Ladysmith Black Mambazo

Just accompanied my son's class to see them perform at the Hill Auditorium in Ann Arbor this morning. Awesome, awesome performance. Their music always gives me goosebumps, not only because it reminds me of the horrors of apartheid which dominated the news when I was an impressionable teen, but also because they can SING. Great sense of humor too, what an excellent field trip. I just used to get dragged to the petting farm or local pond. I feel so privileged.

When Pilau was a wee pup, there was an advert on tv that used one of their songs: can't recall what the product was now. Every time it came on he would sit up and howl along with it. I eventually bought the album with that song on it; just to make him howl :P

Long since lost it....wonder if he'd still howl?

I thought this was about a new pet. Doesn't that sound like a pedigreed dog name?

I know about LBM, but only from the Graceland album. I've never heard them by themselves.

That's the one!

I just played it; but I am on my laptop with crappy laptop speakers. I'll have to plug proper speakers in. He didn't howl but he definately took notice. he was lay on the sofa snoozing. Suddenly pricked his ears up and looked round when it started.

I'll try again with proper speakers and see if he does anything.

I love that song.

I bought the Shaka Zulu cd, wore it out, and bought it again. Love every song on it.

Did I mention I saw them for nothing in an awesome, relatively small venue with fantastic acoustics, sound system and not a bad seat in the house? ;)

They sang that song, Jinx, I thought it a strange choice for a school performance but it's a wonderful song.

I'm jealous. I've never seen them.
I think it's even more fun to sing along when you don't know the language...

Are the same guys in the band as back then? or do they recycle and refresh like the globetrotters do?

oh man....those were good times.

we drank a lot of flavored coffee and wore flannel pants. played lots of hackey sack, and made Fimo beads.

'course we didn't have a dish washer, and hung our clothes to dry......

but grandma browns baked beans and tecmo bowl made up for that shit.

we bought our first Zeos computer, and banzai and bunyip were our kids....

love the early 90's.

I saw them with Simon at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, awesome show.

I love them, too.

I saw them perform live at Norristown State Hospital. I was friends with the guy who promoted the concert. He pulled me aside before the show and just said "don't leave."

I got to hang out with Ladysmith after the show, and got my CD signed.

It was an awesomely cool night.
