Baby names

Cloud • Aug 27, 2009 9:51 am
Since both my daughters are expecting (grandbaby clouds 7 and 8), I have been collecting and considering names. Not my choice to make in the end, but I am graciously granted some input rights.

Did I tell you? (can't remember). Beautiful Daughter No. 1, who already has four girls, is now expecting a boy! Yay! But boys names are hard. We don't like common names like Daniel or Matthew, but don't want something too weird or too hard to spell.

In the lead for BD#1 are: Ander, Kai and Jace. Middle name will most likely be Javier. In the lead for BD#2 (who will not know beforehand what she's having) is, apparently, Lazarus.
u:(
Don't like that one. Kinda long (no pun intended!) (anybody else get that?) and the only nickname I can parse from it is Lazy. Anyway, for your amusement, here are some names we have collected. Not all of these are getting serious consideration.

Quetzl the Pretzel....

There are a lot of names on that list that will ensure he gets his ass kicked on a weekly basis!

I like Rhys!

Astrid always makes me thing of Pippi Longstocking -I think maybe it was the author's name? Astring Linsomethingorother
Cloud • Aug 27, 2009 10:04 am
As I said, many not seriously being considered.

We already have: Azalea, Cyan, Rahvin, Meilyn, Marlee, Jayden

So you can see the kinds of names which would match.

And besides, if he gets his ass kicked, he'll just grow up to be a football player; make lots of money, and keep his grammy in style in her old age.
monster • Aug 27, 2009 10:13 am
We're just helping with the elimination here

Cloud • Aug 27, 2009 10:16 am
kind of a mashup of lists from different sources. And I do have two babies named after me: Marlee (which includes my name); and Jayden Cloud. that's enough.

Lots of color names since those run in the family. Revel is kinda cool. I like Teru, too but no one else does. One set of parents does not want anything too "white" or "preppy" in order to go with a spanish last name.

So many considerations!

Lots of name information at this site. But I like the interactive chart that shows the popularity of a name you type in.

Undertoad • Aug 27, 2009 10:19 am
In my day the kid would stand no chance. First one to get his ass kicked in middle school. And, the mere fact that Gaia/Gaius made the list means that whomever added it should have zero role in name choice. ZERO ROLE. I don't care about "seriously considered", if you added it to the list you must depart.

In fact a good third of the names there are practically girl's names. Astrud Gilberto, great French chick singer. Ione Skye, chick actress. Remy, I believe is a Cognac.

I hope things have changed since then, but I doubt it. I suggest finding a man to name this child. The women are doing him a major disservice. You chicks want to be cute about it, but you have no idea. You think, oh great, let's make him unique. It's really, oh great let's give him an anchor to drag around.

Luka is acceptable, but everyone knows he lives on the second floor and quietly gets physically abused by his parents.

Give the kid half a chance, use Dar's wizard and pick something in the top 500 for the last 10 years. And it has to be blue. If the name's blue, it's coo'. If the name's pink, it stinks.
Shawnee123 • Aug 27, 2009 10:24 am
Luka also sells pizza.

I think undertoad would be a great name for a child. Especially a girl.

The kids with the boring names would get picked on at my kids' school, if they weren't all so busy spreading love and peace.

Ugh. No top names! Boys names are all the same.

Yeah, I get the point, really. And these kids have fathers who must choose and agree to the name, (and I don't even get veto power) so we'll see.

I like Jasper for a boy. A little old-fashioned, but not terribly common.

Oh man, Pagan is a really bad idea. I promise. I mean, besides the fact that you've just guaranteed he'll rebel by becoming a rigid fundamentalist, all through his youth he is going to be quietly discriminated against by those same fundamentalists. Can you just imagine, say, his third grade teacher muttering to herself in disgust, "Well I never..." and suddenly his papers just aren't getting the same grades they were the year before? Your child's name is no place for a political statement.

Out of the "lead" names I like Ander only. I dislike names with only one syllable. If you want to shorted in to one, fine, but it should have atleast two for formal reasons.

