I had my sleep study back in '99. And I have had a C-pap ever since. It changed my life.

I plan to sleep through it. I finally talked jinx into letting me go to the doctor. Had blood taken this morning also. just to see if I'm dying.

gonna be 40 soon, so I finally caved and went to the doctor.
Trilby • Jun 15, 2010 5:05 pm
Are you feeling poorly?
lumberjim • Jun 15, 2010 5:50 pm
not really. I get sleepy sometimes in the afternoon. jinx says I choke in my sleep sometimes, and supposedly, i snore. (yeah right)

and monster's thread got us thinking about that other stuff.
Trilby • Jun 15, 2010 5:54 pm
well, you DO work about 100 hours a day...
monster • Jun 15, 2010 9:08 pm
right. I'm sleepy in the afternoons too. And the mornings. And especially the eveningzzzz zzz zz...zwhu..WHAT? I am paying attention, it was just a long blink.

Did you check your neck for finger marks the next morning?
monster • Jun 15, 2010 11:23 pm
 beest beats me up in the night. And steals the duvet. And snores, but I like that bit -it's gentle and comforting. It's quiet when we're apart :(
xoxoxoBruce • Jun 15, 2010 11:26 pm
Nothing like gluing on a zillion electrodes, hooking up a wiring harness fit for the space shuttle, and sticking you in a hospital bed, to check you're normal sleep patterns.
lumberjim • Jun 15, 2010 11:30 pm
i just want the fucken cpap thing paid for by Aetna. if i have to snore for some mooks in lab coats to get one, I'll do it!
lumberjim • Jun 15, 2010 11:31 pm
I guess I should smoke a cigar and drink some Rum before I go there, so that I snore my best snores for them.
monster • Jun 15, 2010 11:40 pm
not all snoring is bad. The choking thing is not so good....

spudcon • Jun 16, 2010 2:21 pm
I was using a CPap. When I finally got it working well, they gave me some medication that damn near killed me. Haven't used it since.
classicman • Jun 16, 2010 2:35 pm
Go to a Goodwill store or someplace and buy some really strange clothes, bing some stuffed animals/toys to sleep with ... just thinkin here.
Clodfobble • Jun 16, 2010 2:41 pm
Just insist that you have to sleep naked.

Except be all squeamish about it. "Eee, don't look at my nipples!"
squirell nutkin • Jun 16, 2010 4:31 pm
I'm leaving for my sleep study in a few hours. Freakishly, I'm hoping it's apnea. That would explain a lot.

They explicitly told me I can't sleep naked. They didn't say anythign about a ballerina costume, however. You might try that LJ.
classicman • Jun 16, 2010 4:57 pm
Good luck SN! LJ+ballerina costume - lol

Insist on keeping a Bowie knife under your pillow and be sure to scream "Die mutha fukka!" at the moment you wake up.

Mine's tonight too!

How weird is that
Griff • Jun 16, 2010 5:18 pm
Nothing is weird in 2010. What two grown men do wired up in bed while being observed is their own business.

if we're both wired up at the same time, there is a chance that I can hack into foot's brain and change my grades to all As!

Or maybe I'll just put a zombie warning up.

it SUCKED

i got a fucking TOOTHACHE in the middle of the night!

and the mattress was terrible. I couldn't lie on my back for more than 5 minutes without my lower back screaming at me.

the tech gave no indication of how it went. I'm kind of bummed
Spexxvet • Jun 17, 2010 8:19 am
Meh. If it had been bad, they would have slapped a CPAP on you right away.
lumberjim • Jun 17, 2010 8:24 am
I'm saying that this night's sleep was not my normal night's sleep, and therefore not indicative of what I typically do in my sleep. My concern is that they will see no need for the cpap. I'd rather not have to repeat this experience. They had no advil for my toothache.....wtf?... Fuckers didn't even have a water cooler to get a drink at. Next time, if there is one, I'll bring a cooler and a six pack.

I'm pretty sure if you need a CPAP it'll show whether your sleep is atypical or not. I'd just never get to sleep in those conditions. How ridiculous. I assumed they'd try to make you as comfortable as possible, but doesn't sound like it.

Now do you have to go and get that tooth checked out?
lumberjim • Jun 17, 2010 10:09 am
i was just at the dentist and got good marks! I think it might be a sinus thing, actually. fucking hurt, and now it's fine. I'm baffled.
squirell nutkin • Jun 17, 2010 10:13 am
I just woke up from my post sleep study nap. Show up at 8:30pm, get wired up till 9:00, go to sleep at 9:30 (HA!)
Bed was ok, pillows were weird, wish I had brought mine.
9:31 fucking GODDAMN restless leg.
Awake all night it seemed, which was typical. I usually drop off to something approaching rest at about 4:00am.
5:00am WAKE UP CALL!
Here's your hat; what's your hurry? I did get a complimentary cup of tea or coffee, and a bottle of water the night before. The room was so dry, my eyes were glued shut.

The tech told me I snored and woke up a lot. She wasn't allowed to tell me if I stopped breathing (WTF?) MY wife said it was because most people would freak out. I know a couple of times I must have stopped because I remember waking up feeling a little adrenalin rush.

We'll see next week.

