Dweller NOT RFN Pictures

morethanpretty • Aug 21, 2009 9:58 pm
Found some old pics of me today so I thought I would share. If any of y'all have any, you can share here as well.
I couldn't find a matching thread for this so I hope no one minds that I just started a new one.

Just a lil' un.

DucksNuts • Aug 22, 2009 8:04 pm
Whoa, this thread was freaking me out, first Clod asking if morethanpretty was morethanpretty and then jinx talking about the poster being familiar...I read poster as *the person who posted in this thread* = poster....and I was like, flipping out that jinx didnt know who UT was and Clod didnt know that mtp was mtp.

Im going back to crack smoking now
xoxoxoBruce • Aug 22, 2009 8:06 pm
Yeah, it's been a little hard to follow. :haha:
Undertoad • Aug 22, 2009 8:09 pm
I believe I rejected the entire notion of Halloween as a "reverse conformity" holiday, where people could feel safe rejecting conformity as a group. I explained to mystified people that my costume was "a rock".

So, in 2005, MTP looked like MTP and in 1980 Undertoad did Halloween dressed as Shawnee. That it?

I'm the one reading the paper. My grandfather is next to me asleep. This would have been around 1980 or so.

It was our 2nd VW Bus. The middle seat was easy to remove for camping trips. My dad had built a platform and also mounted a couple of supports so a sheet of plywood could rest on the front seat backs and a removable rope that stretched across the inside of the bus to those supports. Each night, we would install the rope and pull the sheet of plywood down off the roof rack. We had home made foam mattresses. We could easily sleep 6 in that bus, assuming 2 were kids and would sleep down in the "sweatbox."

Those were good days. We crossed the country 3 times in a VW bus and saw a lot. At night, if there was no campground around, we'd pull off into some deserted dirt side road. We were very self contained.

Sometimes I feel like I'm depriving my own kids because we don't do stuff like this with them. But I don't have summers off like my dad did, and I think people today would shoot you if they saw you parked by the side of the road overnight. Or at least call the cops.
morethanpretty • Aug 25, 2009 1:06 pm
Thats really cool glatt! You're not deprivin' your kids, everyone grows up with different experiences and memories. You do your best and that is what counts.

Actually, thinking back, there is no way it would be a newspaper. Those were rare when camping. It was probably a MAD magazine.

BTW, I like the "triple stack" sleeping arrangements. It's like Jenga!
spudcon • Aug 25, 2009 4:46 pm
Studying the photo closely, it looks like the Sunday Comics from the newspaper, disguising the smut magazine behind it.
Elspode • Aug 25, 2009 7:49 pm
What secured the upper bed platform to the roof? Duct tape?
glatt • Aug 25, 2009 8:00 pm
It was pretty clever. A hinge was screwed up into the roof truss on each side of the bus. The other side of each hinge was tied to a rope, and the rope stretched loosely across the bus like a hammock. The plywood was supported on one end by the rope sling and by the front seat backs on the other end. During travel, you would just pull each hinge pin, and the rope could be removed with the attached hinges on each side.
dar512 • Aug 25, 2009 8:31 pm
From your posts, we can deduce that your family was clever, fun, and close. You're a lucky guy to have those memories.

And, yes, you should be doing the same with your kids and relatives. (Yeah, I know. Easy for me to say. But I bet you'd have a ball.)

We have all learned that lesson at least once, trust me

Mine was with my Dad grinning from ear to ear after I shot his 300 Winchester Magnum with it just slightly off my shoulder. I thought I had broken something!

Or like the time I first shot a 44 magnum handgun ... was about 10 and even holding it with both hands it still jumped back in and the hammer drew blood on my forehead. Ahhh ... good memories ...
glatt • Dec 2, 2009 8:44 am
No pictures of me shooting, but here's a rugged outdoorsman one from a while ago.;)
Sundae • Dec 2, 2009 9:19 am
Well of course I have some for you too :)
No access to a scanner anymore though - so it's photos of photos.
Most have turned out quite well.

Pic 1: I'm on the right at my sister's communion, aged 5 (although I'll be 6 in 3 months)
Pic 2: Our little gang - at the front our next door neighbour, then my sis, then me. Any idea how I grew up with ugly duckling syndrome? Summer 1983. Note the field to our left and the view of farmland at the bottom of the path. Compare and contrast with recent pic. Not quite the same angle, but I hope you get the idea.

Wow. Quite a difference. If the house on the left with the brown siding wasn't still there, I would say they are two entirely different places.
Sundae • Dec 2, 2009 9:23 am
Laura and I at the start of the 1986 school term.
We're at different schools, hence the difference in dress, as she does not have to wear a uniform.
I'm proud in my black jumper, which you can only wear in the 4th and 5th year.

It was a poor photo to start with, hence the poor quality reproduction.
Sundae • Dec 2, 2009 9:25 am
And finally. Found the album my parents put together after my wedding.
A bit of crying, a lot of soul searching, but that was weeks ago.
