Would it be helpful to be able to share audio

Undertoad • Oct 19, 2009 3:59 am
Like right now, we have the youtube BB code that allows us to embed youtube videos directly into the posts...

Would it be helpful if you could, say, upload your own mp3 and then embed that into a post?
smoothmoniker • Oct 19, 2009 4:20 am
I'd use it.
xoxoxoBruce • Oct 19, 2009 4:25 am
RIAA Alert... Attention lawyers... File sharing detected... Danger, Danger.
limey • Oct 19, 2009 8:06 am
I'd like a simple way to hear other dwellar's sound files ... it might even encourage me to make a recording of myself!
glatt • Oct 19, 2009 8:26 am
I remember there have been a couple of times that I wished such a thing existed, but can't remember now exactly why. It was neat when Clodfobble posted a sound file of her voice work a couple years ago, and it would have been cool if she had been able to do it directly in a Cellar post instead of in a convoluted secret way.

Amazon gives you like 20 seconds of a song in a preview. Is that what you were thinking of? Limiting the file size or length in some way? Otherwise, the RIAA is a real concern. The new business model of the recording industry is to take your house from you, not to sell you music.
lumberjim • Oct 19, 2009 1:18 pm
yeah, what the hell are you talking about?!
Cloud • Oct 19, 2009 1:25 pm
not for me
Flint • Oct 19, 2009 1:36 pm
Yes. This is something I have wanted The Cellar to do.
Undertoad • Oct 19, 2009 1:54 pm
[audio]2009/a.mp3[/audio]

Is there anyone who can't see a player above? Does it play properly?
Undertoad • Oct 19, 2009 2:08 pm
And fuck the RIAA, but if somebody would send me a cease and desist I would certainly cease and I might even be moved to desist.
Flint • Oct 19, 2009 2:28 pm
Had to allow Active X through Information Bar (obvioulsy). Cool, it looks like the mini-player (as if minimized to the taskbar). Yes, it plays!
limey • Oct 19, 2009 2:43 pm
What Flint said. And is that you and your band, UT?
Undertoad • Oct 19, 2009 2:50 pm
No, that's a Saint Etienne sketch that never turned into a song, I think. It's called "Hill Street Connection". I just thought it would be a pleasant demo for people.
lumberjim • Oct 19, 2009 3:04 pm
firefox says i need quicktime.
Undertoad • Oct 19, 2009 3:10 pm
Yeahr, it is Quicktime but I think some browsers will register with WMP to handle it? Well this is the sort of thing we need to figure out.
Undertoad • Oct 19, 2009 3:10 pm
And when I say we I mean I
jinx • Oct 19, 2009 3:33 pm
Works for me except I can't hear it because I have no sound on this pc... but the player is there and the bar moves.
glatt • Oct 19, 2009 3:38 pm

For me too. I just installed Quicktime, and restarted, and now I see and hear the embedded player. Cool!

It's fine on my home computer. It didn't show at work because I don't have Quicktime installed there and didn't feel like bothering.
jinx • Oct 19, 2009 9:14 pm
Huh. Doesn't work on my laptop - just a black bar where the player is.
classicman • Oct 19, 2009 9:16 pm
It worked for me, and I'm the idiot that usually has trouble with even the simplest computer task.
jinx • Oct 19, 2009 9:20 pm
What exactly are you implying classic?

Doesn't work on jim's laptop either, nothing there, not even the black bar.
zippyt • Oct 19, 2009 10:24 pm
I see Nothing !!
xoxoxoBruce • Oct 20, 2009 12:58 am
Works for me.
lumberjim • Oct 20, 2009 1:05 am
what the crap?

and I have quick time on this thing....
TheMercenary • Oct 20, 2009 5:05 am
first I saw the bar and heard no sound. then I restarted the player by moving the button back to the beginning and it worked. Cool. Now we can actually curse at each other and hear it.
glatt • Oct 20, 2009 8:30 am
I notice it automatically loads the audio file so it's all queued up and ready to play when you click on it. That's great when you have a thread with just one audio track in it. I like to show 60 posts per page when I view the Cellar, and I wonder if we get a thread going with an audio clip in every other post, is that thread going to take forever to load when you have 30 audio files being simultaneously automatically loaded every time you open the thread? Or would they remain in my cache and not be reloaded every time?

