Odometer Poker

Gravdigr • Nov 4, 2010 4:42 pm
OK, everybody's played dollar bill poker, where you use the serial number on a bill to make a poker hand. Same thing. Almost everyone now has a car that has a seven digit odometer. Take those seven digits, and build a five card poker hand.

For example: Your odometer reads 157,556.5 miles, you have four fives. 144,449.4 miles, and you have five fours. 259,299.1, you have a full house, 9's over 2's. For the purposes of this contest, five zeros would beat four nines. Of course, there are no face cards, aces, or jokers. Nothing wild. We're playing stud, cuz, that's how I roll.

You have until Sunday, Nov. 7 at 11:59:59pm to post a picture of your odometer poker hand (a pic of your odometer). Maybe this will keep someone from building a ringer hand.

The winner will have the privilege of saying "Yay, I won!"

ETA: In the unlikely event of an unbreakable tie, the Dwellar with the best cleavage wins.

Luckily, might odometer keeps mileage alphabetically. Right now I'm at AAAAA
Rhianne • Nov 5, 2010 12:10 pm
My odometer only 'deals' me six numbers.
Gravdigr • Nov 5, 2010 2:13 pm
You only need five...seven is just the number of cards. You just won't have as many cards to choose from.

Also, if you have a bike, motorcycle, four-wheeler or anything else with an odometer (of at least five digits), that'll work also.

Anyone cheats, and I will fart in your exact direction.

BigV • Nov 5, 2010 2:34 pm
I'm in.

Four of a kind.
glatt • Nov 5, 2010 2:38 pm
Can we bluff? How does that work? Cause I've got a 7 card straight.
Gravdigr • Nov 5, 2010 2:42 pm
I don't know how you'd bluff in this case.

And those 7's look pretty strong...

ETA: No use posting if you can't beat four sevens.
Sundae • Nov 5, 2010 2:49 pm
I don't understand this at all.
And the only poker I know how to play is Strip Poker, which is effectively Pontoon anyway. And the only real rule is to pretend you are embarrassed and don't want to take your clothes off so the man you are playing with thinks he is getting away with something, when really you're after the same thing.

BUT.
I will take a photo of Dad's mileage.
And as I am completely clueless you'll have to tell me if I should get him to drive around a bit more.
Because you're so clever and I'm so silly and I really don't want to lose at this you know (innocent look, removing socks)

You can strip. In fact, please do.

Just remember to take pictures of your hand...and anything else you uncover!

Thanks for that Gravdigr. Like Sundae Girl I don't have much idea about poker so perhaps someone will help me here - I think I have a 'straight' and since I've decided they're all hearts that would be a 'straight flush'?.

4-5-6-7-8

Well, we don't got no suits, so a straight it is. Good hand, but, four sevens have it so far.

I'd say for the sake of the game, since we don't have suits, that a straight flush would have to be 5 consecutive numbers. e.g 23456 would be a straight flush, and 32645 would be an ordinary straight. It wouldn't work for regular straight though, I guess that's still out.

Hardly anyone banks cord blood. Just a few a year where I work. About the same number that have their heads cryogenically frozen.

That would be because it's a 5-speed, the other dodge vehicles we have had were automatics and were nothing but trouble.

Popdigr bought Grand Cherokee One showing 125k miles, so, only 100k, or so, are ours. Outside of rebuilding the transmission, and replacing the water pump, it's been solid as a rock! Pamela • Feb 22, 2014 11:36 pm
That is very important information.

Today I learned...that my truck doesn't go lower than 31 gallons indicated. However, sloshing fuel will change the reading lower. I have a 165 gallon capacity and I put in 158 gallons. I was beyond fumes and was only running on prayers. $708 bill. Ouch. Note to self, try to avoid buying diesel in New York in future.

Gravdigr • Mar 6, 2014 12:53 pm
Nice catch, but, that's a weird pic. The odo/tripmeter numbers are legible, as are the needles for tach/speedo...But the numbers for the tach/speedo, and the numbers/letters, as well as the needles, for temp & fuel gauges are double vision territory.

Kinda weird.
footfootfoot • Mar 6, 2014 2:59 pm
that is weird how they are sharp.
lumberjim • Mar 6, 2014 3:03 pm
Reverse doppler effect
Clodfobble • Mar 6, 2014 5:26 pm
I bet the camera twisted clockwise/counterclockwise rather than sliding laterally. It's like those time lapse star photos where the stars on the outside make long curved lines, but the one star in the center of the photo looks pretty much just like a dot.
BigV • Mar 7, 2014 10:23 am
The camera bumped up/down during the exposure. All the elements are doubled, it's just a lot easier to see in areas of high contrast. Even the odometer readout.
glatt • Mar 7, 2014 10:31 am
The double images are more pronounced at the top of the image than at the bottom, so I think instead of a bump, it was a pivot/tilt. The lower half of the image stayed in the same area of the frame and remained sharp, but as the camera tilted upward, the upper part of the image got that double image motion blur.

Easier for me to visualize than explain, but basically the pivot point was the lower half of the image, so it stayed sharper there.
footfootfoot • Mar 7, 2014 12:18 pm
I'm going to go with the Glattfobble explanation.
infinite monkey • Mar 7, 2014 1:20 pm
Huh? Isn't the double image just the reflection of the gauges on the piece of plastic that covers the gauges? and it angles. so...

or have i just gone stupid? is there really some sort of complex sci-fi explanation? or are most of you stoned and feeling really smart?

Infi, I'm sure that you are many things...I'm equally sure that stupid is not one of those things.

But, I'm going with the Glattsplanation. An up/down jiggle would produce the effect we're seeing, and would not be as pronounced in the vertical plane (explaining the more focused gauge needles, somewhat).
xoxoxoBruce • Mar 7, 2014 5:59 pm

Yes, I am many things. I'm a mosaic of madness. A conglomeration of crazy. A diorama of dementia.

But anyway. The more focused gauge needles are because the needles are closer to the aforementioned reflective plastic that is causing the doubly images in the picture.

Oh never mind, I'm sure it's way more difficult than I'm making it. ;)

Wow; even more of a coincidence, then. If it were fractional seconds of the 13:13 clock, it could have been found by going frame by frame (with a bit of luck). As a separate timer, there's no guarantee that it will line up like that.
