May 14, 2010: Crow's 'Peckers

Crow is an online cartoonist with the ongoing Nicky510 series, and the Chuckle-A-Duck pages.
In addition to the cartoons, Crow also blogs. This entry was about a family of Nuttall's woodpeckers.

Mom 'Pecker bringing home the bacon...

Here's a momma Nuttall's woodpecker with a beakful of absolutely scrumptious bugs. Mmmm, mm! Just look at those long dangly legs. And the candy corn yellow guy on the end looks especially tempting, doesn't he?

But take a second to notice their eyes. Junior has his lids nicely closed to protect them from the scratchy bark. But what about mom? Notice that her lids are actually still open (they don't close top to bottom but more sideways).

In Crow's next entry, one of the pictures has Pop 'Pecker cleaning out baby poop...

Whew, had to climb all the way in. And, coming out, dad's got a poopy surprise. Because, think about it. If the poop was allowed to pile up in there it'd be pretty rank pretty quickly. So, not only do mom and dad bring food in, the also bring the result out.

I warned Crow you people might eat his family of Woodpeckers, and his reply was...
Well, if they're interested, I actually baked 'em in a pie ...

No no, diversity is the new black. The recipe must be inclusive, encompassing all birds... except snowbirds, 'cause they're just too old and tough. :flycatch:
