Getting Dentures

capnhowdy • Jan 11, 2010 7:54 am
Ok. I go to the dentist Wednesday at 1100 for my initial visit/consultation. I don't really know what to expect, and honestly I'm a little anxious about it.

I bet it's gonna be a bitch getting all my teeth pulled at once. I'm told I'll get a set of "immediate" or "temporaries" and go back in 4-6 weeks to get my permanent 'teeth'.:eyebrow:

Do you have dentures? What was your experience like? I'll keep you posted on my case and meanwhile I could use some input. Thank you in advance.
monster • Jan 11, 2010 10:01 am
Do you know for sure you need to get a full set of dentures? It's the thing I dread most, you have my complete sympathy.
limey • Jan 11, 2010 10:25 am
My grandad had this done and declared that it was the best thing - he wished he'd done it years ago.
Hope it all goes smoothly.
(juju - kissing someone without their "wallies" is a whole new experience!)

"wallies"? Never heard that one before.....

pl. wallies Broken pieces of china, earthenware marbles, a set of false teeth."

I remember wally being used to mean eejit when i were a lass
limey • Jan 11, 2010 3:06 pm
You mean "wally" - pronounced to rhyme with brolly.
I mean "wally" - pronounced to rhyme with Sally.

I really don't need top teeth, as they are fairly healthy. But they are a little crooked and yellowed from years of coffee and nicotine use and I just want to get a brand new, pearly white smile. Also I don't want to have to worry about cavities and toothaches any more. I have receding gums and some evidence of gum disease, also. Might as well make a clean sweep and get a fresh start, methinks.:D
skysidhe • Jan 11, 2010 10:38 pm
I hear people that have them like them very much and you will be asleep and awake before you even notice.

That's what my mam tells me anyway.
xoxoxoBruce • Jan 11, 2010 10:48 pm
It's mighty aggravating and sore (not painful, just sore) for a week or two. But then they settle in, and it'll take a little getting used to, but it's a quick learning curve. Your eating habits will change drastically, being extra careful and all, but slowly get back to close to what they were.

VERY IMPORTANT: You hear "soft foods" and you'll immediately think of bread, right? Bread is the hardest thing to chew in the entire fucking spectrum of human edibles. I shit you not, steak is easier to chew than bread.
monster • Jan 11, 2010 10:50 pm
OMFG I'm almost suicidal when I need a crown. I can't imagine volunteering to have all my teeth pulled to get dentures. You're way braver than me, cap'n.
xoxoxoBruce • Jan 11, 2010 10:55 pm
A root canal & crown? Had eight of them and nothing but trouble, now if a tooth bothers me, I can leave it at the dentist's office and pick it up later. I don't care how much he hurt it while I was gone. :haha:
monster • Jan 11, 2010 11:03 pm
hehe. no root canals yet for me....
xoxoxoBruce • Jan 11, 2010 11:04 pm
You're very fortunate... it sucks.
monster • Jan 11, 2010 11:09 pm
yup I live in fear of that too. I brush so well I alone could keep the toothbrush industry in business. My hygenist gets pissed off because there's nothing for her to do....
Juniper • Jan 12, 2010 2:06 am
Yikes, that terrifies me. My teeth aren't great, but I think I'll keep on patching them for a while. I inherited my mom's teeth (haha, not literally, just the tooth *quality* or lack thereof :)) and she had dentures at age 35. At least I've got her beat by a few years.

I do need some work done though. And a new dentist. The one I'm going to wasn't keen on replacing a couple of crowns that I know need it done - one front tooth is actually chipped. But he says "oh, they're fine . . . not worth the trouble." Fine, but he doesn't have to bloody live with them, does he?

Good luck, Capn.

Oh, and remember this for fun. Mom used to have this "trick" to make little ones giggle (or freak them out); she'd poke her tongue out from underneath her bottom teeth. Ew. LOL!
limey • Jan 12, 2010 3:48 am
And my [other] Grandad used to turn his teeth upside down and then smile at us for fun.
(but I bet none of this is really helpful, is it, Cap'n?)
capnhowdy • Jan 12, 2010 7:45 am
Actually, yes Limey! I am less and less anxious about it. I've learned that usually things aren't nearly as bad as we think they will be.

I asked the nurse during my phone interview if I would be awake during the procedure. I think she thought I was afraid to be put to sleep so she said they could give me an "awake" sedation. I told her I wanted to know NOTHING. She assured me that either way I wouldn't give a shit what the hell was going on.

On the positive: Should anything go wrong, god forbid, they can just call 911.... she'll probably be standing right next to me.
monster • Jan 12, 2010 8:16 am
Someone on the board I used to frequet got implants and they look fantastic. She wasn't too happy during the pulling and healing process but reckons it was worth it. My ceramics teacher swears by his implant too. He reckons he's going to get the next one with a sharp edge for cutting fishing line.

But I am looking forward to being able to cook his favorite foods without watching him try to eat in agony! It hurts me to just watch him suffer but bless his heart, he never tries to complain!
monster • Jan 12, 2010 10:11 pm
So.... When was the last time you saw the dentist, Cap'n? maybe you only need dentures at the bottom?

Good luck.
capnhowdy • Jan 12, 2010 10:17 pm
I've only gone to the dentist when I was in intolerable pain all my life. Now the tale is being told. Thanks to juju I have dental insurance now. So here we go!
monster • Jan 12, 2010 10:22 pm
right, so just may not be as bad as you think. good luck whatever happens
xoxoxoBruce • Jan 12, 2010 10:22 pm
They'll knock you out, it won't hurt a bit.
capnhowdy • Jan 13, 2010 8:15 am
I hope so. Today I may only get Xrays and scheduling.... dunno, but I leave in about 30 mins. Get back with y'all.
monster • Jan 13, 2010 8:22 am
Thinking of you, dude. It'll be fine no matter what, but I doubt they'll do much more than exam. x-ray and scheduling today, either.
jujuwwhite • Jan 13, 2010 3:25 pm
Just giving an update on Capn. We got to the dentist a few minutes early and Capn was very anxious but was handling it well. They got us in rapidly and of course got the paperwork out of the way. They took a mouthful of xrays and shuffled me out of the room to answer some more questions about the insurance. Anyway, in just a few minutes they determined he had 21 teeth that had to come out. They took out 9 of them today after doping him up on a handful of pills that should have put down a small elephant and then gassed him with gas. He did very well and never even closed his eyes during the procedure.

They packed his mouth with packing after putting some stitches in and sent him home with 2 prescriptions. 1 for pain meds and the other for something to keep down infection. He is now laying on the couch sleeping up a storm but for once in weeks, he doesn't seem to be in pain.

He still has several more weeks to go before they will remove the other 12 teeth and make his dentures but the ball is rolling for his recovery.

Thanks everyone for your love and support for the capn!

Kudos to juju for being there with me and being the best friend I ever had. I'm planning on going back to work in AM.... we'll see.

FTR: Dimerol works. Add a glass of Jim Beam on the rocks and I'm not only ok... I'm FINE!

Yep. The old jawbone IS sore. Hurts worse today than yesterday. But Jimmy Beam and demoral are my friends. I actually ate some chinese today at lunch. Lost a suture in the process but I HAD TO FUCKING EAT SOMETHING!
monster • Jan 15, 2010 9:28 pm
Just out of curiosity, cap'n, why didn't they do them all at one? too much trauma for the gums? Whoch 9 did they pull?
jujuwwhite • Jan 15, 2010 9:39 pm
For several reasons, monster. 1 yes was because of too much trauma all at once and the 2 reason was because it breaks the financial responsiblities down in several parts. Not that it would have mattered, we were going to get capn's teeth fixed even if I had to sell my big toe to accomplish it! Thank goodness for insurance. Another reason was because they want to be able to make the impressions for his dentures and only pull the last of the teeth when the dentures come in so that he won't have a 'toothless day'. They pulled all the back teeth on top and bottom and left all his front teeth until the next pulling session.
capnhowdy • Jan 15, 2010 9:48 pm
They pulled all the molars (jaw teeth) first. I will have a week to ten days for that to heal. When I go back next week to have the sutures removed they will make an impression of my gums with which to make my temporary dentures. When the temps are made, I will then have the remaining teeth pulled and walk (or be carried) out with dentures in my mouth. I will wear these until my mouth is completely healed and my gums have shrunken. Then I will return for new impressions and have my permanent dentures made. Sheesh! A long process and a painful one. Also about 4000 bucks out of me and juju's pocket aside from what our dental plan covers. Guess I'll have to switch from McAllans scotch to the Glen Livet for a while.... good thing we both have good jobs.;)

The clock is ticking. It has been a long road, but this morning at 1000 hrs., I go for my final surgery. This evening I will be wearing my new "immediate" dentures. I will wear those for six months and then go back for more impressions to have my "permanent" set made. Then I will use the first set as spares, like when I feel like whooping somebody's ass or something.

Keep your fingers crossed for me AND our checkbook, please. Will try to post this evening if I'm not still too fucked up. (Like I've never posted fucked up before)....

jujuwwhite • Mar 9, 2010 6:57 am
Capnhowdy did real good yesterday during his surgery. He did come home with some real pretty white teeth but for several hours he looked liked a vampire after a real tasty eating episode. He would try to talk or open his mouth and blood would just pour out both sides of his mouth and he was still numb from the drugs and couldn't even feel it. But thankfully he didn't bleed to death, it finally slowed stopped and he ended up getting a fairly good sleep.

We go back this morning for his first alignment.

Oh, and bless his heart, he ate peach ice cream last night for the first time in several years and said it sure was good!!
xoxoxoBruce • Mar 9, 2010 11:09 am
Glad to hear he soldiered through. I can remember driving myself home from the hospital with a mouth full of stitches, new teeth, cotton and blood. I stopped at the drug store to get two prescriptions filled and the woman behind the counter wanted all kinds of information. Trying to answer her questions without leaking all over the counter was impossible. :haha:

How are you feeling this morning, Cap'n?
capnhowdy • Mar 10, 2010 9:13 am
Better now, since my meds have kicked in. I made my first wrong decision last night in that I decided to sleep wothout the teeth. I slept like a bear except for the occasional cottonmouth attack, which I quickly treated with the recommended hot water/salt/vinegar rinse. But what happened was my gums swelled up some and when I put my teeth in this morning it was a near tear experience. I won't do that again.

And of course, as with all surgeries, the soreness doesn't hit you till a day or two later. I am thankful for four things mainly this morning:
1) hydrocodone
2) alloted sick days
3) Jim Beam

and last but not least....MY PEARLY WHITES!

Thanks for checking, Monnie. Hope you are well this morning.:)
