It's the quintessential American car: loud, brute force, fast as all hell, named after a warship, uses far too much fuel, generates only 69 HP per liter, breaks down every 100 miles.

So at the annual gathering of Corvettes in Carlisle, PA, they take as many Corvettes as they can, and they make the flag. This one is from last year; this year, in August, they intend to make an even bigger one...

54 Corvettes bigger, for a total of 158 Corvettes – 57 red, 51 white, 35 blue and 15 silver. Half of the event registration fee for all of the 158 Corvettes participating will be donated to Homes for Our Troops, a national non-profit organization, committed to helping those who have selflessly given to their country and have returned home with serious disabilities and injuries.

Are those balloons on the blue Corvettes pretending to be stars?

Where are the cars that are counted but not in the picture?

Probably up on flatbeds, headed to the garage.

Curious why one of the white cars had its door open when the photo was taken.

Well, yes on the 69 HP per liter displacement - but that is only true for SOME Corvettes:

The results are in from the 2009 ZR1's SAE certification: the 376 cubic inch supercharged LS9 V-8 makes 638 hp and 604 lb-ft of torque.

That's 169 HP per liter, and sports cars are SUPPOSED to use up a lot of fuel. :eyebrow:

By next year, I'll be running mine on "sea water" from the Gulf of Mexico. :D

Actually it's 6.2 liter so it produces an excellent 100 hp per liter. Very efficient for an eight-banger.

Depends on the specific model. This one IS 376 cubic inches:

That is pretty efficient. Of course there are normally aspirated Porsches making 118 hp/L, so I suppose it's all relative. (2010 GT3 RS makes 450 hp from 3.8 liters). But you can't make a huge American flag using German cars, that just doesn't work. :D

Gosh, 450 hp for only twice the money.

I have *numerous* pictures taken while driving on that bridge. Most of them in motion as well, though to be honest, this one was taken while still in first gear. See them giant brakelights?

Mt Rainier is especially fetching from this stretch of floating roadway.
