2010 New Years Resolutions

TheMercenary • Dec 30, 2009 10:03 pm
Ok. I have a few private ones, but my public one is that I am going to try to read more. In the last few days I have been getting up at 445 or 5 am instead of 530 or 545, just to read one of my 3 or 4 books I have on the go. How about you? I want to keep them attainable.
glatt • Dec 30, 2009 10:19 pm
I have only one resolution, and it's to get a physical. I'm 42 and haven't had one in 3-4 years. They are just not convenient. But I should be getting them every year or so. That's my resolution. We just switched insurance providers too, so I have to find a new doctor, I think. Hassle.
SamIam • Dec 30, 2009 11:10 pm
Get more exercise and keep my apartment cleaner. I've been wanting to walk more, but its difficult with all the snow and ice covered streets we have around here at the moment. I guess I could use the enforced indoor time to get into cleaning. Alas, I usually opt for a book instead. ;)

Update my IT certs and get at least 1 new one...and lose some weight.
kerosene • Dec 31, 2009 12:00 am
Mine is pretty generic...stop eating sweets and lose 40 lbs.
piercehawkeye45 • Dec 31, 2009 3:40 am
Be more organized and stop procrastinating. I have already made a "to do list" of goals I want to accomplish and deadlines I need to complete so hopefully by looking it over and set daily and weekly goals on a consistent basis I will constantly remind and remotivate myself to get stuff done.
limey • Dec 31, 2009 4:48 am
Exercise.
xoxoxoBruce • Dec 31, 2009 6:14 am
Try not to die.
limey • Dec 31, 2009 7:12 am
Clutter-weeding ...
(rather than attempting to have a big clear-out, or even to clear one room, I plan to sometimes pay attention to a single shelf, or drawer, or equally manageable-sized spot and identify what I can throw out, or give to charity shop, or sell on ebay and action that decision immediately).
capnhowdy • Dec 31, 2009 7:19 am
Get rid of all the junk I've accumulated over the years and repaint my kitchen and bathroom. And get on a regular exercise program.

Imma let you finish, but mine is to try to be more mindful.
DanaC • Dec 31, 2009 8:06 am
A similar one to Limey; also to try and work on my thesis more regularly than I have been doing.
classicman • Dec 31, 2009 9:49 am
Create the time to finish the remaining home projects that got put on hold. 2 bathrooms and new french doors to replace the old crappy slider.

Oh and if I'm really good, I'll clean the basement - Ha! (like that'll ever happen)

I'm with you on that one...being more mindful is my number one priority.

I am currently reading "Wherever You Go, There You Are" by Jon Kabat-zinn. If you ignore the references to buddha/buddhism, and focus on the practice of meditation, then the idea is you will be more mindful by living in the now. My yougest son calls this paying attention. Yep.
Shawnee123 • Dec 31, 2009 11:03 am
I vow to not kill any hobos this year. Well, that's my plan anyway.

I don't make resolutions. If I want to change something, I just do it. It's not one day a year...then you're just mad at yourself for not doing what you said you'd do (clean my closet, lose 10 pounds...)

Every year, for me, it's the same thing, and I always keep to it because it's easy to do: I remember to acknowledge someone who has gone above and beyond typical duties in service to others. For example: waiter was great. Waiter's boss will get a comment card on waiter's behalf. Simple, easy, and it means a lot to waiter. I know how good it makes me feel when I get such compliments from students.

"you must be the change you wish to see in the world"

Bah, there was a cashier at the supermarket who was just fabulous. Friendly, fast, efficient, packed bags logically, just great. So I sent her boss an email telling him how good she was... she got promoted. :(
Shawnee123 • Dec 31, 2009 11:37 am
HAhahhahahahaha...no good deed goes unpunished. ;)

Bravo to you, Bruce. (for the 'who' too) :)
BrianR • Dec 31, 2009 2:15 pm
I, too, have a few private ones. But for public consumption, this is the year of change for me.

1) stop smoking!
2) maintain weight
3) get a new wardrobe by end of year
4) get moved to a better house
5) get rid of wife's clutter!
capnhowdy • Jan 1, 2010 9:24 am
To not get as fucked up as I did last night till next year. Ouch.
Sundae • Jan 1, 2010 9:56 am
Same as ever.
Lose weight, stop drinking, get out more.
To be living in a place of my own before summer.
To have a job - even if it's part time - by the end of the year.
To go see my friend in Yorkshire. Or Limey! Or both.

Short term goals - volunteer at the Queens Park Centre and get pottery sessions in return. I have to make a better money-box than the one I did when I was getting it free as part of occupational therapy. By mistake I made a cat demon instead of a money box. Diz is terrified of it at any rate, so I figure that's the most logical conclusion. If he sees it he will not come into the room. Anyway it's not fit for purpose - I wanted to use it to save £1 coins, but after it was glazed the slot is too small! It's not worth it for smaller denominations as it's not a large item and will have to be smashed open.

Start a new photo album (a physical one).
I've got 40 free prints via a website I've just signed up to. I like to have them together in a book. After all, I already have 4!

Oh and go along to a meeting of the singing group I have a flyer for. But that's a scary-big step.

Do it! You'll be awesome.
morethanpretty • Jan 1, 2010 11:49 am
1: eat healthier and keep to an exercise routine
2: get out more and have some fun
3: finish my associates, start planning for the next step
4: talk to my grandma and uncle in Florida more (starting today by calling and wishing them a happy new year)
5: find time to volunteer at the SPCA

End goal of all these steps: gain self-confidence!

Seconded!

Happy New Year everyone!

Don't forget the Rose Bowl. Go BUCKS!

@mtp: great goals. Get that degree! You'll figure it out, you're one of the most self-aware young women I know. :)
Cloud • Jan 1, 2010 5:56 pm
eat less; take care of my health generally; spend less/save more money

dance every day!
Cicero • Jan 1, 2010 7:44 pm
Resolution #1....Make no resolutions....;)
morethanpretty • Jan 2, 2010 2:45 pm
Thank you for the nice comment Shaw!
I think its very good that you make sure to compliment those who go above and beyond. I try similarly to be polite and patient. If I'm in a line, I don't let the wait get to me and say my please and thank yous. I also use "ma'am" and "sir" no matter the age of the person I'm talkin to, I realize some find it a title for "old" people, but its really just a term of respect. If a person expresses that they don't like it, I do my best to stop, but its really ingrained.

I have to say I really like Cloud's resolution to dance everyday. As some might remember, I do not dance. Maybe I should add to my list, "Learning to overcome my phobia of public humiliation and dance in public."
Cloud • Jan 2, 2010 2:47 pm
dancing is life!

Try to make it through 2010 without any of the following mishaps:

1. Heart attack
2. Stroke
3. Going crazy
4. Getting audited
5. Road rage
6. Purchasing Depends

If I can avoid all that then it should be a pretty decent year.
Qice • Jan 4, 2010 1:13 pm
Hike more
smoke less
travel more
lurk less

1. Get my exercise routine back up which will help me drop a few pounds and hopefully overcome my recent need for blood pressure meds which I have never needed before!

2. Drink a little less. Perhaps wine on the weekends and not every night. Well... perhaps. See #1.

3. Get my photo business back up and running and making money.

4. Visit Mongolia, Brazil, Australia, Tahiti and New Zealand. See #3.

5. Get my trigger finger operated on cause it's f--kin up my hand.

6. Make Platinum Elite on Continental again. See #4

7. Get my genealogy program caught up with a back log of entries.

8. Learn Silverfast, my scanning software. See #3.

9. Go back to Alaska and complete my book on the espresso stands of Alaska. See #3

Those are exactly mine too, except my list stops at #2.

I try to do this, but I admit it's patchy. But I got great service again today from someone at the ice arena, and I remembered you saying this and so took the time to track down her boss and email them in praise of the good worker. thanks, shaw.

The last time I praised someone for doing a good job, going above and beyond ... they turned out to be a pedophile that got caught by Perverted Justice.

Kind of screwed up my self-image as being a good judge of character.

We have a shared New Year's Resolution at work.

It's very straightforward.

"Screw it."

It's actually the boss', But he lets me borrow it.
