Mar 27, 2012 2:46 pm
I'm pretty sure all the characters are two or three years older. In one scene with King Robert in the first season they referred to the overthrow of Aerys as being 17 years ago, whereas in the book they refer to it as being 14 years ago.
I agree they made them all a bit older so it wasn't so weird. Danaerys was born after King Aerys died, which makes her 14 in the books. But in the show she'd be more like 17.
DanaC • Mar 27, 2012 3:08 pm
Having not read the books first, I really loved the king. Thought he was great. One part dour Yorkshireman to two parts Henry the 8th.

You know that little girl had hardly done any acting before this? In fact I think it was her first role.

The first scenes with her, she looks so fragile. Almost translucent.

She's an amazing actor.
BigV • Apr 9, 2012 1:56 pm
I took my picture this weekend at Sakura-Con. She did look almost translucent, and now seeing that shot of the actual actress, I'd say the execution of her costume was excellent. She was very pretty and young and thin. I like the bunny ears too. It was Sakura-Con after all. Thanks. :)

The actress who plays Brienne is actually quite pretty. I remember when I first found out about the season 2 cast I was sceptical, because in the books she is described as ugly. But yeah, covered in filth and with a seriously bad haircut, she doesn't look as pretty as she actually is. :P She plays the role really well, anyway. Brienne is an awesome character.

Woah, just saw the most recent episode. Joffery is a real psychopath. I found that scene a little disturbing, mainly, I think, because he's so young. I don't know how old the actor is, but he's only mid-late teens... he does some great acting to really make the audience hate Joffrey.

The Blackwater episode did not disappoint!

Drunk Cersei was amusing, although depressing. I thought it was interesting to see that side of her, that you get to see a lot more of in the books. She's the villain, no doubt, but in that episode it was shown well that she is still a human being who has been through her share of shit just like anyone. It's possible to feel sympathy for her without liking her.
Awesome performance by Lena Headey. She is perfect for Cersei.

Sansa was cool in this ep as well, getting all snarky with Joffrey in front of his men. Haha. She has some very interesting character development in the books and it looks like the show is doing it well, too.

Listening to Sean Bean on the radio the other day.
Richard Bacon asked whether he was most recognised now for being in Game of Thrones; he replied that you are usually recognised for your most recent work. But then he laughed and admitted people will come up to him and say, "OMG! I love Game of Thrones, it's so brilliant, you're so cool, when do you start filming the next series?"

They all laughed.
Bean then enlightened me by adding, "What? Am I gonna tuck me head under me arm?"

Well, I finally got around to watching the second half of GoT s2.

I fell off it halfway through the series, as my head and heart just weren't with it. Too much other shit going on at the time.

So glad I went back to it. Really loved it. Peter Dinklage is wonderful, what an actor. Talk about screen presence. That man has it in spades.

Also, really love where Daenerys is going. Her character development has been one of the great joys of both series.

Can't wait for the next series. Now I really should go back and finish the second half of Homeland...and Being Human...and Dexter and a few others...

V: It's one of the best epic dramas I've seen in a very long time. I'd say it's the best fantasy drama but that would suggest it's good for a fantasy. I think it's great tv drama.

The pacing reminds me a little of I Claudius at times. It takes its time and plays out multiple connected storylines. Acting is very good and it has a real visual depth to it that's lovely to see. And it's occasionally very funny.

Just finished season one.

Question for season 2 watchers and those who read the book, I suppose.
Is this one of those sprawling greasy leviathans of a series that just goes on and on? Or is it going to come to a conclusion soon? Will it be like Cheers where we get to see Arya grow up, get married, have kids, become a grandmother, live to see electricity come to the north, then die peacefully on a farm surrounded by her entire family in a flashback scene while we cut to present day and see the great grandson listing the farm with a realtor and a young yuppie couple moves in and finds a dragon egg in the barn and the whole cycle is repeated?

Is that what's going to happen? Cause I'm just gonna read the plot summary on wikipedia if that's the case.
I see they've signed up for season 4. I'm probably right.
Happy Monkey • Apr 3, 2013 11:37 am

I don't think so. It does get rather complicated for awhile, but then players start to drop out (e.g. die,) or band together. Each of the Stark kids ends up on extremely different paths as they age. But IMO there's a distinct sense at the end of the most recent book that things are slowly drawing back together for a big conclusion. Don't read the plot summary; DO read the books if you've got the time. The show does a really excellent job so far, but there are always going to be nuances in the book that just can't be transferred to the screen. The books are definitely worth it.
footfootfoot • Apr 3, 2013 12:57 pm
I'll read the books.

