It's a girl!

Cloud • Dec 9, 2009 2:10 pm
Baby girl born to BD#2 at midnight this morning! 6 lbs, 9 oz., at home, with the birthing tub, with an hysterical 10 y.o. big brother watching. Oy.

No name or pics yet, but mom and baby are fine. The are thinking of "star" names, but it might be a while.

Makes the total count 6 granddaughterclouds and 2 grandsonclouds!

Whew! Glad that's over!
Cicero • Dec 9, 2009 2:17 pm
Omg! Another one!

Congratulations!! :)
ZenGum • Dec 9, 2009 5:09 pm
Congratulations!

A star name could be good, but not "Cancer", ok?
Cloud • Dec 9, 2009 5:18 pm
cara, cassiopeia, astrid, stella, lots of "m" names (which they don't want) -- there are lots to choose from and I have NO idea what it will be. Am curious!

black hole would be pretty bad, too.....

Congrats again Cloud!
Cloud • Dec 10, 2009 12:04 am
gets tiring after a while, doesn't it? Fortunately, I have only two daughters; and I think, they're done.

srsly, I hope they're done!
jinx • Dec 10, 2009 12:09 am
We still get newsletters from the birth center where I had Ripley, and they list the names of all the babies born that month. There are some interesting names on there.... [/understatement]
skysidhe • Dec 10, 2009 12:23 am
congratulations cloud. You are a beautiful grandmother of 8!

2 born in December.(?) What a wonderful Christmas gift.

Not for them, poor things, combined gifts forever unless they choose a religion/non-religion that doesn't exchange gifts this time of year.....

forgot to pass on my good wishes, cloud. Hope all new parents and babies doing well.
Clodfobble • Dec 10, 2009 10:10 am
Just before Christmas is still better than just after. Mr. Clod is in the first few days of January, so instead of combining gifts relatives would only think of Christmas first and then just totally forget about his birthday.
kerosene • Dec 11, 2009 6:16 pm
Same for my husband...his is a few days after, but I like it that way, so I can get good deals on stuff for his birthday. Everyone else just forgets.
DanaC • Dec 11, 2009 6:20 pm
Huge congrats Cloud:)

I think we finally have a name for the little girl born one week ago. No pics yet, though!

Auryn Midnight V___

"Auryn" is the magical talisman owned by the Child Empress in the Neverending Story. "Midnight" because she was born at midnight!

So, I have -- Orion and Auryn born the same week!
classicman • Dec 17, 2009 10:17 pm
thats wonderful!
Sundae • Dec 18, 2009 7:59 am
How is Auryn pronounced?
I read the book, but blanked the film out of my mind because it didn't match up (yes, even as a twelve year old I was a literary snob!)

LOVE Midnight as a middle name!
Reminds me of Midnight Is a Place by Joan Aitken. And that is a remarkable children's book.
Clodfobble • Dec 18, 2009 9:23 am
This is how they pronounce it in the movie, anyway (technically I guess I should put a spoiler alert, just in case someone's never seen it...):

Sundae • Dec 18, 2009 10:21 am
Ah. In my head it was always OW-rin. ORR-rin is close though.
I guess accents make a difference anyway (Chandler in the UK was never pronounced in the same way it was on Friends)

Ta.

And there she is giving sound advice again!

It isn't?
Sundae • Dec 18, 2009 11:28 am
Well everyone I know says Charndler in conversation i.e "Charndler is my favourite character"
But on-screen the Friends say Chan-dler.

Charn as in charm. Chan as in ran.
Undertoad • Dec 18, 2009 11:41 am
SG I'm sure they say "Charnd-luh", right? They don't do the American hard R at the end.

Because I was looking at it, and at first I thought, well "Charnd-ler" is wrong, because there's no R in "Chandler". So it'd be wrong to just put an R in there. But then I realized, there IS an R in "Chandler". But it's at the end, where, ironically, the English don't pronounce an R.
Sundae • Dec 18, 2009 11:55 am
Quite right UT.
It's always tricky trying to get pronunciations right via spelling. But Charnd-luh is probably closest to what we say.
jinx • Dec 18, 2009 11:58 am
We should keep a running list of things we need to hear you say, and you could occasionally youtube them... just an idear.
Sundae • Dec 18, 2009 12:25 pm
I have suggested it before... I'd certainly be up for it!
But I would need someone to return the favour.