Your list:
Aislinn - how is the pronounced? ahs-linn or ase-linn? doesn't matter, too girly.
Astrid - no, ugly. again is it ah-strid or ae-strid?
Canyon - I like
Cloud - you already have a g-kid with that in their name
Crimson - I like
Darby - no
Delyth - too girly
Echo - girl name
Gaia/Gaius -no
Guthrie -fuck no
Halcyon -what? i thought y'all wanted easy spellings. maybe i'm just a poor reader, but that is another iffy pronunciation.
Iona - girly
Mab/Maeve - only 1 syllable, no
Meru - its ok
Rhythm - no
Auryn - what?
Xanthe - i like, but its only 1 syllable, so not for a first name
Thea - 1 syllable, no
Revel - its ok
Celedon - really? you serious? no
Cerulean - i like, but might be too girly
Dresdan - sounds like an alien sci-fi book or something. Its OK
Rhys - you know why not
Eris - girly
Silvio - its ok
Declan - its ok
Luka - no, i see a starving eastern european kid with that name
Quetzl - i like it, but it would be hard to spell for some (mainly idiots).
Pagan - no, reasons clod stated
Rune - no, too paganish, and 1 syllable
Beran/Beren - too close to barren (as in unable to produce)
Blaise/Blaze - 1 syllable
Dario (Darius) - i like Darius, and Dario is an acceptable nick-name
Danilo - i like it
Dermell - no
Harper - its ok
Sterling - just don't like it for a name
Silver - same as Sterling
Teru - no
Rio - no, think about it, do you really want to name a boy "river." there will be enuf pee related incidents. you don't need a self-fulling prophecy like this.
Indigo/Inigo/Vigo - Indigo is ok
Ander - i like
Beckett - too much like a last name
Blake - no
Dashiel - i like it
Dayo - i like it
Dax - no
Drake - no
Gian - how do you pronounce?
Flynn - no, its a last name
Jace - no
Jett - no
Kal - no
Lucian - I kinda like it but it sounds like an evil character.
Mac - no
Malachai/Chai/Kai - I like Malachai, but still sounds like an evil character.
Remy - no
Tirso (family name) - that one is interesting
Tru - no
Ty - no
Val - no
Zeke - Only if you go with Ezekiel as the real name
Zuma - kinda girly

Well, thats my opinion for ya. I also like the boy name Elijah, but it didn't make your list. :(
monster • Aug 27, 2009 11:58 pm
Zen, do you have a "regular" or an "alternative" name?
ZenGum • Aug 28, 2009 12:11 am
Alternative when I was young, but getting a little commonplace now.

Hearing it mangled by teachers was bad enough, but it also made an easy target for teasing.
morethanpretty • Aug 28, 2009 12:24 am
I hate my plain name. Wish I had an "alternative" one. I was teased for plenty of other things, even if I were teased for my name it would be worth it because it would be unique.

Cloud • Aug 28, 2009 3:27 pm
Thanks MTP--I tend to agree with most of them. That list is more of a brainstorming list, not all of them are under serious consideration. And yeah, one of the kids doesn't know the sex yet, so we are listing both boys and girls names.

Now the front runner seems to be "Orion" for the boy.

Who the hell knows.

Oh, and my name only has one syllable. In fact, my first and last name each have only one syllable--lots of people remember it easily.
monster • Aug 28, 2009 3:57 pm
I misread that as Onion. Next!
monster • Aug 28, 2009 3:58 pm
Thor only has one syllable -believe me he doesn't need two!

Thea and Xanthe I would pronounce both with two syllables.

