If you were buying a new central air conditioning system right now (before 2010) which type (R-22 or R-410A) would you go with? And why?
I don't know which one is cheaper, one is going to be unavialable after 2010, I think. We went with the cheaper one.
Okay. Comments withheld because I don't want to influence the course of the discussion.
Oh, hell.
My understanding is that new R-22 equipment will not be manufactured after 2010. The R-22 refrigerant will continue to be produced until 2020.
Well the cheaper stuff is good if you install it now. But it will not be available for sale on new units after 2010. It was like $1500 to $2000 cheaper to go with the older stuff. And hopefully I will not be in the same house in 10 years so who cares.
Yes. That's exactly what I said initially, and I still feel that may be the case. I need a working unit right now, i.e. the kind that everybody else in America currently has will do just fine. In 10 years, I will in no way be living in this house. To the buyers, I can say "brand new AC" in either case.
