We got bageled

dar512 • Jan 4, 2010 4:25 pm
Is this a local phenomena, or does it exist elsewhere? Instead of egging a house or TPing, kids get bags of leftover bagels from behind the local bagel place and pitch them at your yard etc.

It's only funny until you have to pick them up. We had a 30 gal. garbage can full of bagels and part of another at the curb this morning.

A neighbor saw teenage boys getting back into their car as they drove off.
glatt • Jan 4, 2010 4:28 pm
When did you get bageled? New Year's Eve?
dar512 • Jan 4, 2010 4:43 pm
No, the night before - New Years Eve Eve - so to speak.
Clodfobble • Jan 4, 2010 5:03 pm
I've never heard of that. But I have to say, I'd still prefer it over toilet paper or eggs.
Qice • Jan 4, 2010 5:26 pm
Never heard of that before - in NM they still use t.p. - wouldn't a bagel cause damage if it was stale?
dar512 • Jan 4, 2010 5:34 pm
These were stale only in that they were end-of-day bagels.

What did you do to deserve that, then? confiscate their iPods?
TheMercenary • Jan 4, 2010 8:35 pm
I think you must have pissed off the Jewish Street.
Spexxvet • Jan 4, 2010 8:37 pm
Dar, if you're Jewish, it makes it a hate crime. Call the ACLU.

The girls haven't dated much, so I don't know many teenage boys. I can't see how I could have pissed one off.

I do wonder, though, if they were somehow showing off for one of the darlets.

No, not Jewish. Not even Jewish-ish.
Elspode • Jan 4, 2010 10:36 pm
You know, if you're gonna throw stuff at someone's place, at least throwing something that ends up feeding the birds is sorta Green.

Where else is this fad going on? Will this result in bakeries having to monitor their stale goods receptacles?

I wonder when the first lawsuit will hit... :headshake

I'd guess that this is the answer, myself. In my day, toilet-papering someone's house was like pulling their hair on the playground because you liked them. Every once in awhile it was because the kid was extremely unpopular, but usually it was the cheerleaders doing it to the star quarterback, etc. I'd say it's even likely that one of the darlets already knows who did it.
Juniper • Jan 4, 2010 10:52 pm
I wish someone would bagel my house. I could use the free dog and chicken food.
xoxoxoBruce • Jan 5, 2010 5:02 am
Gather 'em up, donate 'em to the local soup kitchen, and take a tax deduction for 2009, since it was new years eve, eve. ;)
TheMercenary • Jan 5, 2010 6:06 am
Take em to the local pond. That is some serious fish food.

I'm just shocked at how many bagels are wasted a day!
I'd seriously be considering a bit of dumpster diving if I lived in your house Dar. Bagels for breakfast, lunch and dinner!

Then again, if I lived in your house you'd probably be kind enough to let me eat with the family...

There's always room for one more plate.

At least is was truely biodegradable. The birds would have had a feast.

That was my first thought. And I thought we'd leave them out for a while.

Then Mrs. Dar reminded me that it would also feed the raccoons. I've already had to deal with one raccoon in the attic this year, I'm not going to fight another. We decided to pick them up.
TheMercenary • Jan 5, 2010 9:20 pm
Point made. But maybe after you gathered them up you could take them to the local park or something. Just thinking outsid the box here.... I don't know.

I was thinking exactly the same thing. ;)

Whenever I go out to eat, I collect everyone's leftovers and bring them home for the chickies. When I have dinner at a friend's house, I do the same thing. Party? Ditto.

Yeah, it's a little weird but my friends have all gotten used to it by now, and some even save their leftovers and give them to me when I come visiting. What do they get out of it? Yummy, delicious, healthy farm fresh eggs for free. :)

My parents, on the other hand, actually go dumpster diving for their birds.

No, really! There's one (independent) local grocery near them that tosses any veggies/fruits that might possibly be thinking about going bad three days from now. (Most groceries won't give away or throw away their less-than-perfect goods - they claim it's a liability issue). So, every now and then my 83-year-old parents grab flashlights and go there to sift through the store's dumpsters after closing.

They bring home stuff you wouldn't believe was thrown away. Beautiful lettuces and cabbage and greens with a just few slightly wilted leaves on the outside.

It's such a waste.... well, except when mom and dad go retrieve it!

When I lived in Port Orchard, WA we raised birds of many type - we cut a deal with the day-old bread store in town and they would save us the bread that could no longer be sold - for around 5 dollars a barrel - it was quite a good deal. We'd mix it in with the grain we fed. Possibly some of you birders could look at your local bread shops?
Bullitt • Jan 6, 2010 5:56 pm
Just be glad it wasn't 40 boxes of instant mashed potatoes on a dew-ey night.

I know for a fact that the local Safeway donates all their day-old pastries/breads to local food banks. I'll ask around at other, smaller stores, though.

Good suggestion!

Whenever I visit a small convenience store nearby, I ask about their old veggies/fruits, and on occasion I've been lucky enough to arrive just after they've sorted through the displays and taken the yucky things out. Unfortunately, I'm not the only one who's discovered this wealth of chicken food - occasionally they tell me "Oh! Someone else was just here for the same thing, and took it all!" I'll have to ask the storekeeper if they toss out old bread, as well.

A friend of my Dad was a supermarket manager. Three times a week I'd fill the pickup with fruit, veggies and baked goods for the pigs. ;)

My one sister had already been killed in an automobile accident, in 1953.

Update: Right around midnight on Friday, we got fireworks(ed). The kids yelled something right before setting it off, but I didn't catch it.

Found the tube by the street Sat morning. It still had a price tag on it - $9.75.

They're putting a lot of work into this and not conveying much.
