Military shuts down fast food in Afghanistan - "It's not an amusement park"

richlevy • Apr 5, 2010 11:16 pm
From here

Now knowing how badly suppliers rip off the military, for all I know the Pentagon's cost for a Whopper could be the same as a rocket launcher, but even so this seems sort of tough.

In the sprawling military base at Kandahar, the fast food outlets facing the axe include Burger King, Pizza Hut, and the U.S. chain restaurant T.G.I. Friday's that features a bar with alcohol-free margaritas and other drinks -- all set along the bustling "Boardwalk" area of the base.
The U.S. military says its beef with the burger joints is that they take up valuable resources like water, power, flight and convoy space and that cutting back on non-essentials is key to running an efficient military operation.
"This is a war zone -- not an amusement park," Command Sgt. Maj. Michael Hall wrote in a blog earlier this year.
"Supplying nonessential luxuries to big bases like Bagram and Kandahar makes it harder to get essential items to combat outposts and forward operating bases, where troops who are in the fight each day need resupply with ammunition, food and water."
I guess you don't get to be Sgt. Major without learning how to tell the difference between a war zone and an amusement park.

I think troops who are in the fight each day might like to know they can get a slice of pizza when they get off the front lines. I can only assume that they know that they're in a war zone. After 8+ years in Afghanistan, are our supply lines so fragile that we can't ship pizza and mortar rounds at the same time?

Not an amusement park? How are we going to break the news to Big Sarge?
xoxoxoBruce • Apr 5, 2010 11:47 pm
That's Command Sgt. Major, and he knows better than anyone the supply lines fragility. The air traffic at Bagram and Kandahar is horrific, and he wants the supply lines, to the guys actually doing the fighting, not to be compromised supplying nonessentials to the guys that are at those bases as support.

There are no front lines, the people fighting are scattered at outposts where they are in constant combat with the enemy. They are stuck there until their unit is rotated out, or they are flown out on a litter. Either way, when they past through Bagram or Kandahar, pizza is the last thing on their minds.

The Command Sgt. Major is obviously more concerned for the safety and welfare of the fighting units than the off duty pleasure of the support personnel at the relatively safe supply bases.

I would suggest that you follow Mike Yon's descriptions of how this war is playing out.

So after 8 years we have not built up the infrastructure to support our supply chain? That is kind of scary.

Don't the line units get rotated back to the bases?

Is there any "suplly line" difference between providing a slice of pizza to a soldier in TGIF, or in the mess hall?

No, we were distracted by Iraq, remember. When we got back to the real problem, Afghanistan, there was even less supply chain. Russia pressured, and bribed, it's former USSR states not to let us use airspace, and the only land line through Pakistan has become unreliable by stepped up Taliban attacks on both sides of the border.
Don't forget there are a hell of a lot more troops to supply now, and they are using a lot more materiel with the increase in fighting.

Don't the line units get rotated back to the bases?

As I understand it, the fighting units may sometimes change outposts as the campaign dictates, but they are in the thick of it for the duration of their tour, then rotated home as a unit. I haven't read anything about R&R during their tours.

Counter-insurgent warfare is up close and personal, the units work like sports teams. They have to trust and depend on each other, and you just can't rotate unknown people in and out. They are stretched pretty thin, in most cases, anyway. The current "surge" is manning more outposts, but they are still small units.

Bagram and Kandahar are support and command bases, operating full capacity air traffic, both military and commercial, 24/7.

So when all of you armchair quarterbacks were there what did you think?
Aliantha • Apr 6, 2010 8:38 pm
My cousin who just got home from there had a couple of weeks off during his tour. He didn't think it was a picnic being at the base regardless of the fast food joints around, and he much preferred getting care packages from us here at home than going to burger king or any of the others.

I didn't ask him, but I don't think he cared if there was junk food available or not. He was there to do a job and just wanted it done as quickly and safely as possible.
TheMercenary • Apr 6, 2010 8:49 pm
And then to get home in one bit. Good on him. Glad he is OK.