The glue was a bitch getting out of my hair. I think there is still some there.
lumberjim • Jun 17, 2010 10:49 am
yeah.... that sucks. I just got a high and tight right before i went, but i'm still scraping it out of the stubble. ick!

where's your pic?
jinx • Jun 17, 2010 11:05 am
So what happens next?
squirell nutkin • Jun 17, 2010 11:11 am
I forgot to bring my camera! D'oh. They took one of me with a mirror, ostensibly so the doc could see my fat neck.

They told me in a week my PCP would have the results and if I needed a cpap, they'd schedule another sleep study to calibrate the machine.

WTF do they do about restless leg? The tech told me that sometimes they can't tell if it was the leg that woke me up or the apnea. I guess they flip a coin.
lumberjim • Jun 17, 2010 11:11 am
They give the report to a Doctor, and he reviews it with my doctor, ....or something.

edit: Oh and I'm pretty sure it was Piker that battled the mole, he has a lil' boo-boo on his lip.
lumberjim • Jun 17, 2010 11:20 am
i asked him to just prescribe the thing when I went. He said they had to do this study so they could decide what kind, and then to fit it. The tech said something about having to go back for another study unless he observed me stopping breathing multiple times and could put one on me last night....which didn't happen. bleh

So I'm still waiting to read the report but a nurse called me and said that I only stopped breathing a little and don't need a cpap machine. IF I want to take fistfuls of pharmaceuticals for my restless legs then they will hook me up. They think I should lose some weight.

I probably only stopped breathing only a little since I never really fell asleep and that night was the first time in several months or longer that I had restless leg.

I'm skeptical.
HungLikeJesus • Jun 23, 2010 7:53 pm
When you're asleep, that's when the "aliens" re-program you, do maintenance, uploads, downloads, that kind of thing. When you don't sleep for a few days your brain files get all corrupted and loose their indexing. That's when things can get ugly - you might forget to breathe, your heart might not remember to beat, and other bodily functions start to fail.

monster • Jun 23, 2010 9:41 pm
don't be so skeptical. Would be my take on it. If you really didn't sleep at all they'd tell you and have you go back. It's vey rare people don't sleep, but it's not unusual to feel you didn't. I just chaperoned a camp where all of the other chaperones and kids claimed not to have slept, but I was awake late and know they all did. I too felt like I didn't sleep, but I guess I slept in the early hours, once they'd all woken up and couldn't get back to sleep....
lumberjim • Jun 23, 2010 10:05 pm
Sunday I had smoked a cigar, and drank a good bit of beer, was out in the sun playing horseshoes ....and ate a lot too. When I asked her the next night, Jinx said I snored worse than usual. Monday morning I woke up tired, and was groggy all day. Literally nodding at my desk. If you had asked me, I'd have said I slept through the night. Had a long day, got home late, and had to go back in.... Tuesday was better, but not normal. I slept until 9 am this morning, and could have slept until noon.

I need to lose some weight
monster • Jun 23, 2010 11:06 pm
It seems to me that when you get a good night's sleep, that's when you feel like you could use a few hours more. That was last night for me. at least 7 hours, but woke up feeling like I could stay there for a lot longer -and I'm a get-out-of-bed-as-soon-as-I'm-awake type person.
lumberjim • Jun 23, 2010 11:16 pm
are you saying that i actually DID get a good night's sleep Sunday night?
monster • Jun 23, 2010 11:18 pm
no, not if you were groggy the next day. Sorry, it was a more general comment, but I didn't make that clear
monster • Jun 23, 2010 11:21 pm
for your experience, I'd blame the cigar. Smoking makes hangovers worse and wakes you up after the beer's put you to sleep.

I have zero faith in pharmaceutical companies. That's not entirely true. My faith would have to grow by several orders of magnitude to reach zero.

I am rather fond of antibiotics when used appropriately, There are a handful of drugs that have proven themselves over time. It's not the meds themselves but the people who are claiming them safe that I especially distrust.

As for the RLS I will try an acupuncturist first and see if that helps at all.

Yes.
sweetwater • Jul 17, 2010 4:56 pm
The Cellar comes through again. I have been going through testing and visits with a neurologist to try to determine the cause for my (annoying to me, interesting to them) symptoms. Had a sleep study, and at least some of the issues are likely related to apnea and sleep deprivation. Next Friday I go back in to be measured for CPAP.
sweetwater • Jul 17, 2010 5:02 pm
It's good to know it helps others. I admit that I am suspicious of the sudden popularity of the CPAPs. Someday some doctor is going to forget if they are auto-prescribing for mobility scooters or CPAPs, and an unlucky patient will be found aboard a scooter going 'round and 'round in their hallway, completely asleep. But I want to try one because the idea of being able to get a good night sleep brings me this//close to tears. Keep the good news coming!
sweetwater • Jul 24, 2010 1:10 pm
Had the CPAP trial sleep study last night, and didn't do too well because - no surprise - I had difficulty getting to and staying asleep. :( Be a week or so before there's any CPAP machine, assuming they'll prescribe one and not pills. Dang it.

I've slept with a CPAP for 2 nights now. Wow. I can feel the difference already. My mask is just a hose with nasal pillows (or some such term) and I've had no problems yet. Double-wow. It's amazing to wake up with a brain that is fully oxygenated, with energy to go all day. What a difference!
sweetwater • Aug 25, 2010 8:31 pm
We'll be traveling for about 6 weeks out of country soon, and I was not planning on taking a machine with me - but now I'm thinking that I will accept any hassle with airlines because I want to keep on feeling this way. Anyone flown across international borders with one? Any problems? Should I get something from my doctor?
