Google Chrome excellence noticed

Undertoad • Feb 25, 2010 11:23 am
I was writing a long post just now...

when suddenly a Flash application in a different tab became unresponsive, and took down pretty much all of Chrome.

Aw shit, I thought, I don't want to rewrite that post!

I made a screen capture of the 2/3rds of it that was still on my screen, and ended Chrome. Windows 7 did a nice job of noticing that the application was hung, and helpfully gave me a dialog box to end the program.

I decided that, with a pending Windows Update due, I should just reboot the entire system. When it came back I restarted Chrome. Chrome noticed that it had crashed, and asked whether I wanted all the tabs back. Nothing new there, Firefox will do that for you.

OK, I thought, might as well. But when the Cellar tab reappeared, my whole post was there with it. How awesome! How unexpectedly delightful! Great work, Google: if they want the tabs restored, chances are 99.9% they want the form data restored too.

I have switched to using Chrome as my primary browser.

One more item making me lean toward trying Chrome. UT, have you noticed anything else that makes Chrome standout from Firefox?
Undertoad • Feb 27, 2010 6:01 pm
Yes, the overall speed of it is remarkable.
Tulip • Feb 28, 2010 5:35 pm
Hmm.....Chrome is good, huh....hmmmm....
squirell nutkin • Mar 1, 2010 8:23 pm
Thought I'd try chrome again. It asked me if I wanted it to be my default browser. Sure, why not?

It didn't say it would erase firefox from my hard drive in the process and remove every trace of it.

I admit to being less than thrilled with that jack-booting approach.
jinx • Mar 1, 2010 8:28 pm
That's not very nice.... although I wish firefox did that to IE...

The girl uses chrome. I fear change.
lumberjim • Mar 1, 2010 8:29 pm
i thought it ran off of firefox?
squirell nutkin • Mar 1, 2010 8:43 pm
Like a borg or something? Maybe it just assimilated FF?
Undertoad • Mar 1, 2010 9:55 pm
It didn't do that, footer. It can't do that.
squirell nutkin • Mar 1, 2010 11:27 pm
Why are my FF icons gone and replaced with Chrome icons? Desktop, Start Menu, Program Files. All gone.
Undertoad • Mar 1, 2010 11:36 pm
It didn't delete anything. It just changed your file associations. If you run Firefox, it will ask you whether you want Firefox to be your default browser, and if you agree to that, everything will switch back.
Cicero • Mar 2, 2010 12:05 am
I just started getting used to google chrome. I like the news about the post as that has been a frustration for many years!

I tested firefox and it was quicker by a second. But that could have been for any variety of reasons. I think I'll test again! :)

On a second test chrome won....

Like I said, I can't run firefox because it isn't here anymore. It is not under program files, it doesn't show up when I search all my drives for it, and when I down loaded it again it didn't say "dude, FF is already installed."

It doesn't matter, I've been assimilated. It kept all my bookmarks, but it doesn't have a slider so I have to scroll down a lot of book marks. Probably time to clean house...
Undertoad • Mar 2, 2010 9:58 am
I'm tellin ya, that's just crazy talk. If Chrome deleted anything on people's systems, there would be screams of holy hellfire and it would be treated as a trojan horse. Maybe you found some bogus installation that somebody other than Google is handing out?
squirell nutkin • Mar 2, 2010 10:43 am
I don't know. After all, I'm just a squirell.
squirell nutkin • Mar 2, 2010 10:48 am
OK, I'm a tard. I forgot that when I had that whole computer wipeout a few months back I moved the contents of my C: drive to an external drive, L: and never got around to bringing all the program files back to C:

Undertoad • Mar 2, 2010 10:48 am
Do you use the bookmarks toolbar?
squirell nutkin • Mar 2, 2010 11:45 am
I've started putting my most accessed stuff up there. I've also got the "other bookmarks" icon with a folder chock full o' bookmarks.
Pete Zicato • Mar 2, 2010 12:41 pm
Ooooooo Google Chrome now has bookmark syncing, ad block, and flash block.

Might have to try it out now.
Undertoad • Mar 2, 2010 2:20 pm
One thing I enjoy doing is removing the title from the bookmarks, leaving just the favicon. This worked the same way in Firefox.

So I downloaded Chrome, I don't see any toolbar to access preferences to change this sort of thing, or I'm trying to find the magic spot to right click on to get a prefernces menu.:3_eyes:

Lots of help here:

Undertoad • Mar 4, 2010 2:28 pm
Beest, hit ctrl-B to show the bookmarks bar, then you can drag URLs into it, right click to create folders, right click on icons to set their name, etc.
lumberjim • Mar 4, 2010 2:39 pm
how do you get the favicons in there?
Undertoad • Mar 4, 2010 2:53 pm
I drag the link in, from the icon right to the left of it in the address bar, and then I right-click on it and edit it and erase the name part.
lumberjim • Mar 4, 2010 3:06 pm
I'm not getting any icon in the address bar, and when I erase the name, i am just left with a little white 'portrait' icon.

also, not so excellent is that you MUST put .com after your url or it ignores your ass.