Watched a few more episodes of season 2. I just watched the birth scene of the red lady.

This series is indeed a sprawling leviathan. The dragons were cute and cuddly enough, but that last bit was over the top.

How the fuck is this whole thing going to tie together short of total world annihilation culminating in a deluge, a dove, and some pimply teenager waking up from a dream?

Two wings up.

Nowhere near up to date, but I'd think the white walkers, dragons, that weird ghosty thing that leapt out of fire girl's quim, and a bunch of other stuff would need to be sorted out before the game of thrones was over. Sort of like Jumanji.
Happy Monkey • Apr 15, 2013 12:55 pm

footfootfoot • Apr 18, 2013 9:18 pm
Wow. And he's supposed to be very nice.

Here's a funny anecdote about Rose Leslie (Ygritte):
The only annoying part of the whole business, she says, is that fans tend to be disappointed by her delivery. “I use a different voice — I put on an accent on the show — so when I say ‘You know nothing, Jon Snow’ in my own voice you get a furrowed brow from fans and they’re like, ‘That doesn’t sound like Ygritte.’ And then I got to go into [her character's] accent and do it and it’s a really long boring process for the fan and I’m sure they walk away wishing they hadn’t asked me because it’s such a kerfuffle.”
There was one time, however, where the catchphrase was used in real life rather awesomely.
Leslie was in Northern Ireland, one of the five countries where the upcoming season of Thrones was shot. She was sitting in a restaurant with a friend, and having a tough time deciding what to order. “And I said to the waitress, ‘I don’t know what I’m going to go for,’ and the waitress jumped in with the line. It was very funny; it was perfect timing. I gave her a high five.”
Leslie considers. “Actually, I wanted to give her a high five, but it would have been incredibly lame if I did.”

But so what?
When I watch a movie I want them to present the story, which includes the actors dialog, body language, and action, as best they can. I really don't care if it was the actor, a stunt double, or special effects, that got the character from point A to point B. The fact that he got from A to B is the story line, and they conveyed that.

Sure, it's obvious the $50 million star didn't jump off the cliff, through the flames, into the shark infested waters, but the story character did, and that's the goal... telling the story. I didn't care that Jessica Rabbit wasn't real, she was hot, and told her part of the story.

It seems every movie coming out has a youtube video compiling "mistakes", put together by some nitpicker(s) who watched it frame by frame trying to find any little gotcha. What shallow lives they must lead, after completely losing the magic of the movies.

This.

I generally wait for a series to get a few eps in before I start watching. Can't bear the whole waiting a week thing. But this series in particular benefits from the marathon approach.

I've noticed this too, and I don't understand it. Doesn't HBO know that if there is pent up demand, and they don't offer a way to legally slake that thirst for non-subscribers, many people are gonna steal it?
jimhelm • May 9, 2013 9:10 am
They didn't even get season 2 out in time for Christmas last year. I got Season 1 the previous year... and it was on my list last year.... but no.
Happy Monkey • May 9, 2013 12:15 pm
Delaying DVDs increases the value of the HBO subscription, which is good for both HBO and the cable companies. I don't think any of them yet have the mindset to preempt piracy; just to try to punish it.
glatt • May 9, 2013 12:28 pm
it also decreases the value of the DVDs, because many people will have already seen it illegally.

Living in Oblivion was a huge cult hit with nearly everyone in the film industry. My buddies and I were all saying, "Yep, remember that time on..." "Oh God, that is SO true"

You've got to download it, you'll never find it.
Clodfobble • May 12, 2013 10:24 pm
Netflix has it, though I don't know what that means about its availability in the UK. Frankly I'm stunned I'd never heard of it before, but it's in our queue now. At first I thought you were referring to the horrible low-budget movie Oblivion. I don't recommend that one though, it's just genuinely bad.

I watch GOT last night. WTF? The show is just dragging out the story. Lots of scene changes with no fucking forward motion in the plot. Getting a bit annoyed.

I've also been filling-in with Downton Abbey. I am enjoying that. I like Elizabeth McGovern.

