Woohoooooooooo! :biggrinje I know you northerners are rolling are eyes and saying UGH! But we southeastern Texans like it cuz we only get it only for a few hours once a year, if even!. :D Last year, we got enough snow to build a snowman. I grew up in Beaumont - there's a picture of me (somewhere - I think mom's still got it) building a snowman on the front lawn. Only time it ever snowed when I lived there. So, if it snows pretty much every year there in Houston....

OMG. Spexx is right. Global Cooling!

Yeah, we got about 15 minutes of snow this afternoon too. Very unusual. Nothing stuck, but it was fun to watch.
wolf • Dec 4, 2009 6:06 pm
They put the salt bucket out on the porch at work and the salt spreader is chained to the fence, so I have hopes.
Tulip • Dec 4, 2009 8:13 pm
Nopes, not snowing every year in Houston yet. Just last year and this year. Let's see if it snows again next year, perhaps then we should start worrying. :p Last year, it snowed a few hours. This year, it snowed half a day. The ground was still wet so only leaves and plants got covered in white. That was enough for us to scrape the snow off and had a snowball fight. :D And someone made a tiny snowman. :p However, I heard where I live had little snow. Other parts of town had much more snow, and little south of us, like Pasadena, was covered white by midday. Got some pix. Will post later after I've resized them. Gonna hit the shower and watch Monk's series' finale first. :D

El Paso got maybe an inch and everybody panicked! And when the sun came up and melted it all away, they still were nervous enough to keep on crashing into each other.

It's silly, really. They are talking about blizzards and white-outs. They've never SEEN either! I could show em pictures though. I have one of my car buried over it's roof in snow. Somewhere. I have more of my truck plowing it's way through snow that would PARALYZE this town.

I was describing local's reactions and showing a few pictures to a friend in Minneapolis and she called El Pasoans "wussies" for freaking out over what she calls "flurries". I'm with her. This wasn't enough to even make me consider breaking out the snowshovel. Why I packed it along from PA is still a mystery to me.

Its so dry here, we don't get all that much snow. We do get very cold temperatures, though. Four degrees this morning. Its supposed to be a balmy 13 degrees this evening when we have our annual festival of lights. A friend is on one of the floats, so I promised that I'd come see her. BRRR! At least downtown is only about 8 blocks long, so the suffering wil be limited. Then tomorrow we're supposed to get snow - probably a couple of inches or so. At least it will be dry cold - not that humid stuff you get in the East. :tux:

Well, it happened. Actual snow. And, much to my surprise, no call from the nuthouse telling me that they were sending the ambulance to pick me up.

Probably because I told the boss that my plans for the snowstorm included making her maple walnut fudge. And butterscotch. And some chocolate chip cookies. My emergency trip to the supermarket after midnight the other night included 10 pounds of sugar, just in case.

The pic is from sometime this afterlunch. There are several more inches on the ground. I love the quiet.

Oh, I cooked bacon too, and had a breakfast burrito.

Wolf, I'm just curious, but what are the flags for? Based on Mercenary, I'm assuming they're prayer flags? So, Wolf and Mercenary, why would a person hang prayer flags? Are they supposed to be good luck, mean something, or just decorations?
wolf • Dec 23, 2009 11:18 am
They are Tibetan Prayer Flags.

They are supposed to ward against negative energy, provide blessings.

Given what has happened to Tibet, which is covered in the things, I have my doubts on how well they work.

In my case, they are both pretty and spiritual.

It snowed all last night and this morning. Another four or five inches of snow. I went out onto the lane out back, with Pilau, around midnight. It was strange and beautiful with the orange glow of the streetlights and the mist starting to form and everywhere soft with snow.

By the time I took Pilau for his midday walk today, the snow was thick and a dense fog had descended on the village. Everything was white and grey. Skeletal trees, which yesteday had seemed so shockingly stark against the white, were wraithlike and indistinct; branches bleeding into the fog, like they were a part of it. Villagers, muffled and faceless, appeared and disappeared like spirits. Even the houses seemed insubstantial; fading within moments of passing. A ghost village. We are here and then we sink back into the fog.

And.....it's snowing again.

We've had light snow (a couple of inches) for the last few days. Now we've had another heavy snowfall. And it's still snowing. Airports in Yorkshire and Greater Manchester are closed; about 250 schools across West Yorkshire are closed, and we have a national grit shortage. Only the big roads are being gritted now, and even those with limited success.

Thank Goodness my Bro and his family came home yesterday. They'd have been stuck if they'd been travelling back today.

Pretty much the whole of the North of England is covered, along with Wales. It's moving into the midlands now, and expected to head south across the day. They're predicting 10 inches in some places. I'd say we're currently at around 6-8 inches in my village and the snow is falling thick.