I don't know if Quicktime or whatever has the option of loading it when you actually click on it, but that would be my preference.

[flashaudio=b.mp3]Air - Mer Du Japon[/flashaudio]

How about this. This uses Flash instead of Quicktime, so if you can play YouTubers, you can probably play this.

Also it supports a title.
smoothmoniker • Oct 20, 2009 11:10 am
Like that much better.
glatt • Oct 20, 2009 11:14 am
Yes. Very nice.
xoxoxoBruce • Oct 20, 2009 11:14 am
I see the bar, with the title. When I hit the play button it says, "loading playlist", but nothing happens... for a couple minutes anyway.
Undertoad • Oct 20, 2009 11:16 am
B I think you hit it when I was working on it... reload and try again

same here
xoxoxoBruce • Oct 20, 2009 11:20 am
Nope. closed browser, cleared everything with CCleaner, came back, same same?
Must know I'm deaf.
dar512 • Oct 20, 2009 11:21 am
Worked for me.
Undertoad • Oct 20, 2009 11:22 am
OK. It's an IE thing. FFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUU
dar512 • Oct 20, 2009 11:29 am
Undertoad;602226 wrote:

Because IE is da debbil.
Undertoad • Oct 20, 2009 11:32 am
OK try it now

[flashaudio=b.mp3]Air - Mer Du Japon[/flashaudio]
xoxoxoBruce • Oct 20, 2009 11:44 am
That works.
dar512 • Oct 20, 2009 11:47 am
Any way to get it to show progress?
Undertoad • Oct 20, 2009 11:53 am
No this one doesn't include that.

I gotta write my own audio player someday... I threatened to do that 5 years ago... but it means I have to buy Flash for $699 [COLOR=Lime]or pirate it along with the entire Adobe Professional Suite. They don't really expect me to pay full price do they? Fuckers
[/COLOR]
xoxoxoBruce • Oct 20, 2009 12:10 pm
Is it worth the time-trouble-money just to have a progress bar?
Hitting play is like taking wedding vows.
What happened to commitment, stick-to-it-ness, in to the end?
:haha:
Pie • Oct 20, 2009 12:19 pm
So, can I get something to auto-play? And get some folks fired??

[COLOR=LemonChiffon]Heh.[/COLOR]
Undertoad • Oct 20, 2009 12:21 pm
Hah! Auto-play would be turned off, in the same way that avatars are turned off on the Cellar.
gvidas • Oct 20, 2009 12:55 pm
+1 for no autoplay
+1 for title.

It's interesting how deeply rooted this place is in music, musicianship, etc without this having happened yet.

Plays great in Safari.
limey • Oct 20, 2009 1:28 pm
Seems OK to me.
smoothmoniker • Oct 20, 2009 1:48 pm
Dunno if there's a way to integrate, but this player is one of the most elegant and simple I've seen, and it works very well:

http://wpaudioplayer.com/

And example here:

http://addisonrd.com/WordPress/2006/12/15-hymns-do-you-hear-what-i-hear/
Tulip • Oct 20, 2009 10:15 pm
Both players worked for me. Hmm...I think I have almost everything installed on my computer. No wonder it's starting to slow down.:p
Undertoad • Oct 20, 2009 10:25 pm
Now the harder part: I need to work out a way for folks to upload and host content here.
xoxoxoBruce • Oct 21, 2009 2:26 am
Or wait until the tip jar fills up.
capnhowdy • Oct 23, 2009 8:02 am
All of them work for me, but for some reasom the first player loaded a lot quicker.