Well seein as how I forgot about the 2nd child havin' not yet been determined, I will revise for them.
Names for the possible girl from the list I liked:

Aislinn - how is the pronounced? ahs-linn or ase-linn? I like the "ahs-linn" pronunciation. Suggest alt-spelling: Aislynn
Canyon - I like for a girl also
Crimson - Although I'm tempted to say this might be good for a girl, then I thought about when they get their cycles and what a bad name that would be...so no.
Delyth - def like for a girl
Echo - girl name - only echo i ever new was a scrawny slut
Iona - maybe, but sounds kinda old-lady to me
Mab/Maeve - Its old-lady
Cerulean - i like it
Eris - i like this one
Rio would be Ria for a girl, unless your usin' a different language than I am. It might be good for a girl, not as much of a chance of...troubles.
Tirso (family name) - that one is interesting, would it work for a girl?
Zuma - I love this name for a girl, and all the more so since i looked it up and it means "peace"

I would also like to submit Autumn for consideration. I don't know about "popular," "alternative" or all that. I simply think its a great name and season, and if the girl happens to be born at the right time...well its there.
Old-lady names I do like: Theola, Esther, Beulah. All grandma's of mine :).

I want to make these changes to my opinion of the boy names:

Auryn - no really, i want to know how to say this is. The spelling is interestin. The meaning is apparently "golden one" but i didn't find a pronounce. My guess would be like "Aaron" but more "Aar-en" or "Aar-in" perhaps "Air-yen". I don't know.
Xanthe - since i've been correct on how this is said, I now like it
Thea - although i've been corrected on how this is said, I still don't like it.
Dresdan - I've decided this name is more awesome, than just OK.
monster • Aug 28, 2009 11:08 pm
Xanthe and Thea are girls' names ;)
Cloud • Aug 29, 2009 12:54 am

A couple of years ago, I had a friend at work. One of those sweet swayable teenage girl-types who was expecting, but the father of said sprog didn't want to know.

I almost succeeded in convincing her to call her child 'Asbo' (if a boy) or 'Asbette' if a girl.In the end she ran with something else, but I felt mine were both valid choices.

I have noticed that two things tend to screw people up in subtle ways ... dumb names and birthdays too close to holidays. Friend of mine's kind is named Krysta, born on Christmas Eve. She's doomed.

he ended up a Martin :)

[eta] I hated my name as a kid. 'Danielle' just sounded too round and clumsy to me. The fact that I also have two middle names didn;t help matters. Also, it was a rare name when i was growing up; hadn't become as common as it now is. Any unusual name is the kiss of death if you're being bullied. Now I rather like it ... the name, not the being bullied:P

I have always disliked my name. Not feminine enough to make it obvious I am a girl...not masculine enough to win me job interviews. My husband's name is also androgynous. I wish people wouldn't name girls with "boy" names, though. It really messed with my concept of femininity.
Cloud • Sep 2, 2009 10:06 pm
I also have an ambiguous first name. I get a lot of mail addressed to "Mr. Lee . . . "

Fail! But I'm pretty girly nevertheless.

Mine's obviously girly

So it's clear we need to name our children with something fitting the total opposite or what we hope they will become. i.e. what we dread.... White Republicans in Texas should consider the names "Barack", "Jervais" and "Indira"........

Mine's seriously poshly girly ....two big dooh doooohs there.

Mum decided it was her turn to name the baby come hell or high water with me, but Dad refused to call me by my official name. Hence why I am known by my first name and my second.

It makes things very confusing at times.

My cousin just named their newborn son DeeJay Bryne...not Brian, or Bryan....Bryne. I tried to explain to them that it sounds like Brine but they are 20 years old and they know everything.

I told them, "Hey, he's your kid. Name him what you want, but he may hate you for it later. And if he comes home with bloody nose or a busted lip because he got into a fight over his name, remember....it's YOUR fault. You did this to him."

The kid may go by DB like DB Cooper.
Cloud • Nov 23, 2009 11:37 pm
I hate DeeJay more; everyone has weird middle names. DeeJay isn't a name; it's an occupation.

