New field of 64: best song
I'm ready, let's do this; let's start from scratch or
you can review the previous thread. If you don't understand field of 64, you will once I publish the link for the tournament. Or you could browse through the
previous field of 64 links to get an idea of how the tournament works.
First, though, we are just trying to find 64 songs which will compete for the title of best song, and then we're trying to "seed" them into a tournament setting where they will compete songo-a-songo.
Put forth your nominations: which songs do you think should compete? And anyone may "second" nominations that are put forth. Seconding will count towards seeding.
My nominations come from the earlier thread.
Rhapsody in Blue
Wichita Lineman
Ring of Fire
Pride (In the Name of Love)
Careless Whisper
The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face
Greensleeves
I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry
Bohemian Rhapsody
I'm adding Beatles:
A Day in the Life
Hey Jude
From the earlier thread:
Hallelujah Chorus - Handel
Carolina In My Mind - James Taylor
Wishing You Were Here - Chicago
I am the Mercury - Jimmy Spheeris
One for Daddy-O - Nat Adderly
Tuxedo Junction - Glenn Miller
I may add more in a bit.
Moon River--Henry Mancini
Black Cow--Steely Dan
The Story in Your Eyes--Moody Blues
Beach Boys, anything off of Pet Sounds. Pick one.
Just suggestions...don't use if they suck and I just don't know it. ;)
If you're putting up Black Cow, I'm putting up Aja.
For Pet Sounds, we'll go with "God Only Knows", and I'm seconding.
I was thinking God Only Knows, too. In fact it's stuck in my head.
I can never pick a Steely Dan song. I'm a huge fan. I'll second Aja if you want to leave off Black Cow? Same album anyway!
We'll wait for Flint for his opinion here.
I just saw youtubers of Fagan explaining the chords for "Josie" and "Peg" and he might as well have been speaking conversational French.
Good idea, Flint knows from Steely Dan!
Just my two cents, and it's kind of already shaping up this way, but I think that each band should only get one song entry. That way it doesn't come down to 15 Beatles songs going head-to-head.
Makes sense to me.
UT, I just watched a little bit of Fagen talking about Peg. You think YOU don't understand it! My ex, the piano player, will love it though. I'll have to send the link.
It is very hard to choose since there are so many that can be called 'best songs'
A Whiter Shade Of Pale - Procol Harum
Time Of The Season - Zombies
The Tracks Of My Tears - The Miracles

Seconding Aqualung, too.
ha we both chose Kashmir. I'm not sure why because I love all Zeppelin. I agree it's hard. I second Pigs too.
Brass in Pocket--Pretenders
this is too hard.

Under The Boardwalk- The Drifters
creep - but only
this version
ok.. i'll stop. i could list 64 songs... you have a process for selecting the 64...like taking everyone's first song first, and so on?...so that a spaz like me doesn't tilt the whole thing?
Der Kommisar - Falco
Blinded by Science - Thomas Dolby
Sweet Dreams - The Eurythmics
Eat It - Weird Al Yankovick
Shock the Monkey - Peter Gabriel
(Stuck in the 80s much? yeah, I know. But many of my nominations are already up)

LJ should be shot for daring to suggest Rick Astley.
I'll second Eat It. And Sweet Dreams.
you can 2nd, and you know you like Rick.
you can 2nd, and you know you like Rick.
You've some confusion about the first letter of that word.
If a song really sucks, can we un-vote it? I mean...we can second songs, can we detract them based on thumbs down? If we can, please please please don't include Unchained Melody. *shudders* It's seriously the most overrated wedding dance tripe ever to cross the pike. ;)
seconding the unseconding.
(I need to get out more.)
Seconding 'Ain't no Sunshine'.
Putting forth
'Us and Them' - Pink Floyd
'Tupelo' - John Lee Hooker (
This version.)
Pick Up the Pieces--Average White Band
Give Up the Funk (Tear the Roof off the Sucker)--Parliament
Maybe Unchained Melody belongs in a 'Most covered song of all time' thread right behind Eleanor Rigby.Neither are my favorite songs but they are/were very popular. This thread isn't your favorite rock songs of all time anyway.:p:
Most are though like this one.
Battle Of Evermore - The Love Mongers
(Cover by Ann Wilson of Heart )
That's true, what's popular isn't necessarily any good. So, the trick is to sift the good from the merely mainstream. That's what the final 4 will end up being, the good, if'n I know me some musicians!
Case in point: Old Time Rock n Roll can bite me...but EVERY band EVER covers it. ;)
Seconding 'Ain't no Sunshine'.
Putting forth
'Us and Them' - Pink Floyd
'Tupelo' - John Lee Hooker (This version.)