A few days before Christmas our council ordered more salt, it never arrived. We've used over twelve and half tonnes since the beginning of December; 8,600 tonnes across the Christmas period alone. That's more than we used across the whole winter last year and that was itself a record year.

Apparently Government may step in and organise salt for the worst hit councils.

How we have managed to run out so comprehensively I'll never know: we have a salt mine less than ten minutes drive away from my home! has the mine itself run out? I have no idea.

Really hoping this is over by the 11th. I booked non-refundable rooms at the travelodge in order to get the discount (took it down to £29 a night, which for London is ridiculously low). If I can't get down there because of trains being disrupted I'll lose £150! I think. I may check, it maybe that they only count it as non-refundable if it's a choice to cancel, as opposed to being prevented by adverse weather.

Yup, kids had a 2 hour delay. Fortunately my 1st class is at 10:30 and it doesn't bother me.

What I wanna know, though, is this: why is it that when the kids have a delay like this, they're always running late, when on a normal day they're on time?
Sundae • Jan 5, 2010 2:59 pm
FINALLY!
We've been waiting all day, watching the window and watching the weather reports that show snow in just about every other damned place in the UK...

Just checked and we finally have some of our own!
Tiny, weeny flakes. But it's settling. A dusting right now, but some parts of the county will get up to 20cms! We won't (protected by the Chiltern Hills) but I'd settle for 10...

I know, I know, everyone moans about it. But I don't. I've never complained about snow, only the lack of it.
What have I got to worry about? I'm here, warm, have nowhere I particularly need to go, all bills paid up already, have pies for tomorrow night's tea. Sorted.

And regardless of snowfall, our local shop will be open, so even emergency items can be purchased (for us and Grandad, whose idea of an emergency item is a packet of Jaffa Cakes). It's a brisk 5 minute walk, and Mr Shah would open even in the event of a nuclear winter.

This is probably the last snowfall(s) I don't have to worry about getting to work, the cost of heating, having enough food in, general house maintenance issues like frozen pipes etc. So I'm going to enjoy myself!
DanaC • Jan 5, 2010 3:17 pm
Just occurred to me ... I probably meant 10 cm not 10 inches... wtf do I know. I never was much cop at measurements.

Just got back from Ma's. The road down to her house (very steep and only tarmac halfway down after that it's cobbles) is strewn with abandoned cars. Slewed to a halt at odd angles at the sides of the road. Three of them appear to have crunched into each other.

I like snow until I have to leave my house. Particularly when I have to leave it with Pilau :P It's cold on this hill at the best of times, add snow and an icy wind it leaves your cheeks feeling like you've been at them with a brillo pad.

There is still though, even with all this conscious dislike, a little part of me that rejoices when I wake up and see white through my window. before my brain has caught up and done the maths (dog-walk-cold etc) the ten year old that's hiding in my head shouts out excitedly.
Carruthers • Jan 5, 2010 5:33 pm
Well, that note from my doctor excusing me from snow meant bugga all in the great scheme of things.

I'm looking after a load of horses for just over two weeks and, pausing only to strap tennis racquets to my feet, I struggled up the road to minister to my equine charges for the final time today at 8pm. Frozen pipes, taps and troughs coupled with heavy rugs, cold and hungry horses and the general embuggerance factor brought about by snow, does not make me warm to my task......... if you see what I mean.
Chap that usually looks after them departed these shores with his wife yesterday morning for warmer climes.

I am not 'appy.:(

Carruthers
DanaC • Jan 5, 2010 5:51 pm
That sounds rotten Carruthers.

On a much smaller scale, my bro and his family spent the past week in sunny climes leaving Mum to ensure ferrets and assorted other wildlife were ok. She scrambled up wooden steps into the back garden (everything round here is on a hill) the day before yesterday to discover that the baby ferrets were out of food and all the water bottles (for young and old ferrets) had frozen solid. Cue:multiple trips up and down slippy iced up wooden steps in the dark with torch

Oh, and apparently they all came back yesterday to discover three of the five fish had pegged it. Mart forgot to leave the central heating on a timer, and they'd frozen to death. Or so Mart thinks. Thank God he left the tortoises' basking lamp on a timer.

Amble-Scramble and Sally the greyhound are still at the kennels, because they couldn't there to pick then up. Got so far and the roads became too dangerous (somewhere up on the moors), and the woman who runs the kennel appears to have lost her mobile phone. So haven't been able to check on them. They got the cats back, but only just. The road they had to drive to get to the cattery was closed about half an hour after they pulled off it.

Poor Amber, I hope they're keeping her warm. She has very bad joints these days.