GRR Martin became over possessed and self important author after the popularity of the first three Ice and Fire books. Its too evident if you follow up the blogs or the news of related contents. Its not that his writing quality has declined. Even though he bores you to death with tapestry/food/sex descriptions in his latest "stand-still" books, the literature and writing style still never lags.
What I feel is that Martin has this title working wonders for him (and not un-deserving so), so he doesn't wanna his golden geese let go off that easily. I mean had the plot done enough is 'A Feast for Crows' and 'A Dance with Dragons', a prudent author could have rolled it up in next book. But no! Here is what Martin has to say (quoted from wiki):

"Three years from [2011] when I'm sitting on 1,800 pages of manuscript with no end in sight, who the hell knows".
Displeased with the provisional title A Time for Wolves for the final volume, Martin ultimately announced A Dream of Spring as the title for the seventh book in 2006. Martin is firm about ending the series with the seventh novel "until I decide not to be firm", leaving open the possibility of an eighth book to finish the series

Confused.
Is A Dance With Dragons another one split into two books?
I thought that was book three.
The narrative of A Feast for Crows (book four by my reckoning) finishes about three chapters before it looks like it should to include the crib sheets, and includes a promise to catch you up on the missing characters in the next book. I didn't know it was also a two-parter.

If I get Dreams and Dust, am I in the right place after A Feast for Crows? Then After the Feast? Making it another two books.

Seriously, numbering books shouldn't be this hard.
orthodoc • Jul 6, 2014 8:07 pm
In Pennsylvania I bought the five books so far available and A Dance With Dragons was the 5th book, after A Feast For Crows. Maybe the 5th book has been divided and published under different titles in the UK?
lumberjim • Jul 6, 2014 11:21 pm
He had to spilt the fifth book in two, and parts of it overlap the time line of the fourth book, but from different characters' perspectives.
Sundae • Aug 27, 2014 9:15 am
So I've finally got to see Season One.
It's good. I like. So glad I read the book first though, because of my usual issue with telling people apart. I'm not sure the Stark children and Theon Greyjoy were properly introduced. And they all look the same (to me).

The only thing that jars is the accents.
I know Peter Dinklage has won awards and all that, and I have no doubt about his abilities as an actor, but how come he talks like a bad Peter O'Toole impersonator when his siblings don't.
Ditto Bran. His accent does not match anyone around him, so it's not even as if he was brought up by a wet nurse or something.

Given my problem with faces I rely very much on the written and spoken word.
I'm not claiming to be an expert on accents, and in fact am a poor mimic, but when I hear something that sounds wrong to me it jars even more than continuity errors - which are actually something I enjoy from a pedantic perspective.

Oh and Jaime looks a little too like my brother for comfort. So I can't see him as eye candy. Boooooooo. But Cersai is exactly as I pictured her. As is Sansa. And because I saw the trailers for the series before I read the books, and they were Sean Bean heavy, I couldn't imagine another Ned Stark.

And the implied BJ was an unexpected treat

Haven't finished the series yet. But hey I know what happens, even if I can't remember exactly where it stops and the next one starts.
Got series two to watch too, then going to trade them in for future series.

Thanks Mum. Kept me out of trouble for two nights now.
(I'm not actually IN trouble of course. I just AM trouble)

I suppose a true film critic might say it was cheap emotional manipulation, but that episode made me feel more than anything I've seen since G'Kar/Londo scenes in Babylon 5 (and pooh to anyone who discounts G'Kar/Londo scenes on B5).

Not just the scene in question, but the sense of wonder from Danerys and Tyrion's perspective in the final scene. Those two scenes really worked together - wind you up tight, and then release the tension.

Happy Monkey • Jun 9, 2015 1:06 pm
They're not Romero-style zombies, like in Walking Dead, WWZ, and 28 X Later. Those are more like an environmental hazard than an enemy; wandering aimlessly and spreading like (and via) a plague.

These are more like the original Voodoo concept of a zombie - corpses raised for a deliberate purpose by necromancers. They are an enemy army, and fight with purpose.

They have little in common with the recent popular zombies other than appearance.

Hypothetically she's more authentic to the character from the book now, except HBO squeezed so much nudity out of her that every time she does the Hollywood move of holding on to the blanket my mind goes "wtf? that's so not like her..." only to then remember "oh right the actress renegotiated her deal", completely shattering the immersion. This is about as bad as if Sophie Turner decided she's an exhibitionist and demanded the exact opposite deal.

I mean, if she did have more nude scenes, I wouldn't close my eyes, but actually having a problem with an actress not being nude?

No.

So... Having main characters die horribly is cool and adds to the tension and empathy and overall immersion, but when you start to loose count on how many have died in one single episode...

Well - having fallen off for a while, I resumed where I had left off. Watched eps 5, 6 and 7 back to back. I like the way it's gathering pace.

I finally saw the season finale and while somewhat gratified by Cersei's comeuppance I was left feeling a) This show will still be going on when my grandchildren are in high school and no closer to any resolution, and b) it's not so much a finale as five new story lines.

