....a cake that screams 1970s? If not, what is? My friend who has decided to make her entire house/life 1970s is coming for lunch on Weds and it's her birthday.....
Red Velvet? Seems like rainbow cake was popular then, too.
I don't think red velvet cake made it to the UK. it seems popular here right now. What is rainbow cake?

I've posted before about a restaurant called The Dolphin in Leyton, which was like a perfectly preserved 70's restaurant. I went there with a South African friend, so he didn't get my sheer joy (prawn cocktail! Mattheus Rose! sweet trolley!) but he certainly enjoyed the food.
If you can get patterned carpet, you're well in.
If not, make creamed mushrooms with special mushrooms. You'll see patterns everywhere.

Prawn cocktail
no need to use English prawns (ie shrimps) but use shredded lettuce and Marie Rose Sauce made from salad cream & ketchup decorated with cayenne pepper
OR
sliced melon decorated with cayenne pepper
Ideally roast
Ideally pork or beef. Yorkshires must always be served.
Also acceptable - chicken kiev, steak & kidney pie, chops
Please note the above are only acceptable if guests turn up unexpectedly. Roasts should always be available.
Sweets
As mentioned above.
Black Forest Gateau. Offer with cream. Because it's not sweet enough.
Sherry Trifle. Should have enough alcohol content to render the guest unfit to drive without recourse to any liquers.
Fruit Trifle - tinned fruit where the only identifiable items are grapes and cherries, and neither taste as such.
Served with - Matteus Rose, Hock or Blue Nun.
My memory of the food of the 1970s mostly consists of mixed frozen vegetables. :shudder:

sg, that's great but I'm only doing cake 70s style. the rest will be whatever i can throw together from the fridge/freezer in the hour I have after skating class :lol: (Likely to be extrememly loaded baked potatos Brit-style). There are four of us usually. This week it was lentil and barley soup followed by apple crisp. Week before was chicken pizza made on the grill outside followed by Brownies, before that chicken salad (Brit translation: chicken mayo and grapes and some other stuff) and accompaniments followed by cupcakes.

The German chocolate,Pineapple upside down and bundt cakes were popular in the 70.s Red food die was banned at that time so we didn't see red velvet cake for awhile.
Black Forest Torte. :drool: I think here in the US the black forest didn't really get popular until the 80s? I live so far out west I had not heard of one until then anyway.

Looking back, it's hard to remember if the stuff I remember from the 70s was 70s stuff or was just kids' stuff. I was a kid back then, and surrounded by kids' stuff. I remember a funfetti cake which had like little gumballs or something mixed in it.

I made the funfetti cake for my kid in the 80s. Did anyone else think it was the most tasteless cake ever created? It looks pretty but it is so bland. The one made with jello is good though.

I remember it more from the 60s. But I think it went well into the 70s.

With three children learning at two different schools, Mum was heartily sick of it by the time my bro brought home the last one.

I hope I am not too late. I want to mention to make the cake the same day you serve it. The cake gets mushy around the pineapple the next day. Pecans won't.
I'm hearing that Merkin and Brit pineapple upside down cake are different. Well tough, she's getting the Brit version :lol: and it's possibly getting made tonight, but the brit version has a syrupy bit round the pineapples, so soggy is not so much of an issue, but thanks, I will keep it in mind.

When I make pineapple upside down cake, it's basically just a teacake with pineapple rings on the bottom of the cake pan and then brown sugar sprinkled over before the cake batter is poured in.
I've never used cherries before, but now that it's come up, I think i'll do that next time.

yeah, well, the syrupy thing (brown sugar/butter) wasn't working so by mutual consent with my friend who arrived early, I gave up on that. which resulted in it sticking to the pan a little and not so brown on top.... but it was yummy. And is now all gone. :) ...I lied, there was a crumb. NOW it's all gone :yum:
I must show you mt "serving set" -it's actually my roast dish and gravy boat I made.... the base of the roast dish is interesting and I don't think I put it in the ceramics thread... or maybe I did?
Pineapple Upside Down cake is my favoritest cake ever.
The best part is the brown sugary pineapply goodness that sticks to the pan!
I can do without cherries (my brother says I'm Unamerican if I don't like cherries) or pecans...but the cherries make it prettier.