ut, On my old Saturday Night Live Music a Go-Go VHS tape, Orbison doing Crying was one of the handful they showed the whole clip. It is hauntingly beautiful. Wow. He was amazing.
I remember that SNL. It was so awesome.
So, I'm reminded too of:
Pick a Stevie Wonder. Pick one. I dare ya.
Alive--Pearl Jam
(If either mentioned before then I'm seconding.)
These were both inspired by their live performances on aforementioned SNL tape. Wonder did Overjoyed, but there are so many I couldn't pin it down. Sir Duke?

Nominations are closed, the field will be set soon.
Puh...how could I forget Natalie?...yeah, and...I forgot Norah Jones, but mostly I forgot:
Pussy Control--Prince. :D
It could have been worse. I showed remarkable restraint.
I know it's closed, but if it weren't I'd add
I Can't Get Started
and
I Can't Get Next to You
what the fuck is taking so long at this point?
I have a last bit of coding to do and it's driving me batty. Any minute now...
I thought maybe you were waiting on that asshole Flint to give us a Steely Dan song. ;)
And just because it's been bothering me. I hate Freebird. Really. It goes on and on and on and on and it's raucous and repetitive. I feel the same about Layla...after the actual singing is over. Sorry. :bolt:
The field is set.
You can see the full name of the song, and the seeding, if you mouse over the shortened song name.
In future I will make this thing longer so that longer names can fit in there.
Let me know, y'all, if there are any display errors from your browser.
Some match-up consfusion?
Whole Lotta Love
Aqualung
Personal Jesus
Sweet Dreams
Crazy Diamond
We'll start once we know things look good and these little errors are fixed.
It should have been Into the Mystic, not a second Little Wing.
Does it look better now P&M?
Yeah, Flint sucks.
No Steely Dan, at all. Only the best band evah.
Into the Mystic and Crazy Diamond still need a match-up.
Looks good, but Aqualung is the only on that doesn't highlight.
Doesn't highlight, what does that mean? Is it fatal? Should we just begin?
Best of 5 votes wins, to start. Seed number is in parenthesis. Seeding for this one was pretty arbitrary, based on randomness and seconding...
Who should advance...
Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding - Elton John
or
Whipping Post - Allman Bros.
Vote right here in the thread.
Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding - Elton John
Whipping Post - Allman Bros.
although I personally love EJ
ah crap I'm having second thoughts.
sorry Elton but you just don't translate over a cult following
Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding - Elton John
Yeah, hang on... in previous iterations, wasn't it like 2 out of 3? Once it had two votes, it won the round.
it's best of five now - 3 votes to win.
Whole Lotta Love
- or -
Aqualung?
current field of 64It's best of 5 in the first round so we don't have another *ahem* holy grail debacle.
Aqualung. Debacle? Fuck you, your precious Monty Python lost fair and square.
Big Tootsie fans are we? :D
Whole Lot of Love
When you put Aqualung up against Whole Lot Of Love it's sure to lose.
Meh
Whole Lotta Love I guess
Personal Jesus?
- or -
Tambourine Man?
current field of 64this is where the version matters.
I'd say personal Jesus if it were Cash's version....but it's listed as the original, so I have to vote for Bob.
Tambo man
Actually, jim, the Tambourine Man listed is the Byrds version...
I do prefer Dylan's version (PS: Bob Dylan attended Bennington for a short time in the late 50s or early 60s), but my vote still goes to
Tambourine Man.
Ants Marching
- or -
Melissa
did we ever discuss possibly allowing unlimited unique voting for a set interval ...like 2 or 3 hours or whatever, and taking the total at the end of each period?
Why not do it like polls?
Why not do it like polls?
a poll a day, and we'd have a winner in how many days?
It doesnt have to be one a day. There are how many rounds? Just like a wrestling tournament.
We'll need to consult Vince McMahon.
Next vote I'll put up more than one song and we can vote simultaneously. That'll speed it up.
Well crud, I like me some Dave Matthews, but I'm going to have to go with sweet Melissa.
eta: 'cause it's really a very pretty song. :)
I thought you needed votes for progression. ;)
i was holding off, because I've voted on every song so far....
but the apathy has gone too far.
Ants!
I'm ambivalent about apathy.
I like both of those songs equally.
*flips a coin*
Ants go marching
Ants it is.
Now, please vote for up to five of the following battles:
Sweet Dreams are Made of This vs. Train in Vain
Free Bird vs. Sultans of Swing
Moon River vs. Outshined
Shine On You Crazy Diamond vs. God Only Knows
Frankenstein vs. One Headlight
You may vote one of these, or two, or all five, however you prefer.
Sweet Dreams

