July 28, 2010: Tucson's Recycled Critters

Nick Georgiou makes critters from recycled paper that are, um... different.
And rather than keep them cooped up in a stuffy gallery, he likes to take them on outings, to interact with the public and photograph people's reactions.

“I get a lot of double takes, some people stopping me even before I position the piece. Most people have mixed expressions, curiosity morphing into familiarity. At first, they aren’t sure what to make of it. Moving in for a closer look, most smile and say something like, ‘Is this made from newspaper?’ or ‘This is a book!’”

Sounds like fun. :D

Why is it that when I have done stuff like that in the past all I get is like, "Don't leave that on the coffee table," "Can't you make something nice?" or "You didn't get any glue on the carpet did you, we'll never get our security deposit back!"

I think they're gorgeous!
Despite the fact that I'm usually concerned about inanimate objects coming to life and trying to kill me, I get a good vibe from these critters.

SG, you get that good vibe because, if they do come after you, you just have to grab a lighter or matches and they're toast(ed). ;)
