Feb 16,2010: Used Light Bulbs

xoxoxoBruce • Feb 16, 2010 1:06 am
Continuing the crafty theme set by the bottle fence...
Assuming you're going all politically correct green, changing to compact fluorescent, or better yet LED light bulbs,
and of course recycling is foremost on your agenda, what are you going to do with the old bulbs?

Since you've screwed the pooch on the climate and you're snowed in, or in the southern hemisphere staying in out of the heat... get crafty. ;)

Coat hook, terrarium, mini-garden, the possibilities are endless.

Sure you can, just follow the instructions here, here, and here, until you pick up the skills to get really creative.

Oh, and don't forget to come back and post pictures of your triumphs*. :D

Haha! Nice work lumberjim. 1st post too, impressive
xoxoxoBruce • Feb 16, 2010 2:06 am
Aw, don't encourage him. :p:

I couldn't help it, you were basically begging for someone to do it by adding that footnote :) And who better than lumberjim

Back to the original post, I'd be a bit aprehensive about using a lightbulb for a coat rack, not the most durable of material. I like the little gardens tho.

Well if the bulb is filled with concrete, you'd really have to abuse it to break the glass.

The glass is broken and removed after the concrete hardens. That's step #6 in the directions.

I thought concrete expands as it dries. Guess not.

ETA: If that's not glass in the first pic, that's some shiny concrete.

If that were true, I'd think that concrete forms would blow out.
Gravdigr • Feb 16, 2010 1:05 pm
I've seen forms warped, but not 'blown out'. I've also seen concrete overflow the forms...I'm not trying to say anything...I'm just saying...

ETA: I'm not saying it expands much, but I wouldn't have thought a light bulb could've took it.

I understand that it actually contracts when it dries. Thats why they put joints in concrete to allow the concrete to crack in a neat, straight line at the joint when the volume of the concrete changes due to shrinkage.
Spexxvet • Feb 16, 2010 2:27 pm
heh heh - You said "shrinkage"
classicman • Feb 16, 2010 3:01 pm
Took you 17 mins??? You're slippin.
xoxoxoBruce • Feb 16, 2010 3:53 pm
If you'd rather make a terrarium, you could use one of those tiny frogs they sell at the supermarket... in the bags of mixed salad greens.
Pearcie (AUS) • Feb 16, 2010 6:03 pm
Ah, that's what that stuff is. I should have read the info in the link. Didn't realise it was filled with concrete :smack:

That is a spitfire not a motorcycle.
The note is asking for a mortorcycle -- so here it is.

I think the little light bulb terrariums are cute.I've been thinking of doing one in a great glass vase I have.

Oh and that little triumph is cute. I would LOVE to drive it.
Gravdigr • Feb 17, 2010 10:51 am
Triumph cars don't actually run and drive. They just kinda sit there. Like Joe Biden.

Those are actually pretty damn cool. I just might give that a try. If...a BIG if, I succeed, I'll post some pics.

We don't want no stinkin pictures of success! We want pictures of abject catastrophic failure!
