anonymous

What's the point of this me? I know it should probably be obvious to me, but I just don't get it.

You don't need it, that's why you don't get it. When You need it, you'll understand and you'll know what to do.

How anonymous would you be if you had to ask someone for the password?

No, I don't so. It was a typo in the first place anyway. Shoulda been "username."

Why would I ask for anyone for their password? It's a breach of security.
Datalyss • Mar 15, 2010 1:43 am
Alright, if you guess my real name, I'll STFU about the username "anonymous."

It's just a community resource Draxxie. It's been used for humourous stuff and it's been used for serious stuff. For example: someone wanted to post nsfw pics of themselves but didn't want their name on them; so they used the anon login. Someone wanted to express despair and the fact that they were contemplating something drastic, but didn't want that tagged to their Cellar identity: so they used anon. Someone else was having marital issues and didn't particularly want that known about them ... but nonetheless wanted our advice. So the Anon handle was useful for them.

What's the worst that can happen with the anon username? Well, i suppose someone could use it to try and cause a shitstorm ... or to post stuff that isn't true ... but anyone can do that anyway, they don't need the anon handle for that. We all know that Anonymous could be anyone, so we're fairly wise to those possibilities.

In addition to the uses described above, the Anon username can be useful in other ways too. Nutkin reckoned he could guess ages from hands; and to test that out suggested people post pics of their hands anonymously. I think that's pretty cool. It allows agreed and expected anonymity for all kinds of things.

The majority of dwellars aren't really interested in trouble for trouble's sake ... why should we organise ourselves as if they were? It's just a username anyone can use; it' s not like they can break the Cellar with it.

I still want to know the password for Pilau. There have been occasions when I wanted it.
DanaC • Mar 15, 2010 7:15 am
*grins* I'm pretty sure if you gave him a small pile of gravy bones he'd divulge his password :P

Shawnee123 • Mar 15, 2010 9:56 am
No, that will confuse me...Pilau sends me a lot of PMs and I want to know they're really from him!

I couldn't find a dog smilie, so the woof will have to do. :wolf:

Srsly, Drax, do you want people delving into your personal details? And posting them everywhere? Remember just a few months ago you pissed off someone so much they found out more about you than you than you probably know yourself, but then they decided to let it drop.

If you open an invitation like that, one of the sharp folk around here is going to take it as an invitation to have fun with your ss#. I'm not sure why you assume the members of this board are not as internet savvy as you are, but you do and it could end up being a mistake you regret making. So unless you want open season on your personal details, don't invite it.

And that's the last piece of good advice I'm going to give you.

And anyway, it's Dave.

0 for 3.

See, that's why I don't need it. I mean isn't Datalyss anonymous enough. Of course, I'm reasonable sure someone could easily find out things about me if they had my IP address, and knew how to use it, which VampYre obviously did.
classicman • Mar 15, 2010 2:19 pm
lol - did you really try all of them Data?
DanaC • Mar 15, 2010 2:32 pm
It's not about that kind of anonymity, necessarily. It's more not wanting whatever it is to be connected to your identity in here. Without it the people currently using anonymous might find themselves having to shift about through different usernames, just to stay ahead of whatever board-identity crisis they'd engendered this time....oh wait...sorry, no, I'd best not go there :P

Sounds logical. Thank you for giving me a real answer.

I swear I just posted this:

Data, classic thought we were giving you passwords, and that you had tried them all. Reality: you said if we told you your name you would quit worrying about the anon account...which brings to mind Rumpelstiltskin.

And what made you think I was talking about passwords? Does the word "username" ring a bell?

Reality: Did you guess my real name? No.

New plan: Don't reply to this post, and I'll really STFU about it, 'k?

Are you paying attention at all? You were confused (at least that is what I believe that the smilie that reads "confused" and has question marks above its head means) about classic's post, and I was explaining it.

Oh, never mind.

Still, though...Rumpelstiltskin. Can I keep my offspring? :p:

I'm guess you really want me to continue trying to explain myself since you replied to my post. Sorry, but I can't do that. I might've started this idiotic thread, but I can see that continuing to participate in it is useless. Besides, Dana already answered me. So this is my last post in this thread.

I always wondered about the cheats 'idkfa' and 'idfa' -- the nerds will know of what I speak.
'idfa' seemed like an odd invocation. Wouldn't 'idka' have been better?

Still, it's better than 'idspispopd'.
DanaC • Mar 17, 2010 2:44 pm
I would like an explanation of those terms please; as a semi-nerd (or probably more accurately a geek) I have no idea.

It was a very specific type of nerd that would remember. They're cheat codes for a very old video game.

Did you play Wolfenstein?
Pie • Mar 17, 2010 6:01 pm
My machine wasn't up to snuff when Wolfenstein came out, natch.
DanaC • Mar 17, 2010 6:14 pm
I didn't get into Doom so much. Played it a bit. Found it very atmospheric. But didn't get into it enough to warrant cheatcodes. But I was addicted to Wolfenstein. I remember before we got our first PC, we had an Amiga and used to go hang out in the new computer shop in Bolton. The manager was a really cool guy; very dry sense of humour and we basically hung out with him playing Wolfenstein on the display computer. We may or may not have also vanished with him to the carpark at lunchtimes to smoke spliffs...

Happy days.

From the moment i played Wolfenstein I knew I needed a pc. It took me another year and a half to actually acquire one ;P