Crazy Diamond
And for the first time I'm voting
Sweet Dreams
Sultans of Swing
Moon River
Crazy Diamond
Frankenstein
Sweet Dreams are Made of This
Sultans of Swing
Moon River
Shine On You Crazy Diamond
Frankenstein
Sweet Dreams vs Tarin in Vain shouldn't be a first round matchup, IMHO.
The seeding is a little rough.
One last vote needed!
Train in Vain (lennox sux)
Sultans
Moon River
God Only Knows
One Headlight
Final match still pending... Frankenstein 2, One Headlight 1...

Well, when you ask a dumb question...
If you click on the link UT supplies with many of these posts, you will find this information. Just mouse over the song in question. According to the Cellar field of 64 chart, it's the Mancini version, which incidentally, peaked at number 11 on the charts according to Wikipedia.
Current field of 64Moon river makes you want to go dance on a hill full of Daisies. OH no...that's already been done.
I can't stand that song.

I didn't ask a dumb question dumb-ass and keep yer fucking advice to yourself troll.
Glatt, a troll? I don't think so Sky.
When someone tail posts you only to add the word dumb in reference to yourself, twice in a row, then that feels trollish to me.
I didn't vote for it because it wasn't this version
That's a good version too spexx. I didn't vote for it because it wasn't he EJ version.
Sky,
You asked a question that was already answered in the chart, and when Shawnee tried to help you, you responded with "thanks for stating the obvious." Which is not a nice way of responding to someone trying to help you.
So maybe I shouldn't have said it was a dumb question, but *shrug*.
I LIKE Shawnee. It was sarcasm which she is able to get and if she doesn't she is more than capable of responding for herself.
Shawnee. If I hurt your feelings. I'm sorry. Do I come off as a meanie?
glatt
Thank you for the 'sort of' half- ass apology.
No it's all good. sky and I do that sometimes. No harm, no foul.
Lord, don't let me be the cause of problems between two dwellars (if I am not one of the two.) ;) Seriously, I cause enough trouble.
glatt, you're very kind.

what WAS the method?
In this case I just sorted by number of seconds, which led to too much randomness in the grouping because most songs had two or three seconds.
Imagine
Simple Man
Comfortably Numb
I'm way too unfocused to know, but if it's still on the block I'll pick 25 or 6 to 4. Ahhh, Chicago in their best times. Love the horns.

the vote between Shine on you Crazy Diamond and Little Wing has me stumped.
agreed, truly offensive
and if Whole Lotta Love had lost to Whipping Post, I would have hunted the voters down and done bad awful things to their persons.
WLL= nice but overrated. *duck and cover*

WLL= nice but overrated.
if by 'overrated' you mean awesome in it's elemental intensity and simplistic guttural response, then I agree.
My problem with Whole Lotta Love is twofold: it's not the best LZ song by far. In fact, I can't stand it. Give me Over the Hills and Far Away, anyday.
The other thing is that our local "rock" station thinks it's the ONLY song LZ ever produced...so it's the only one I ever hear on the radio. Of the dozens of wonderful Zeppelin tunes, all they ever play is the raucous and repetitive Whole Lotta Love (zzzzyuuuuummmm) Whole Lotta Love (zzzzyuummmmm) Whole Lotta Love (zzzzyuuuummmm.)
My big brother was a huge LZ fan, as were many, and had all the albums. WLL is just so...overdone, I guess. IMHO
They do the same thing with Steely Dan and Reeling in the Years.

I like CN better too, but was just voting opposite C-man, as he's knocked out my last few votes.
Black Sabbath is about as melodic as a dying calf in a hailstorm.

There are way better Pink Floyd songs than Comfortably Numb.
House Of the Rising sun like Comfortably numb are over played so maybe
that effects my vote somewhat.

