night photography

My walk home from the studio is about 600' of trail / road, without any traffic ever, and fairly minimal light pollution. When the moon isn't up, I use a headlamp -- when the moon is up, I tend to see a lot more shooting stars.

Took a little while to sit in the road and take photos tonight. ISO100, f2.0, 50 and 60s exposure.

awesome. thanks!

What LJ said. The mood is very intriguing

How did you compensate for motions of stars and the moon ?
gvidas • Jul 3, 2010 10:44 am
Thanks, guys.

I didn't compensate at all. Just a point and shoot camera sitting on the ground, propped up on the lens cap.

I think that there's less-visible star motion in some parts of the photos because I was taking them mostly to the north west, north, and northeast. From what I remember of astronomy, the perceivable rotation of the earth is less when you're looking at something along the axis, i.e. the north star.

I'm impressed... for 50 or 60 sec exposures, you are very steady !

Beautiful!
What are those sideways hammock looking thingies?

Beautiful. Nice job.

Lovely. I miss the same kind of walks home from the studio. I used a head lamp book light usually. I do miss the solitary walks and all the stars! Thank you for posting this.

I'm wondering, too, what those tripod-ish thing-a-ma-bobs are.

ETA: Nice pics. (I wish I could do more than eight-second exposures w/my camera.)

Nice clear views of Ursa Major and Cassiopeia!

That's a tricky question. On my end, I'm trying to figure out how best to live with myself. Lately the result has been a handful of painted doodles (doodling with paint: pushing paint for its own sake.)

That's a nice walk home from a studio.
Cicero • Jul 4, 2010 3:51 pm
I love this gvidas. I used to have a brief walk from our studio at night. I miss the stars and the intoxication of raw creativity, privacy, and directly confronting the night sky on the brief
walk home. Thank you for posting a similar experience.

Enjoyed the link. I'm partial to helices
Can't help wondering how multiple artists come to agreement on a project !

I'm pretty into the whole idea of collaborations, because you're sort of passing up your own ego for the sake of finding something new. There's a fine balance there, and it's closely related to the broader issue of originality vs. sincerity.

But that's a pet topic.

g, is there a red-balloon boogeyman stalking around your night?
glatt • Jul 11, 2010 7:59 am
what's going on with the front end of that truck?
xoxoxoBruce • Jul 11, 2010 10:50 am
It's parked behind the pot plants.
gvidas • Jul 11, 2010 12:57 pm
no, that's another sculpture. This is definitely an odd landscape to walk around in, in terms of boogeymanish shapes and shadows.

And yeah, thar be plants.

Looks like, left to right, Norfolk, Richmond, DC, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York.
classicman • Jul 18, 2012 11:33 pm
Yup - the East Coast.

NASA has released a dazzling picture from the International Space Station showing the Atlantic coast from Virginia to New York at a view of about 220 miles above Earth.

The bright spots indicate large cities; New York City and Long Island are visible in the right side of the image, while Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, D.C., Richmond, Va. and Virginia Beach are visible as you move south, or to the left of the photo.
glatt • Jul 19, 2012 8:33 am
I've been there.

Dara seems to be a bot, or has a very similar life to Arthur Dent (I think) in Elspodes' signature.

Just took this picture of moonrise from my front porch. The previous exposures have the utility lines crossing the face of the moon. This was the first one to rise above them from my point of view.

I would have thought a longer exposure than 1/20th of a sec.

Kool pic.
glatt • Aug 4, 2012 7:31 pm
Remember, it's a beautiful bright sunny day on the moon. The night is dark, but the moon is bright.