There are plenty of things I would like to hear - especially rhyming words (which do or don't according to accent!)
And I'm still intrigued by "orange". Monnie suggests there is another way to pronounce it, but it just seems wrong to me.

then that's a North/South thing, I think.
kerosene • Dec 18, 2009 6:15 pm
Orange is like or-indge.
Cloud • Dec 18, 2009 8:37 pm
ha! it's ORR-in. My daughters think it's very cool that they had their babies in one week, and we have Orion and Auryn. Anyway, finally got pics. In the first one (assuming my post comes out right) you can see the "birthing tub" in the background; also the fancy sling for which I purchased a fancy fleece for the baby. that's the proud mama and big brother.

and I say "arrrrng" which I know is wrong, but just have always said it that way.
monster • Dec 18, 2009 8:48 pm
OK I videoed Hebe saying "orange" tonight. I'll get n posting it...

OK, so Brits say ough (as in cough withouth the "f" sound on the end) - ringe

My kids (with their midwestern twang) say aawrnge. Dear Brits, we were so happy to move from where we were as our 3yo started to show signs of a Brummie accent ...only to end up in the "Midwest", whose accent has about the same appeal to the residents of the rest of the country! Karma, what a bitch!
Sundae • Dec 19, 2009 6:47 am
Monster you're qute right re North/ South. I hadn't thought of that.

Now I would say that we say orange as Case wrote it - OR-ringe.
But I look forward to the Hebe version.

I was having a bowl of basil & tomato soup the other night and watching the US version of Queer as Folk. Debbie was making something and mentioned both basil and tomato. Bay-sil and tom-ay-to. I couldn't stop saying to to myself. That's what I call that soup now :)
monster • Dec 19, 2009 2:38 pm
and you know, I read it as baysill and tomaydo ;) we're being assimilated :borg:

Inflatable home-birthing pool. Check.
Baby sling/swing. Check
Child named after magical talisman. Check.

Third generation hippies. CHECK!

Love you.
Cloud • Dec 19, 2009 9:15 pm
Haha. Oh, you betcha! BD#2 is an even bigger hippie than me, if that's possible, and born 30 years too late.

I got her some Nag Champa "Midnight" incense in commemoration.
kerosene • Dec 20, 2009 5:15 pm
Beautiful baby, Cloud. Congratulations!

I don't get it, monster. Is it like Off-ringe? Hmm. I have only ever heard one pronunciation of orange and it sounded like O-winge. Which sounds funny to me. Hebe says it the way I do, from what I can tell...just or-indge.

SG, it is baysil and tomayto. :)
Cloud • Dec 20, 2009 5:19 pm
orange only has 1 syllable for me--does it have 2 for you?

and thanks, Case, and everyone who's made complimentary remarks about my progeny. Babies are . . . . red, wrinkly, and only cute to their immediate family. They make 'em that way on purpose, you know . . .
monster • Dec 20, 2009 6:41 pm
beest's "orange" was only slightly merkinized. hell yes it has two syllables, cloud!

thank goodness your grandbabies aren't at all awrnj.

squirrel and mirror have two syllables too ;)
kerosene • Dec 21, 2009 12:00 am
Yes, orange has 2 syllables. So does Mirror, but sometimes I hear "mirr-ah" from my step kids who live most of the time in south Texas. Squirrel has one syllable for me.
classicman • Dec 21, 2009 1:10 pm
skwerl
ZenGum • Dec 21, 2009 8:17 pm
That's a fun one to get Japanese people to try to pronounce.

Skwiwoo.
Cloud • Dec 21, 2009 9:12 pm
so, BD#2 tells me they are pronouncing Auryn as "RRRR-n" rather than OR-n. Like awe. and that they had a "discussion" about it.

kind of like arange and oringe
jinx • Dec 21, 2009 9:31 pm
I'm lost. How many syllables does it have?
monster • Dec 22, 2009 12:24 am
meeer and skwerrrl

mih-roar and skwih-rell in real English