Elspode • Jan 5, 2010 6:36 pm
We've got between 9 and 11 inches frozen on the ground right now, and we are forecast to get another 3 to 5 tomorrow, then the temps are going to fall below zero with winds gusting up to 40 mph.
DanaC • Jan 5, 2010 7:07 pm
Met office has predicted up to a foot and a half in the South by morning (Sundae will be pleased!) and apparently they've been panic buying provsions in some parts of the South after predictions that the freeze could last several days. Coming so soon after the last lot, this is now the longest cold snap in the UK for 30 years.

They said the snow would move South, I was kind of hoping that meant that it would move South and leave the North behind, but I just let Pil out for his last trip and it was snowing again. Bleh. Don't mind de-snowballing the dog after his daily walk. Do mind having to de-snowball him after every venture outside.

DanaC • Jan 6, 2010 6:44 am
I can believe it Bri. I have to put on boots just to let the dog out for a quick widdle. The snow comes up to my calves. It's a long time since I've seen snow this deep; even up here.

I think they're predicting that the worst of it will be over by next week; but they reckon the South will still be having heavy snow through Sunday night. The North is looking to be free from fresh snowfall by Friday. How long it then takes to thaw, I don't know.

It's the same arctic wind that's causing problems across Northern Europe and America apparently.

In fairness of course, we've had fairly mild winters on the whole for the last 100 years, so having the worst doesn't take a great deal. Probably seems worse than it is because the country grinds to a halt as soon as there's snow on the ground. Some fearmongers are talking about short gas supplies at the moment (we store much less than in other countries in Europe) but I don't know how much credence to put to that given it's coming mainly from the opposition party (Tories) leader.

Snow, snow, snow-snowy-snow!
Lovely.

What we've got is our lot though :(
Big freeze starts tomorrow - can't say I fancy that much.
Had a good old trudge about in it. Went to the local shop with the 'rents to get a paper and a couple of things for Grandad's next door neighbour.

Mum & Dad went to visit Maureen, who'd taken one look at the weather and gones back to bed! She was pleased they'd come. (Widowed quite suddenly last year, suffers from depression, comes for Sunday lunch every oter Sunday). She says she might pop over this afternoon, which will be good for her.

We were sposed to have the kids today, as my sis and bro were working, but my sis got the day off in the end. She left home at 08.00 and at 08.15 was called to say her school would be closed. She was relieved of course, but frustrated that it was probably the last school in Bucks to declare its closure - she knew yesterday that that the kids' schools were closed.

I'm just enjoying it all while I can.
And hoping for more!
Regardless, I'll get a cold-weather bonus from the Benefits Office :)

Christ on a bike! It's cold out there!

Just got back from walking Pilau. Only went down to the playing fields (didn;t do the big country walk up the hills today). Was out less than 20 minutes, and my feet were like blocks of ice. Poor Pilau was up to his belly in it at some point of the walk. Got halfway back and he started limping, then stopped and lifted his front paw up, with it quivering. Kept moving it up and down . Felt inside his pads and there were tightly compacted hard balls of ice in there. managed to get him back home with some coaxing and melted them off in a bowl of tepid water.

Was going to go back out to the shop and buy more milk, but I think I'll just eke out what I've got. It's just too cold, even with hat and scarf.
Carruthers • Jan 6, 2010 4:38 pm
It isn't snowing at the moment but it is freezing.

Just been to look after the horses for the final time today. I was fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time as a 4WD vehicle needed to be returned to the farm. That made the outward journey reasonably straightforward, but on the way back I had to walk and my feet just went from under me. I hit the deck on my right side with one hell of a bang. Hip, wrist and shoulder took the brunt of it and I received an all round jarring. It took me a minute or two to pull myself together and stand once again. My first worry was that I'd hit my head. It sounds daft to say that, but I landed with a hell of a thump and didn't know for several seconds what part of me had made contact with the ground.

Anyway, this time last night we had a power cut so at least we've been spared that inconvenience. Nothing should get between a chap and his cup of tea.

Empires have fallen for less.:eyebrow:

They were predicting up to a foot of snow in some parts of wales, i heard.

Carruthers: that isn't fun. We had a small powercut the other night. I only know about it because my radio alarm reset itself. I have no idea how long the power was out for...hope the stuff in my freezer is safe to eat :P

As for tea: I ended up deciding to go back out after all, to get more milk. I don't like having to ration my cups of tea. Anything else, fine, but not tea.
xoxoxoBruce • Jan 6, 2010 7:45 pm
Dana, as long as the food in the freezer is cold to the touch, it's OK to eat or refreeze. It would take at least 24 hours without power to get warmer than that in most freezers, ever fridge freezers.