Still waiting to hear on the two new ones. I think BD#1 is holding out for Orion. BD#2 has no clue and doesn't know if she's having a B or G. They like "Revel" or maybe something with "Lux" in the middle name. Oy.
monster • Nov 24, 2009 12:17 am
My kids love their unusual names. Maybe Radar's cousin won't be stupid enough to send DeeJay to a school where the kids are stupid enough to beat up kids with unusual names.

A kid just got kicked at my kids' school. It is a big deal and resulted on suspensions, first time ever. Kid's name was Cody. Maybe it was too normal? When kids are bullied "because of their names", it's just an excuse for people who don't want to admit other prejudices or other character problems that upset them.

Let's see:

Star Quarterback named Shirley
Math Club President and Valedictorian called Brad.

you choose....

Radar, you're shallow.

Clodfobble is wise as ever. She is also unlucky that she was born in th US -her name was more unusual in the UK.

There was one memorable visit to the obstetrician (where the effect is exacerbated since all the patients are female and within a reasonable age bracket) where of the eight people in the waiting room, five of us had the same name. It's just stupid.
monster • Nov 24, 2009 12:45 am

Clodfobble • Nov 24, 2009 6:21 pm
That's an interesting question... I can't think of any instances for sure--in the times when I was faced with someone who was assuming I was stupid, I always figured it was because I was young and/or a girl. There's a reason I chose an androgynous handle when I joined here, and didn't put my birth year in my profile for a long time. :)

I remember a very short-lived sitcom some years back. There was a stereotypical barbie doll blonde woman with a baby girl (as Caucasian as the mom) she named Oprah.

That's all I remember about it. It didn't last long.

Winfrey was named "Orpah" after the biblical character in the Book of Ruth on her birth certificate, but people mispronounced it regularly and Oprah stuck.

My son went to school with a girl named Formica. We are big on family names and tradition. Since before the Napoleonic Wars, the oldest male of each generation is named Louis.

I have to admit I have always wanted to name a daughter Anastasia. I have loved that name since I studied Russian.

I kinda liked Lysander after a Jilly Cooper character, but it seemed mean...

Ripley is an awesome name btw. Jim, did you see that article about terrible names of 2013 and kids name Cheese? Two of the allegedly worst names were Rocket and Ripley -both for boys. I know a girl called Rocket irl and she is also awesome. And feisty ;)

(still can't get with calling your kid Cheese, though. Bacon, I could understand ;) )
Clodfobble • Aug 19, 2014 10:05 pm
I knew a guy with a dog named Cheese. It's an awesome dog name, but for a kid not so much. I don't know why they'd say Ripley is a bad name for a boy, though. Nouns-as-names are always going to be worse than last-names-as-names.

I do question the judgement, though, and am not holding up as something I agree with, I just noticed Ripley and rocket on there. probably because they are next to each other, are names of kids I "know", and are the other gender from the kids I know. I think they're great names :D
lumberjim • Aug 19, 2014 11:30 pm
Ripley is definitely feminine. She's proud of her name. Her friends are all jealous. Her 5 friends named Hannah. Small exaggeration.

Just in case she hated it, though, we gave her Jane in the middle.

She's always gonna be Ippy to me though.
monster • Aug 20, 2014 8:02 am
I meant the judgment of the people deciding which were "odd" names, sorry if that wasn't clear!
glatt • Aug 20, 2014 9:16 am
Names are funny. You try to go for what you think is an uncommon but still traditional name, like Isabel, and it later turns out there are two of them in the same class with your kid. And then you figure what the hell, and name you son Adam, figuring it's still a good name, even if it's popular, and he winds up being the only kid in the county school system with that name. [/only a slight exaggeration]

You can't worry too much about what other people are doing when you are coming up with names. ymmv
lumberjim • Aug 20, 2014 12:00 pm
Yah. We were not going for unique ness... Just a strong name that also sounds pretty. As though naming her after a survivor of a nightmarish sci-fi catastrophy had any bearing on who she will become in life...

But, I really think that if you name your daughter Raven or Cinnamon.... She's going to be a stripper.
