Sheriff Launches Pedal Vision Program

Stationary bike will be source of power for TV

PHOENIX - At Tent City Thursday, Sheriff Joe Arpaio unveiled his newest endeavor, "Pedal Vision." Inmates will be able to get TV privileges by using a bicycle to power the television.

Sheriff Arpaio says that half of his inmates are overweight, and that this is a way for them to get in shape while enjoying their favorite past-time -- TV.

The stationary bike, when pedaled, generates 12 volts of electricity, which powers the 19-inch television inside the viewing area.

One hour of pedaling powers one hour of TV viewing. If the inmate slows down while pedaling, a noise warns the exerciser that the TV is shutting down.

"We're going to do the best we can in our jail system to help the inmates lose weight, and at the same time, give them the luxury of watching whatever they want to watch on television," says Sheriff Joe.

The new bike is only available in the women's tents, but if the program goes well, it could be put in the men's tents as well.

I kinda like this idea.

I do too. Makes huge amounts of sense... I've always though its crazy that at the gym, all the treadmills, elipticals, bikes, and stairbastards are plugged in using electricity instead of it going the other way. I bet we could heat the pools that way, not just run the tvs.

I like the idea too. Even though I HATE Joe.

But I'm wondering if this will encourage pedal philia.

This reminds me of a story in one of Amy Tan's books where a group of natives in the jungle steal a TV and run it by riding a bicycle. Anyone remember the title of that book? I've forgotten.

What are you talking about. 85% of all gonorrhea is directly traceable to classicman. You even admitted it in a public meltdown.

"past-times"? FFS! No wonder this country is going to the dogs. Someone stick that "journalist" in jail and give them a bike that powers an English 101 DVD.....

(I love the idea for prisons, gyms and homes.)

What happens if Weight Watchers starts marketing it? Does the sheriff get royalties? Or the prison? Then will they replace tents with buildings? Or just enrich the Sherriff’s campaign fund?