I may wait until the very absolute last episode ever and then power disk through them all.

I'm not good with suspense.

I don't think that was as much comeuppance as it was revenge fuel.

Yea but then he'd be on the same side. Seen him fight for the white walkers would be interesting.

It might have been possible that she would learn some humility - if she hadn't been immediately given an undead giant. Any bit of her that wasn't already plotting revenge would have been after that.

Undead. That explains the silence and the bulging eyes with blue lids. My first thought was, "Aren't all the Cleganes dead?"

classicman, I read about a week ago that the final season (8th) will only have 6 eps! I foresee a BLOODBATH. Blood on the ceilings, entrails hanging from the chandeliers, I mean it's gonna look like all the Rambo movies, most of the really old pre-LOTR Peter Jackson movies, all the Living Dead movies, and Dead Snow threw a party. And then someone invited Smaug, Vermithrax, Tiamat, the big bull dragon from Reign of Fire, Jörmungandr, and every scaly nightmare I can't pronounce from assorted Asiatic mythos to said party.

I hope :D.
Snakeadelic • Aug 14, 2016 9:24 am
One thing really puzzles me, tho...

Ppl LOVE GoT. Like, "should this fictional character be calling the cops about stalkers and creepers" love.

Ppl LOVE LotR the same way.

We already know we can't have Dragonriders of Pern, which sucks now that CGI could do what Michael Whelan did for the paperbacks (which he obviously DID read before painting the covers). Rendered as they were described in the books and painted by Mr. Whelan, they'd be freakin' spectacular.

...And we already know there are a zillion or so LotR knockoffs out there. Why has no one optioned the ripped-off but extensive and detail-rich Memory, Sorrow & Thorn trilogy by Tad Williams? The Dragonbone Chair. The Stone of Farewell. To Green Angel Tower (which is so thick they had to break the paperback release into 2 books). The swords alone! One forged from a meteor, one grown by forcing iron and iron-allergic "witchwood" to cooperate. Forget how they got the third as it's been a while since I could read anything longer than a magazine article :(. There are elves (Sithi). There are nightmare swamp bugs. There are prophecies and royal lines of descent. There are even dwarves of a sort (short tribes based on Arctic aboriginals like the Inuit and Tlingit) who ride bighorn rams! Hell, Whelan did the cover art on the hardback trio! Someone get on this...it would easily make a minimum 2-season epic!
So... Having main characters die horribly is cool and adds to the tension and empathy and overall immersion, but when you start to loose count on how many have died in one single episode...

Has anyone else noticed that major character deaths almost always seem to happen in the second-to-last episode of most of the seasons so far?
Snakeadelic • Aug 14, 2016 9:30 am
I've been waiting since around about the Red Wedding to see Arya start taking revenge. I still want to see her rip off a fake face, smile, and then nail Cercei's head to a wall with Needle.

Anyone else think she and the also-not-dead other Clegane are going to end up reunited so he can watch her back while she murders her way through her list? :D

They are great pair, I would love to see them together again.
Snakeadelic • Aug 15, 2016 8:57 am
Also:

Any thoughts on just how many major characters are actually Rhaegar Targaryan's kids? We know Dany is his sister, and now we have been STRONGLY led to think Jon Snow is his son with Ned's sister. What about Tyrion? I've seen illustrated fan theories about how Tywin spoke to him without using pronouns like "my" in front of words like "son". I haven't read the books but I have heard there are clues in them that Rhaegar REALLY got around, and if Tyrion is half Targaryen that would definitely explain Tywin's hatred and contempt for him. Also, apparently the books describe him as having one eye green and the other violet, with violet eyes being the hallmark of the Targaryen line. Targaryen blood might explain why Viserion and Rhaegal didn't fry Tyrion when he took off their collars...

And how about that "ice dragon in/under/IS the Wall" theory? Will the Song of Ice and Fire end up being a battle saga about Dany vs. Jon Snow, or maybe Dany's dragons and the ice dragon ganging up on the Walker/Wight army when it kinda looks like everyone's gonna hit Kings Landing at about the same time?

One of my favorite fanarts of those two is done in Calvin & Hobbes style, the two of them crossing a stream using a log. Way too adorable for how nasty they can both be! ;)

Arya left Clegane to die in agony. I don't see them breaking bread together anytime soon.
However, there is a young man whom we haven't seen for some time. He used to be an accomplished blacksmith and escaped from the Red witch with the help of Davos. I'm hoping he makes a return - possible with Arya since they were friends/love interests. That would finally unite the Baratheon and Stark families creating a massive powerhouse.