Black Sabbath is about as melodic as a dying calf in a hailstorm.
There's more going on with that song than melody, vocals and Ozzy swinging his head like a pinwheel. :p:
Same with Whole Lotta Love, although not my favorite Led Zeppelin song there is so much more going on musically as to merit a vote.
No, I agree with that. In fact, my ex (who I can best describe as a percussionistic jazz-fusion lovin' Berklee college of music piano player) even once couldn't believe I was dissin' AC/DC. He said, basically, even if you don't LIKE the music...if you knew anything you would see how good it is musically, especially the "bass line" in Shook Me---(?)---music peeps, is that the phrase I was looking for?
I do really like Zep...just think it's the worst of their popular songs, that Whole Lotta.
I'm just difficult and I do love some nice melody and percussion and jazzy sounds.
I SAW Ozzy when I was in HS. :)
We are debuting "Whole Lotta Rosie" at the Ashton Tavern tomorrow night so... this question is relevant to my interests.
AC/DC is basically, let's take blues rock and bash you over the head with it. Most AC/DC songs have three notes, except for Angus's solo which has 29. It is not "good musically". I would say early to mid Stones can be just as simple, and yet much harder to pull off, because it has hidden swing to it which can't be duplicated. And yet, AC/DC does in fact rock, simply because it's so pure of heart and loudness. It's instinctive, it kicks you in the crotch and you can't ignore it.
Thanks. Was hoping to hear from the bass player. :)
I don't know a lot...though ex tried to teach me some things. I would surprise him from time to time if we were listening to some fusion and I'd notice something in the background, or something in the way it was arranged.
Some day there will be a road trip to see your band, UT. I'll throw Bri in the trunk and we'll just show up.
I see Linger is still lingering on. will someone please shoot that bitch? I think the next field of 64 should be for the worst song ever.
[petulant baby]Well, this one was flawed since the beginning with the obvious omission of STEELY DAN and the heavy-handed heavy guitar raucous stuff that I've been hearing since HS and it still sounds like nails on a blackboard and having heard it 9000 times it only produces yawns and chills whereas I could hear Black Cow 50 million times and still think it's beautiful[/still pouting over that]
I've been voting for the lessers of the evil, imo. Kinda like voting for president.
Just messin'. I mess. Sorta. ;)
But, for the rockers:
... it kicks you in the crotch and you can't ignore it.
I avoid anything that kicks me in the crotch.:nadkick::bolt:
Whole Lotta Love, if only because it's the Byrds not Dylan we're voting on.
Mr Tambourine Man
I agreed with Shaws assessment of Whole lotta love from a couple days ago. no where near one of the best LZ songs.
Whole Lotta Love has 4.

The Boxer
I'm going to be at the gym when Whole Lotta Love comes up again. Consider this my mail in vote.
Can't do that, wouldn't be prudent... but Sundays are light sometimes so maybe the vote won't be up when you get back.
Plus I should really concentrate on other things too so maybe I won't be around to tally the vote in a timely fashion
All The Young Dudes.
Even though I like S&G very much I like Bowie more plus we need something of another genre and that song is one of the best of all time too.
Interesting factoid about the Boxer. It took over 100 hours to record.
A little about Into The Mystic.
Listed as number 7 on the All Time 885 Greatest Songs compiled in 2004
Moondance( of which Into the Mystic is a song thereof) was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999 and has continued to be a highly acclaimed album in the 2000s
In March 2007, Moondance was listed as #72 on the NARM Rock and Roll Hall of Fame list of the "Definitive 200".
In December 2009, it was voted #11 top Irish album of all time.
Teh boxer.
My friend played Into the Mystic on a boombox at his mother's funeral just a few months after she spoke at my wedding. Makes me cry....
yeah , When people play songs at funerals it is a great way to mess up a song forever. Same with Mclaughlin's Angel song played at my aunts funeral. I just can't listen to it without it provoking strong sad emotions.
This reminded me.
I have decided on Walk To The Paradise garden for my moms funeral when the time comes.
I didn't go looking. I heard it one day and just knew I wanted that one. I don't know if that is sick or morbid to plan but it has to happen at sometime. I just don't see how she can go on like this for very long. The song inspires all of the peace I hope is there waiting for her when she does go. I don't want her to of course. She is suffering. I don't know how long people can suffer but I just can't see very far out in the future for her.
I'm sorry...what a downer :( That just spilled out.
All The Young Dudes.

