New field of 64: best song

Undertoad • Mar 25, 2010 5:49 pm
I'm ready, let's do this; let's start from scratch or you can review the previous thread. If you don't understand field of 64, you will once I publish the link for the tournament. Or you could browse through the previous field of 64 links to get an idea of how the tournament works.

First, though, we are just trying to find 64 songs which will compete for the title of best song, and then we're trying to "seed" them into a tournament setting where they will compete songo-a-songo.

Put forth your nominations: which songs do you think should compete? And anyone may "second" nominations that are put forth. Seconding will count towards seeding.

My nominations come from the earlier thread.

Rhapsody in Blue
Wichita Lineman
Ring of Fire
Pride (In the Name of Love)
Careless Whisper
The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face
Greensleeves
I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry
Bohemian Rhapsody
Undertoad • Mar 25, 2010 6:02 pm
I'm adding Beatles:

A Day in the Life
Hey Jude
Pete Zicato • Mar 25, 2010 6:04 pm
From the earlier thread:

Hallelujah Chorus - Handel
Carolina In My Mind - James Taylor
Wishing You Were Here - Chicago
I am the Mercury - Jimmy Spheeris
One for Daddy-O - Nat Adderly
Tuxedo Junction - Glenn Miller

I may add more in a bit.
Shawnee123 • Mar 25, 2010 6:28 pm
Moon River--Henry Mancini

Black Cow--Steely Dan

The Story in Your Eyes--Moody Blues

Beach Boys, anything off of Pet Sounds. Pick one.

Just suggestions...don't use if they suck and I just don't know it. ;)
Undertoad • Mar 25, 2010 6:32 pm
If you're putting up Black Cow, I'm putting up Aja.

For Pet Sounds, we'll go with "God Only Knows", and I'm seconding.
Shawnee123 • Mar 25, 2010 6:33 pm
I was thinking God Only Knows, too. In fact it's stuck in my head.

I can never pick a Steely Dan song. I'm a huge fan. I'll second Aja if you want to leave off Black Cow? Same album anyway!
Undertoad • Mar 25, 2010 6:50 pm
We'll wait for Flint for his opinion here.

I just saw youtubers of Fagan explaining the chords for "Josie" and "Peg" and he might as well have been speaking conversational French.
Shawnee123 • Mar 25, 2010 6:51 pm
Good idea, Flint knows from Steely Dan!
Clodfobble • Mar 25, 2010 6:52 pm
Just my two cents, and it's kind of already shaping up this way, but I think that each band should only get one song entry. That way it doesn't come down to 15 Beatles songs going head-to-head.
Shawnee123 • Mar 25, 2010 7:11 pm
Makes sense to me.

UT, I just watched a little bit of Fagen talking about Peg. You think YOU don't understand it! My ex, the piano player, will love it though. I'll have to send the link.

ok.. i'll stop. i could list 64 songs... you have a process for selecting the 64...like taking everyone's first song first, and so on?...so that a spaz like me doesn't tilt the whole thing?

If a song really sucks, can we un-vote it? I mean...we can second songs, can we detract them based on thumbs down? If we can, please please please don't include Unchained Melody. *shudders* It's seriously the most overrated wedding dance tripe ever to cross the pike. ;)
Pie • Mar 26, 2010 12:37 pm

skysidhe • Mar 26, 2010 1:06 pm
Maybe Unchained Melody belongs in a 'Most covered song of all time' thread right behind Eleanor Rigby.Neither are my favorite songs but they are/were very popular. This thread isn't your favorite rock songs of all time anyway.:p:

Most are though like this one.

Battle Of Evermore - The Love Mongers
(Cover by Ann Wilson of Heart )
Shawnee123 • Mar 26, 2010 1:08 pm
That's true, what's popular isn't necessarily any good. So, the trick is to sift the good from the merely mainstream. That's what the final 4 will end up being, the good, if'n I know me some musicians!

Case in point: Old Time Rock n Roll can bite me...but EVERY band EVER covers it. ;)

My problem with Whole Lotta Love is twofold: it's not the best LZ song by far. In fact, I can't stand it. Give me Over the Hills and Far Away, anyday.

The other thing is that our local "rock" station thinks it's the ONLY song LZ ever produced...so it's the only one I ever hear on the radio. Of the dozens of wonderful Zeppelin tunes, all they ever play is the raucous and repetitive Whole Lotta Love (zzzzyuuuuummmm) Whole Lotta Love (zzzzyuummmmm) Whole Lotta Love (zzzzyuuuummmm.)

My big brother was a huge LZ fan, as were many, and had all the albums. WLL is just so...overdone, I guess. IMHO

They do the same thing with Steely Dan and Reeling in the Years.

There's more going on with that song than melody, vocals and Ozzy swinging his head like a pinwheel. :p:

Same with Whole Lotta Love, although not my favorite Led Zeppelin song there is so much more going on musically as to merit a vote.
Shawnee123 • Apr 9, 2010 12:16 pm
No, I agree with that. In fact, my ex (who I can best describe as a percussionistic jazz-fusion lovin' Berklee college of music piano player) even once couldn't believe I was dissin' AC/DC. He said, basically, even if you don't LIKE the music...if you knew anything you would see how good it is musically, especially the "bass line" in Shook Me---(?)---music peeps, is that the phrase I was looking for?

I do really like Zep...just think it's the worst of their popular songs, that Whole Lotta.

I'm just difficult and I do love some nice melody and percussion and jazzy sounds.

I SAW Ozzy when I was in HS. :)
Undertoad • Apr 9, 2010 12:43 pm
We are debuting "Whole Lotta Rosie" at the Ashton Tavern tomorrow night so... this question is relevant to my interests.

