Nov 6, 2009: Diner in Arizona

Nirvana forwarded an email titled “Diner in Arizona”.

These pics were taken by one of the road crew at Cloudbreak, Arizona last week.
It took a total of 5 hours for the King Snake to finish off the Goanna. (Sand Monitor)
As you can see, they put some signage up so it couldn't be run over.

So what does one do besides forward it to “all” in the address book? :lol:

“Diner in Arizona email” – one hit, essentially a copy of the same email, posted online.
“Snake eats Goanna” – Bingo! 24,400 hits

Here's one.

Engineer Trevor McGowan, who took the shots, said he and his workmates watched on stunned as the snake consumed the goanna lizard over about five hours near Cloudbreak Mine in the Pilbara region last week.
The Irishman said he took the pictures early in the day and when he returned later he saw the goanna's 'bulge outline' inside the snake.

Now if I was smart, I’d have started with Goanna.

Goanna is the name used to refer to any number of Australian monitor lizards of the genus Varanus, as well as to certain species from Southeast Asia.
There are around 30 species of goanna, 25 of which are found in Australia. They are a varied group of carnivorous reptiles that range greatly in size and fill several ecological niches.

But then I wouldn’t have known it was a black-headed python.

Aspidites melanocephalus, the black-headed python, is a species of snake in the Pythonidae (python family) found in Australia. No subspecies are currently recognized.

And this last picture just proves the old adage… Paybacks, are a bitch.

I was a little surprised to read about goannas in Arizona. Maybe you have Ogoannas, like with Opossums.

That snake has a serious blackhead.

As for non-indigenous animals in the wild, I think the swamps of Florida is having a pretty big problem with people letting their pet snakes go in the wild. An environment perfect for their livelihood and for breeding, only, the ecosystem there isn't used to another predator...

Thanks for finding that Bruce! I thought these were cool pictures but I did not think lizards like that existed outside zoos here in the USA. The dirt looks all wrong too. It looks like red clay. I think when people pass around emails its kind of like playing that game called telephone and the real story is interesting.

If the goanna is a monitor, is the snake a merrimack?

Yes. Like many emails that circulate, the pictures remain the same, but the story changes.

This one said AZ, but the lizard is only found in AU/S.E.Asia, and the snake only in AU. So it turns out to be a true story from Australia, not Arizona.

There was/is another email(s) going around about a moose being born on someone's lawn. The pictures are real, but the story places it in every northern U.S. state, or Canada, depending on which email you get. :rolleyes:

Probably, but the email said Diner. I suppose the snake is the diner, in this case. :)

Once more truth, justice and the American way wins out. After reading all of the posts, I, uh . . . went back to the original quote, then googled Pilbara.
It's in Australia.

Yeah, hipshot, I thought about that, but the pictures aren't that gross. And since Nirvana piqued my interest and I'd spent all that time tracking it down, I didn't have time to look for another.

Besides, I'd hate to see you all get complacent on Fridays. :haha:

Arizona, Australia, just different spellings for the same place, just like Australia and Austria. Same difference.

Make no mistake; when that snake fully digests that lizard, there will be one hell of a stool. And he will probably be shaking when he drops it.

I found the Black Headed Python, but for some reason when I try to find out what kind of snake this is, I get distracted. :confused:
