I will continue to approach a newcomer with an assumption of innocent intent. If I am wrong then rarely are the consequences anything other than egg on my face. Which I am happy to live with. I could be right though. I could have been right last time. I might be right next time. This forum is not short of people sounding the alarms. There is no need to add my voice to that, the community is already warned.

It'd probably take too long to explain. But, simply put, not everyone is who they claim to be. If someone goes to extra special lengths to put across a very specific and challenging persona right from the outset, experience suggests that persona may be fake. For whatever purpose.

No, nobody gets drawn. The operative word in self-destruct, is self. Sometimes it's an accident like Toonces driving off a cliff, sometimes it's more like a suicide bomber, but it's always self. ;)

"Identity Politics" is only for the shitheaded. I for one avoid it.

Yale University has a population that can accurately be described as generally youthful. In that youthful population may be found a remarkable number of political clubs of about every color in the spectrum. See what you can find on "Yale POR" for "party of the right." These people tend to the Republican/Libertarian line of thinking, and from youth. There are also Yalie parties for Monarchism and probably Jacobitism among the English History majors...

There is an age-related tendency to go more conservative in one's later years -- from experience, which can be a real eye-opener to someone who's been living easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all he sees. One ends up trying to plan for the long term, rather than hewing to novelty simply for novelty's sake.

Show me a young Conservative and I'll show you someone with no heart. Show me an old Liberal and I'll show you someone with no brains.

I've long said that by that standard I've always been a bright boy. ;) Hearts and minds, I find, grow and develop with a bit of care.

The quote's a lot older than Churchill -- it goes back to England in the eighteenth century, crosses the Channel to France shortly thereafter, and has been volleying back and forth in variations all that time, recycled by famous men of letters repeatedly.

I think the reason there's so many young liberals is because young people don't understand that free hand outs are not free at all... that money has to come from somewhere! Many young people also don't understand that drugs, gay sex, going months with any hygiene
is bad, but as they get older they get smarter and many turn conservative. I was one of the lucky ones who got their smarts early.

Monster, did you know that there is a Wetherspoons in Oxford called The Four Candles? They try to name their pubs relevantly for the area (because of a backlash against silly made-up names by chains like Slug and Lettuce and Frog and Nightgown). It's named for the sketch in honour of Ronnie Barker who went to school nearby.

My Dad was made up when he found out. He thinks that sketch is one of the funniest in TV history. We made a special pilgrimage to see it when we went to Oxford (he wanted to go in, but Mum & I over-ruled him in favour of cocktails at Freuds).