AC/DC is basically, let's take blues rock and bash you over the head with it. Most AC/DC songs have three notes, except for Angus's solo which has 29. It is not "good musically". I would say early to mid Stones can be just as simple, and yet much harder to pull off, because it has hidden swing to it which can't be duplicated. And yet, AC/DC does in fact rock, simply because it's so pure of heart and loudness. It's instinctive, it kicks you in the crotch and you can't ignore it.
Shawnee123 • Apr 9, 2010 12:46 pm
Thanks. Was hoping to hear from the bass player. :)

I don't know a lot...though ex tried to teach me some things. I would surprise him from time to time if we were listening to some fusion and I'd notice something in the background, or something in the way it was arranged.

Some day there will be a road trip to see your band, UT. I'll throw Bri in the trunk and we'll just show up.

Shawnee123 • Apr 9, 2010 12:50 pm
[petulant baby]Well, this one was flawed since the beginning with the obvious omission of STEELY DAN and the heavy-handed heavy guitar raucous stuff that I've been hearing since HS and it still sounds like nails on a blackboard and having heard it 9000 times it only produces yawns and chills whereas I could hear Black Cow 50 million times and still think it's beautiful[/still pouting over that]

I've been voting for the lessers of the evil, imo. Kinda like voting for president.

Just messin'. I mess. Sorta. ;)

A little about Into The Mystic.

Listed as number 7 on the All Time 885 Greatest Songs compiled in 2004

Moondance( of which Into the Mystic is a song thereof) was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999 and has continued to be a highly acclaimed album in the 2000s

In March 2007, Moondance was listed as #72 on the NARM Rock and Roll Hall of Fame list of the "Definitive 200".
In December 2009, it was voted #11 top Irish album of all time.

My friend played Into the Mystic on a boombox at his mother's funeral just a few months after she spoke at my wedding. Makes me cry....
skysidhe • Apr 11, 2010 1:33 pm
yeah , When people play songs at funerals it is a great way to mess up a song forever. Same with Mclaughlin's Angel song played at my aunts funeral. I just can't listen to it without it provoking strong sad emotions.

This reminded me.
I have decided on Walk To The Paradise garden for my moms funeral when the time comes.
I didn't go looking. I heard it one day and just knew I wanted that one. I don't know if that is sick or morbid to plan but it has to happen at sometime. I just don't see how she can go on like this for very long. The song inspires all of the peace I hope is there waiting for her when she does go. I don't want her to of course. She is suffering. I don't know how long people can suffer but I just can't see very far out in the future for her.

I'm sorry...what a downer :( That just spilled out.

Thanks.

Bowie did write it and sang his own dang song which as been included in his Albums.

The song originated after Bowie came into contact with Mott the Hoople's bassist Peter Watts and learned that the band was ready to split due to continued lack of commercial success. When Mott rejected his first offer of a composition, "Suffragette City" (from The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars), Bowie wrote "All the Young Dudes" in short order specially for them, allegedly sitting cross-legged on the floor of a room in Regent Street, London, in front of the band's lead singer, Ian Hunter.

David Bowie's own studio version from 1973's sessions for Aladdin Sane, went unreleased until 1994 when it appeared in mono on the semi-legal album RarestOneBowie. It was subsequently included, again in mono, on The Best of David Bowie 1969/1974, the 30th Anniversary edition of Aladdin Sane, and the 2-disc US version of Best of Bowie. A stereo version circulates unofficially among collectors, as does a version consisting of the backing track for Mott the Hoople's version with Bowie's guide vocal. A variant of this version, combining Bowie's vocal on the choruses with Ian Hunter on the verses, was released on the 2006 reissue of All the Young Dudes. Bowie's first released version was in 1974 on the David Live double LP. Bowie

Did you know that they used to blare Whole Lotta Love over the tank speakers in Viet Nam to scare Charlie?

Pitchfork.com
said: According to Joy Press and Simon Reynolds' The Sex Revolts , American soldiers in Vietnam would ride into battle blasting "Whole Lotta Love", the part where it roars out of its fuzzed-out miasmic free-jazz middle section and back into its titanic brontosaurus riff. It's a terrifying image, bloodthirsty heavily armed children fueling themselves with the heaviest, most violent music available. But it's oddly exhilarating, too, and that's the genius of the song. Zeppelin turned teenage sex-drive into apocalyptic precision-tooled violence. Even in that experimental stretch, the peals of feedback sound like bombs falling. --Tom Breihan

I'm actually surprised that Whole Lotta Love made the final.

I assumed that the nerdliness of the cellar would have seen to it's elimination to tainted love in round 3.

As for it not being Led Zeppelin's best song...... I vacillate....a little....but only because they have such a varied body of work. Like.... you could say Stairway is better....but that's a ballad... or... How Many More Times...but that's 12 bar blues.... or rock-n-roll....but that's almost pop.....

I just go back to the BALLS that song has. It's simple and loud....like a Thunder Storm.

Still best of 9

Whole Lotta Love

Bohemian Rhapsody

I'm surprise Floyd didn't make it.

Gotta go with Bohemian Rhapsody, Whole Lotta Love is just too grating and repetitive at times.

Bohemian Rhapsody. Freddy Mercury can sing.

I'll go with Boho Rhapsody.

He's busy taking a dirt-nap at present, though.

what should we do next?

64 best pictures of boobs?

64 worst songs?

64 most attractive people?

64 coolest letters of the alphabet?

whatever we do, I'd like to be more careful about the seeding process.

.... like.... if it was best band... have seed division by type or era instead of north south east west....

like oldies, 60-70s, 80-95, 95-current...or whatever

or bands that feature vocals, guitar, rythm sections, keyboard/pianists, etc

or genre....pop, rock, [strike]country[/strike], metal, jam band....

that's what jinx and i were talking about anyway.