A few tidbits from reports from shooting locales:

At least one scene where Jon Snow and Daenerys are face-to-face.

On the same set, all in frame with Jon & Dany: Tyrion, Varis, possibly Davos, and Missandei.

Also, a quote from an entertainment blog: Plot Leaked – Daenerys, Jon Snow, and Cersei Join Hands to Fight White Walkers

OMG I can't wait to see how THAT mess pans out. Cersei is NOT a team player, is particularly un-thrilled about being around other beautiful women, and has so many reasons to hate Dany's whole family. As much reason as she's got to despise Jon and Dany alike, it's gonna get CRAZY frisky if Tyrion comes back to King's Landing wearing The Hand of the Queen!

Snakeadelic • Dec 29, 2016 8:45 am
We plan to start binge-watching the first 5 seasons (and buy the 6th) here pretty soon, since we still have like 4 months to wait and that's IF it airs when they say it's gonna start, in April.

foot, if you were to be matched up with any female GoT character based on that qualification, I'd say grown-up Arya. (We forget that while the character is still a kid, Maisie Williams is like 19 now...) That's gonna be one character who knows crazy inside and out! She may act calm even when cutting an enemy's throat after feeding them their children in a pie, but a girl who can act calm isn't always calm on the inside.

I remain stalwart in my hope that Arya gets to murder Cersei someday. With 'The Rains of Castamere' playing live because Cercei thinks she has the upper hand.

Also...anyone else wanna see Cersei and Jamie both if Tyrion comes back riding a DRAGON? "Please don't eat the help" indeed!

Was gonna grab Season 6 with Amazon gift cards but got distracted by other shiny things (Ant-Man, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Age of Ultron to catch us up on MCU movies on DVD, plus Big Trouble because it's the funniest thing ever to happen anywhere NEAR Tim Allen). Will have to use other gift cards--my family finally realized the easiest way to gift shop for the weirdo kid is send me gift cards & let me sort it out--for Season 6. And my sweetie got the 5-book paperback set, so if I ever get to where I can read something longer than a forum post without my brain wandering off, I might even read the damn books.

I thought it was a good ending, but they had trouble earlier in the season getting to it in a satisfying way.

Which, I gather, is something GRRM is having trouble with as well.
lumberjim • May 21, 2019 10:44 am
I thought the last 3 episodes were lame. Arya sailing west came out of nowhere, the dragon just flying away, grey worm turning into a dick head, Dani becoming a tyrant for no reason..... Just like hm says.

I've read the ending left some ppl a little bit WTF?...
lumberjim • May 21, 2019 2:00 pm
Martin remains as resolute as ever: His ending is coming. In a post published on his blog Monday, he assured readers that work continues on The Winds of Winter, though he knows better than to set a deadline. And he noted how different his conclusion would be from that of the show, which only “had six hours for this final season. I expect these last two books of mine will fill 3,000 manuscript pages between them before I’m done.” He mentioned characters from his books who never even got introduced on-screen, and the resulting “butterfly effect” that would set his ending apart.

I liked the ending for John Snow and Sansa. The North remains free. Dani was a tyrant in the making from day one but I don’t know if that’s more obvious in the books? It’s always a flip of the coin and John was the good side. They wasted the Bran story line but at least he can reach out to the dragon and cause trouble down the road. Arya got a poor finish.
lumberjim • May 22, 2019 12:40 pm
yeah, why didn't Bran Warg the dragon and put a stop to the razing of Kings Landing?
Griff • May 22, 2019 6:16 pm
I think up until the crowning Bran was supposed to be an observer of all things but that seems weak.
lumberjim • May 22, 2019 7:37 pm
Yeah, he's the character you start the story following, if I recall. Made sense that he'd be king, but he should have had some part in the battles.

They abbreviated it so badly. The pin prick death of the winter king and that entire conflict was bologna, and the battle at kings landing made no sense on several levels.

Did you notice Aaron Rogers' cameo? And see him trash the finale?

It's the perfect setup for the spinoff. It'll be Arya's madcap adventures traveling around the Western Sea, bopping from island to island, like The Enterprise or Jupiter 2 bopping from planet to planet, meeting new whacky cultures/peoples/species every week.
Happy Monkey • May 23, 2019 6:52 pm
She's basically following the example of her childhood hero Nymeria.

Plus, maybe the faceless men aren't as accepting of her defection as it seemed, and she's putting a few miles between them.