Arm chair. That's it.... I kept thinking monday morning but knew it wasn't quite right. Thx.
richlevy • Apr 6, 2010 9:11 pm
The only bit I know about military logistics is from reading Pagonis's book. As a general rule, in any supply chain there is a certain amount of elasticity. In theory, there should be excess capacity which is occupied by luxuries, say 20 pallets of frozen pizza dough. In an emergency, those 20 pallets can be replaced by an AFV or tank.

If I understand this correctly, then the either capacity to move necessary supplies has shrunk, the amount of necessary supplies has risen, or the amount of unnecessary supplies has risen.

Option C means that the excess capacity is still there if needed. Options A or B mean that operations have expanded or capacity has shrunk.

It really sucks that in all the money that got sucked into Iraq, building literally crappy buildings, not to mention a 'super embassy' compound that we are probably going to be forced to abandon in the near future, noone could find a spare 100 million to upgrade two airports in Afghanistan.

My experience has been that there was but one company that was pre-positioned to provide service to deployed troops, and I was the receipent of those services, Haliburton. Love them or hate them, they were the only company who over the 50 years learned to pre-position themselves to provide the services that we needed. Were they always good? no. Where they always there? yes. The whole smoke and mirrors bullshit arguement that there were "no bid" contracts was a weak arguement put forward by those who failed to get in the game early. Were the buildings crapy? sure, but the beat laying in the sand. Did all the generators work all the time? nope, but there were people there to fix them. Did the food suck? Nope, because we ate pretty damm well.

Ask folks in the inner city or those, particularly minorities. who feel disenfranchised and they will say the same thing about ACORN.

For forty years they pre-positioned themselves to be there for the underserved community. The whole smoke and mirrors bullshit argument that they had an institutional plan to commit voter fraud was a weak argument by those who did not want to see increased voter participation in the minority communities.l

Were they always good? no Did the minority community get assistance with housing, credit and finance issues, voter registration. You bet they did.

And they never sexually molested (or allegedly gang raped) a co-worker or knowingly endangered the lives of others and committed negligent homicide from faulty wiring in showers.

And that is the bottom line of my points. Did H. Fuck Up? sure? did they over charge? Sure. I say hammer them, get the money back. But don't pretend that any other company could have provided the support that they provided. They made the whole thing happen and many of their people got killed, with none of the insurance that our troops got. That is a bigger issue to me. The few highlighted issues which you have brought up, do not diminish the support they provided. I say attack those failings on a specific case by case basis and let the chips fall where they may. I have no problem with that.

This country is only in danger because of the people who currently are in the majority of Congress combined with a Demoncrat in the presidents office.

I would fully support a Congress of one party and a president of another party, but 8 years of Bush have shown us that a party of one in the White House and Congress is a bad combination and that needs to be rectified at all costs, through legal means..... This has nothing to do with the previous seven pages, but, is somewhat relevant to the topic at hand. It looks like the rulers in Kyrgyzstan, a country that we have military bases in to help supply our troops in Afghanistan, just got overthrown. While analysis don't expect the base or supply route to be affected initially because of this, the opposition leaders, who are now in power, are much more pro-Russia than pro-US. Russia has been trying to pressure the old Kyrgyzstan rulers to not allow the US to have military bases in Kyrgyzstan for a while now and have always failed because of the economic benefits. This has the possibility of changing if the opposition stay true to their more pro-Russia views and give in to Russia's influence.

Screw you, hypocrite.

Two sides of the same coin, dude.

In the later, you are the armchair quarterback.

So what is your point? You think you are more right? You think that some group like ACORN that broke the law is above the laws broken by contractors hired by Haliburton? or that in some way Haliburton condoned the law breaking actions of their subcontractors or that the people actually caught on video who represented ACORN were not responsible for their actions?

You have confused the two organizations and how they are structured. Haliburton subcontracts much of their services, ACORN did not. Not two sides of the same coin.

