Mar 31, 2010: Nepal's Hawkeye Pierce

In Nepal, where medical facilities are limited, especially in rural areas, there is a master surgeon called Dr Sanduk Ruit. He's an eye specialist, and my reference to Hawkeye pierce is that he does production line (meatball) surgery, in tents, with limited equipment, and has restored the eyesight to between 3 and 4 MILLION people.

Once condemned by the international medical community as unthinkable and reckless, this mass surgery 'in the bush' started spreading from Nepal to poor countries worldwide nearly two decades ago.

But like Hawkeye, he just said to the critics, quiet down I'm trying to work here, and work he did, proving he could help millions.
Fuck cancer and blindness.

Ah ha! Those are the covers they put on the eyes post-surgery, and now they've been pulled down and are dangling by the bottom piece of tape.

3 million people over 20 years is still 411 surgeries a day, 365 days a year. That's kind of nuts. Surely he means "the assembly-line approach" has restored sight to that many people, and not himself personally.

But can he perform these surgeries blindfolded?

Now all they need is a good dermatologist.

This may be linked with the Fred Hollows Foundation.

Fred was an eye specialist who did a lot of such operations, and more than that, helped set up programs in developing countries to enable them to do the operations (including making new lenses, etc) themselves.
I think he did work in Nepal and East Africa.

A quick Google search reveals that "In 1980, while working on a Nepal Blindness Survey, [Ruit] met Fred Hollows who became his mentor. Fred helped make his life goal clear: the restoration of eyesight to people who were unnecessarily blind."