Oh, the Trafalgar Square Fountains froze. :D

One wily local councillor has been round to all the OAP bungalows (Grandad lives in one so we know) asking if tere was anything they needed and offering his card for the future. Raj Khan is our Lib Dem councillor and a well known face at this house.

Now Grandad has us, and we've also checked on his neighbours, but what a good piece of PR. Grandad was most impressed and went on about it to Mum. Which made her a bit grumpy - he's always more impressed by people who do things occasionally than by what she does every day. Also it's the party that she (we) deliver leaflets/ newsletters for, and Grandad has never shown any interest before, "Just stick it in the bin, gel."

Well done to them I say. They are certainly the most visible of all the parties in this town. Shame they can't win at anything other than local level.

Snowing again. Bleh. Train timetables are all to cock. My seat reservation no longer applies on the revised timetable. I hate travelling to London without a reservation. It's a stress-fest. You get there and battle your way on with all your luggage and hope to hell there's a seat. And if not, you end up standing (great) or sitting in the connecting passages with your luggage around you.

On the way back from London last time, I got lucky; on a revised train, I managed to grab a seat, but there were people standing almost all the way from London to Leeds.

Wish me luck!
Scriveyn • Jan 11, 2010 5:05 am
In December '08 it took me around 12 hours from London to Dartmoor because of flooding. Had to change trains four times. On the up side the station master called a taxi (paid for by something-or-other rail company) when they found that the last train wasn't running after all.

What kind of weather do Assorted Railways need to run on time?

Nevertheless, Good Luck Dana.

Good luck darlin'
I've always lucked out when weather has disrupted trains. I got a bump up to 1st class from Weymouth back to London once. I was leaving early because my travelling companion was doing my head in, but when I asked the guard if it was okay if I was travelling on the wrong day he thought I'd been delayed and stamped my ticket accordingly. Then again, he hung around for about 30 mins chatting to me...

NO SNOW HERE.

Well, I made it :P Am in my Travelodge room.

Took me two and a half hours to get to the train station. Hauled bag and case and laptop through the village to the top road (taxis weren't coming to our village. Can't say as I blame 'em). Ended up waiting at the bus stop for an hour and a half in a blizzard. Traffic was nose to tail. People were pulling their cars over, getting out and walking. One woman walked past and said 'you'll have a wait. I've been sat in my car for an hour and barely moved.'

A guy making deliveries for Walkers crisps got stuck on village main street (opposite where my stop is, the other side of the junction.) I saw people coming out of the post office and shops to help him get his van moved. Big van at that. All the side roads were dicey. He managed to get turned round and came back onto the main road. After about ten minutes of barely moving, he eventually ended up next to my bus stop. Offered me a lift ::P I figured what the hell? Loads of people around to see me get in. No chance of suddenly veering off down some lonely lane. One road was passable. The one that ended in town. And that barely, at a crawl. So, there I was after freezing my tiits off for 90 minutes in the snow, having a pleasant chat with the bloke (David) as we crawled our way down to town. That was another hour. But it was warm :P

Bless him, he totally changed tghe complexion of my day. Made it into town too late to get the 11.06 from Halifax (I'd set off to get the 10.06!) but in good time to grab some brreakfast and get the 12.06. Train station, and train staff were brilliantly helpful and friendly. The guard on the train to Wakefield made a note on my ticket and signed it, just in case I got a jobsworth (I didn't, everyone was great) on the train to london, having missed both my available trains for that ticket.

Very few people were stupid enough to travel today *grins* so the train to london was not too packed. I had two seats to myself. Got down to London and then over to Vauxhall on the underground, where a really helpful ticket guy told me I wouldn't need to do another change if I wanted to go to Kew Bridge instead of Kew Gardens, which put me even nearer the hotel. Walked out of station, into taxi firm: the guy said the taxi would be ten minutes, then 3 minutes later it turned up.

All plain sailing once I'd got out of the village.

I'd been slightly worried at what I'd find at Travelodge. Read some very mixed reviews online. And, actually, it is pretty nice. Smaller room than Premier Inn, but cosy. Actually, cosier than Prem's room, which was a bit big for one person. I wasn't quite able to relax into working in the prem room. Giant windows awith floor length curtains and so on. This room is brighter, more neutral colours, with a normal sized windw with curtains, and the desk is facing the window, rather than a blank wall. Here it just seems a better fit. Shower and stuff isn't all sparkly and new like Prem. They don't do as much upkeep and maintenance, and I suspect it's a bit of pot luck as to what you end up with...but seems fine to me. Staff have been helpful and friendly. Food was decent.

All in all a pleasant start :)
