Cellar Turtle Fest 2010

Griff • May 24, 2010 9:22 pm
Turtle mania is sweeping the cellar. We found this little guy out back last week (we did put him back) and spotted Mama Turtle laying eggs today. There are several holes and Lil Pete says this is the second mama she's seen on the bank.

Awesome! Can you identify it?

I'm thinking Eastern Painted.

My dog ate a box turtle in our yard the other day. I was bummed. We don't have many around here.

We'd need dozens for a decent soup.

I wish I had some pot, then I would make a nice spinach sopa for those turtles.

It's so cute. I've never seen a turtle in its natural habitat.

I see snapping turtles from time to time, near the river. You don't want to try to pick up one of those!

This guy likes to watch turtles eating things.

That is soooo cute.

Years (decades) ago I was with my girlfriend at the Phila zoo. They had these 300 pound tortoises. I suddenly started hearing this sound like a series of very loud farts. One tortoise was humping the other in front of the reptile house. I couldn't stop laughing.

I just went for a bike ride with my friend and saw a snapping turtle laying eggs by the side of the sidewalk (fortunately on the stream side, not the road side). Didn't have my camera with me, though. :(

How will you prepare them?

She'll tell them, gently, that life isn't always fair for turtles. She will teach them to take care of themselves. Then, she'll let them fly away. (Oh, the turtle analogy...turtles don't fly.) Then she'll let them scoot away. :)

How can you really prepare anyone?

Teach them skills of the ninja warrior.

raw with a light vinaigrette, I thought. Bummer is apparently gestation is 60-90 days depending on conditions. Sounds like British Rail.