Some sites don't have icons set up. If these do, try clicking on the icon to visit the page and see if the icon shows up then.
Pete Zicato • Mar 4, 2010 11:33 pm
I've been using it for a couple of days now with no problems. I've set it as my default browser.

i found it, in the top right theres spanner to access controls, it's white on grey so i didn't see it at first.

Theres not much to set though.

I want links I click on to open in a new tab, and it to switch to that tab as active.
lumberjim • Mar 5, 2010 12:08 am
i still like firefox better.

the only thing i've heard that makes chrome better is that it crashes better. tallest midget.
Pete Zicato • Mar 5, 2010 9:54 am
It also renders every page I visit faster than firefox. It is especially noticeable on complicated pages.
Pie • Mar 5, 2010 10:24 am
I can't get reasonable mouse gestures on Chrome. And I prefer my bookmarks as a sidebar (best use of space on a widescreen monitor, imo). So I'm still giving Firefox my business.

Yeah, I always run out of room on the screen north to south, never east to west, so I keep the crap at the top and bottom to an absolute minimum.
squirell nutkin • Mar 6, 2010 9:32 am
How do I make my bookmarks on the side?
Pie • Mar 6, 2010 10:32 am
You can't, on chrome.
On FF, you press ctrl+B or view->sidebar->bookmarks.
xoxoxoBruce • Mar 6, 2010 1:06 pm
IE9 will be introduced in a week or so.;)

Is that the version where all your financial info is automatically downloaded to hackers in Russia so you don't have to go through the trouble of having a virus infect your computer first?

I still have IE6

i have a couple sites i need for work that won't work with anything later.
xoxoxoBruce • Mar 7, 2010 11:07 pm
You're not the only one, much of corporate America does too.
Undertoad • Mar 8, 2010 9:23 am
It's thought to be at the center of the Chinese hacker attack a few months ago.

Avoid.
xoxoxoBruce • Mar 8, 2010 10:38 am
In a corporate environment you can't avoid. You haven't the ability to change anything, in most cases everything is locked down so you can't do anything but use what they give you.
squirell nutkin • Mar 19, 2010 10:25 am
I've been google assimilated.

That page hijacker virus I got only affect firefox.
fargon • Mar 19, 2010 12:02 pm
We switched to Chrome last week and love it. Firefox blows next to chrome.
Shawnee123 • Mar 19, 2010 12:29 pm
Ya gotta get Firefox, they said.
Firefox is the best browser ever, they said.

I may just go back to IE and be done with it. Let me know when the Browser Rebellion is over.
glatt • Mar 19, 2010 12:32 pm
I'm trying Chrome, and I like Firefox better, I think.

Shawnee123 • Mar 19, 2010 12:37 pm
yabbut, it's a pain in the ass for us dummies.

I actually downloaded Chrome some time ago. I may have gotten rid of it...my poor old computer is loaded to the gills.

I don't know if this is true or just my perception (I threw that in for classic ;) ) but it does seem like I find a lot more spyware (when I run spybot) on Firefox than I did when I used IE.

Is that possible or did I just not notice before?
Pie • Mar 19, 2010 12:41 pm
I can't get my friggin' root cert authority to be recognized in chrome. It's my own goddamn domain; I know the cert is legit. No matter what I do, or where I load the damn thing, I cannot get it accepted.

Chrome is dead to me. Dead.
Pete Zicato • Apr 1, 2010 3:31 pm
Chrome is pissing me off today. Flashblock is not blocking youtube links on cellar pages. Therefore every cellar page with a youtube embedded in it is taking forever to load.
Happy Monkey • Apr 1, 2010 7:36 pm
Did you accidentally tell it to always allow flash from this site?
Pete Zicato • Apr 2, 2010 10:35 am
No. I checked, but thanks for the suggestion.
Undertoad • Apr 2, 2010 12:59 pm
There are actually two different Flashblock plugins for Chrome... I found that I liked one, more than the other. You might have the same experience.

I could tell you which one I liked better, except that I can't, because they're both called Flashblock.

I love chrome but I still feel like I have to use firefox... Theirs some addons on firefox that I can't live without now :(. I also don't think I can "save tabs" when I close chrome which was one of the things I love the most out of firefox. Besides that, I find chrome is a better browser, almost never crashes and you barely lose anything when it does.