Whole Lotta Love
(Love the blackberry)..... Voting from the car on the way home from the gym. Jinx is driving.
Bowie?
To be fair, he DID "help" write it (most people agree that he probably basically wrote it himself) and played it live pretty consistently in the 70s.
To be fair, he DID "help" write it (most people agree that he probably basically wrote it himself) and played it live pretty consistently in the 70s.
Thanks.
Bowie did write it and sang his own dang song which as been included in his Albums.
The song originated after Bowie came into contact with Mott the Hoople's bassist Peter Watts and learned that the band was ready to split due to continued lack of commercial success. When Mott rejected his first offer of a composition, "Suffragette City" (from The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars), Bowie wrote "All the Young Dudes" in short order specially for them, allegedly sitting cross-legged on the floor of a room in Regent Street, London, in front of the band's lead singer, Ian Hunter.
David Bowie's own studio version from 1973's sessions for Aladdin Sane, went unreleased until 1994 when it appeared in mono on the semi-legal album RarestOneBowie. It was subsequently included, again in mono, on The Best of David Bowie 1969/1974, the 30th Anniversary edition of Aladdin Sane, and the 2-disc US version of Best of Bowie. A stereo version circulates unofficially among collectors, as does a version consisting of the backing track for Mott the Hoople's version with Bowie's guide vocal. A variant of this version, combining Bowie's vocal on the choruses with Ian Hunter on the verses, was released on the 2006 reissue of All the Young Dudes. Bowie's first released version was in 1974 on the David Live double LP. Bowie
Gotta go with Tambo Man again.
Thanks.

Yeah, I've seen him do it, but he wrote it for Mott, they made it famous, and that's what we're voting on.
Oh, Whole Lotta Love.
Did you know that they used to blare Whole Lotta Love over the tank speakers in Viet Nam to scare Charlie?

Pitchfork.com
said: According to Joy Press and Simon Reynolds' The Sex Revolts , American soldiers in Vietnam would ride into battle blasting "Whole Lotta Love", the part where it roars out of its fuzzed-out miasmic free-jazz middle section and back into its titanic brontosaurus riff. It's a terrifying image, bloodthirsty heavily armed children fueling themselves with the heaviest, most violent music available. But it's oddly exhilarating, too, and that's the genius of the song. Zeppelin turned teenage sex-drive into apocalyptic precision-tooled violence. Even in that experimental stretch, the peals of feedback sound like bombs falling. --Tom Breihan

Shine On You Crazy Diamond
Is it wrong that I'm an uniformed voter?
I know I like Crazy Diamond, and I'm voting for it with this post.
What is this young dudes song, and how did it make it this far?
It's a joke song written by one artist to embarrass another. It needs to be ousted.
Not true
ohhhh and . . . .
Shine On You Crazy Diamond
i think i'm already beaten but i have to say.... all the young dudes. Shine On is gorgeous, but it's no anthem. Dudes is so cross-generationally powerful, shine on is just a nice ode to a lost friend.

UT - you shoulda never told 'em it was a tie!
I already knew. I don't feel like I care enough to vote, so to vote against the one I've been vehemently against since the get-go...just seems like it would be crappy of me at this stage in the competition.
Sorry guys.
to vote against the one I've been vehemently against since the get-go...just seems like it would be crappy of me at this stage in the competition.
Why is that? It would seem natural.
I think people who have not been involved should do the tie breaker too.
Or UT can make the call or someone with alot of emotional energy invested in their song can bribe me one way or the other.
I'm sort of feeling like Shawnee at the moment.
lol...That's a funny thought. ^^^
Shine on you crazy Diamond
Does that count? :p:

I like both songs equally and that in itself isn't enough to break a tie.

is it that the songs people wanted to win have been eliminated?
Like ....once your team is out of the playoffs, you could give a shit who wins the SuperBowl.... as long as it's a good game?
We're just trying to figure out which tune can beat Led Zep's maybe 5th best song...
I'll take, "What is Bohemian Rhapsody?" for a thousand Alex.
I'm actually surprised that Whole Lotta Love made the final.
I assumed that the nerdliness of the cellar would have seen to it's elimination to tainted love in round 3.
As for it not being Led Zeppelin's best song...... I vacillate....a little....but only because they have such a varied body of work. Like.... you could say Stairway is better....but that's a ballad... or... How Many More Times...but that's 12 bar blues.... or rock-n-roll....but that's almost pop.....
I just go back to the BALLS that song has. It's simple and loud....like a Thunder Storm.
I bet we could do a field of 64 Led Zeppelin Songs...