Your arm chair quarterbacking have no basis in fact unless of course you are going to tell us you worked for ACORN.

I did receive the excellent services of Haliburton on a regular basis while on deployment.

My point is simple...apply the same standards to both.

Both received govt funding...one, far more signficantly. Both have engaged in questionable practices...one far more serious (gang rape) and nearly $1 billion in overcharges in the last seven years.

You cant or wont do that.

So Haliburton subcontracts and ACORN has distinct sub-orgs that separate voter advocacy and housing assistance.

One supports the military and one supports disadvantaged minorities (tit suckers)

Why should they not be held to the same standard?

I have never said they should be judged by different standards as you have.

1. Where did I state they should be "judged by different standards"?

2. Where did I state that "disadvantaged minorities" were "tit suckers"?

Really. You are really reaching here and reading into my statements. Obviously reading what you want to believe about me....

Further, how many "gang rapes" happened that taint the whole organization and do you have proof that the organization was complicit? Or was this the responsibility of one person or group of people who should be held accountable for their actions?

Same could be said about the ACORN employees.

Yet, you do not apply the same standards. Read your posts in the ACORN thread and see if you applied the same standard that you propose for Haliburton employees.
TheMercenary • Apr 8, 2010 10:01 pm
Ok, you can't support your statements. Thanks.

Anyone can do some basic research and see the differences between "Haliburton" (or were you talking about KBR) and ACORN. The differences were huge, I mean since ACORN is now gone and Haliburton is still around.

Here is a good little factoid:

ACORN parent group founded in 1970

Haliburton parent group founded in 1910

The differences are just so huge.

I'm confused. If I misinterpreted you, that's one thing.

But are you seriously trying to claim that a moderator (who one can assume knows the criteria for banning) quoting one of those criteria in reference to a poster is too subtle to be interpreted as a reference to banning? If that's subtle, what is the obvious interpretation?

You are the only one that said anything about banning. I was reminding them of the fucking rules.
A lot of people, myself included, are sick and tired of the Merc/Redux pissing match being repeated, verbatim, in threads they don't belong. They are more than welcome to take it back where it started, and piss away, till the cows come home, but in this thread they're becoming intolerably irritating.
TheMercenary • Apr 9, 2010 12:06 am
Just ban us both and be done with it... be sure and send me a message before you do it.

Don't arguments that started over the military fast food thing belong in the military fast food thread?

What's the big deal? Let 'em have at it. Don't read it if you don't like it. My favorite unwritten rule, knocked into my skull some time ago.

"Well, when I hit new threads it's always there..." Yeah, well I get sick of word association too. ;)

That's the rule. If you point out someone's misssssstake, your post is going to include a mistake of your own. I'm just following the rules *trying to dance out of this one*

OK, two Dwellars walked into a bar. The first guy looked at the other one and said "Are you the man who shot my paw?" and the other one put his paw on the counter and said "that's one" and the other one replied "why the long face?"

This happened back in the pioneer days. A farmer has advertised for a wife, a woman writes back and eventually appears at the train station at the closest town. The farmer goes to pick her up at the station in his horse drawn wagon.

As the horse is crossing a small stream, it stumbles and jostles the wagon. Once across the stream, the man gets down, walks over to the horse, and stares into its eyes. Finally, he states, "That's one." The man gets back in and they continue their ride.

A bit further down the path, the horse stumbles when stepping over a fallen tree. The man gets out, stares the horse in the eyes, and boldly states, "That's two!" He gets back in and they move on.

As the afternoon sun began to set, the horse once again loses its footing on a mossy slope. The man gets down, goes to the front of the horse he stares it in the eyes and firmly says, "That's three," removes a pistol from his vest, and shots the horse dead.

The woman, quite upset at seeing the beautiful horse killed, says, "That's terrible, why would you do such a thing!"

The man stares at his wife and firmly says, "That's one!"

It's not really a funny joke, but "That's one" has stuck in my head.
