The New Improved Commute Thread: Video Edition

This is not my normal route. I usually go west on 23 to Morgantown, and take the Turnpike from there. Yesterday was the 5th, and there was no traffic, so I took the route I normally take home at night instead. I usually go this way on Saturday mornings....it's a much prettier ride, too.

Main St to Brick Rd. Left on Rte 401 East to Rte 100. Turn right, 100 South to the new Eagle bypass road, back onto 100S to Turnpike entrance. East on 276 PA Turnpike to Valley Forge exit, stay left and take 76 East (The dreaded Schyulkill Expressway) Merging with Rte 1 City Ave/Roosevelt Expwy. 3 miles to center city Philadelphia, exit left to rte 676, under center city, take exit for the Ben Franklin Bridge. Admiral Wilson Blvd (30 east) to rte 38 E. After the light by the Cherry Hill Mall, parking in (formerly) Buca Di Beppo's parking lot on the right.

You're right, it's a very pretty drive. I forget how rural you guys actually are.
glatt • Jul 6, 2010 8:45 am
That's a long commute. You and the rest of the traffic drive extremely fast. Amazing how you can stop on a dime at those speeds.

You drive too fast.

I don't recall seeing a single bicyclist either ;)

Bicyclists are flat, and part of the pavement.

some kind of Sony Handycam. you can see it in a couple of these Cabo pics

I stuck it to the dash with double sided mounting tape
Cloud • Jul 6, 2010 5:02 pm
wow, you sure do live out in the sticks, doncha? I think there are more trees in the video than there are in my entire state.
lumberjim • Jul 6, 2010 5:40 pm
I like trees when they're not falling on jinx's car
Cloud • Jul 6, 2010 5:43 pm
kinda how I like fireworks.
skysidhe • Jul 6, 2010 5:52 pm
I love trees. From what I can tell it's beautiful.

Ya. And yet it's only 20 minutes down the Turnpike to the largest shopping mall in the country(in terms of retail space, not roller coaster space).
HungLikeJesus • Jul 6, 2010 11:00 pm
I was just thinking, if you left a few minutes earlier you wouldn't have to go so fast.
Tulip • Jul 7, 2010 12:02 am
Seems like a very long ride to work. How many minutes is it though?
lookout123 • Jul 7, 2010 2:31 am
Very cool. How do you speed it up like that?

that morning it was 55 minutes. Normally, I allow 100 minutes. I usually get there on time.

Outstanding - thanks so much for that.
I was so surprised when a city hove into view after all that greenery!
In Philip Larkin's "Here" (he wrote great journey poems) there's a line "Gathers to the surprise of a large town" - which it certainly did.

Am completely baffled by American road terms - freeway, expressway, turnpike etc - but am happy to be. I don't mind them being foreign.

The start of the drive reminded me of home. The woods and the hills are very close to my local geography. But you could not drive for so long without driving through villages or hitting a substantial town. I forget how much space y'll have out there. Even in Wales or Scotland (less densely populated) the roads are laid out to CONNECT towns and villages, so they're strung like pearls across your route.

You've increased my ambition to visit.
But apart from that, thanks for posting!
Gravdigr • Jul 7, 2010 6:00 am
I don't catch that many green lights in a frigging month!:mad2:
Sundae • Jul 7, 2010 6:01 am
Traffic Light Karma, Gravdigr.
Sorry, but you obviously did something awful in a previous life.
Gravdigr • Jul 7, 2010 6:01 am
This is a stop sign, and you di'in't. I'm telling.
Pete Zicato • Jul 7, 2010 10:53 am
You took off kind of fast, man. We didn't even have time to wave goodbye to jinx and the kids.

Seriously, though. You have my sympathy on that commute. I think there's some online universities that do podcasts. You should think about doing that. You could have your Phd by Christmas.

I haven't done the video yet, but this tumbleweed jumped out in front of me today.
xoxoxoBruce • Jul 8, 2010 11:57 pm
You sure that wasn't a wetback in disguise?
lookout123 • Jul 9, 2010 1:12 am
Pretty sure. They don't hide.

Nope, just a plain ol' FJ Cruiser. We see tumbleweed all the time, but that was a pretty big one so I thought it was worthy of a pic before I went around it.

It is pretty funny watching people new to the desert swerve around before slamming into them. After awhile you learn to drive right at it because it will be gone by the time you get there.

and, he lives in the more populated parts. Way Out West, where I live, there's a real whole lot of nothing. It's 42 miles/68 kilometers to the next major metropolitan area of any size, and the next one after that is 226 miles/364 km to the next city. Nothing but scrub, rock, and jackrabbits. Tumbleweeds aplenty, but not too many trees!

What happens if you do hit one? It seems like a pile of sticks to me.... Doesn't it just get pulverized?

I was trying not to start a new thread. I knew we'd had this before.
This thread will do as well as any of the others.
And it was started by Jim Helm in a previous incarnation, so maybe that will draw people in.

Just a clip.
Whenever it's dry underfoot, I cut through St James' churchyard.
It's definitely quicker than walking around, and sets me up for the day as it's an oasis of calm away from the main road.

Yere tis:

I kept waiting for a tall figure with a cloak and a scythe to jump out from behind one of the trees.

PS I think that that's called the photic sneeze response.

It is - my Dad and bro have it too.
But mine is the most sensitive of course.
Bullitt • May 22, 2011 1:42 pm
Nothing special about mine these days. No more Wyoming mountains, just 5 minutes of Ohio suburb then 20 minutes of I-77 south to good ol Rubber City USA (Akron).
plthijinx • May 22, 2011 9:50 pm

Normally, the rear of the train is blocked off by a locked door. This morning, it was available, and I found myself right next to the rear window. So I took a time lapse movie of my commute. It gets shaky at the end when I stop clamping the phone to the window and carry it in my hand as I exit the station.

Two things:

1. Thanks for the warning. I would've thought I was having a stroke!

2. That entire post is bullshit. You were not in a subway tunnel. Everyone knows subway tunnels are filled with homeless people, gang members and spies. I did not see a single homeless people, gang member, or spy. Not even a hobo. Bullshit I tells ya.

That looks like it should be chopped up and spliced into a music video.

Oh, and... Ballston?

... Cock!

It's amazing the quality a damn phone can give you these days. And mine is an old 5s, like 2 generations old.
