Fantasy Football 2009

lumberjim • Jul 23, 2009 12:05 am
It's time to create the league, and start researching for the draft.

who's in this year?!

last year's champion was Pete....she beat sycamore. I think it was all because of how cool her helmet was.

The bullies WILL make the playoffs this year, dammit.

can we move this over to yahoo so we can actually pick the players we get, otherwise, its kind of meaningless.
i mean if you're leaving the players you'll get, to chance....its not really your team.
half the fun of fantasy is the draft.
glatt • Jul 23, 2009 8:24 am
I'm in again. It was fun last year and actually caused me to watch a game on tv.
Shawnee123 • Jul 23, 2009 8:51 am
Can you explain it a little? I might like to play, but I don't want to commit if it takes a lot of time, being a slacker in my off-hours and all. Since I no longer really have a football team, I can see how it would make the season more exciting, and I love football just never really have anything to get into it about these days.
glatt • Jul 23, 2009 9:06 am
Takes about twenty minutes a week for basic participation, which is what I did.

If you want to get more into it than that, you can watch all the games and read all the news and make elaborate plans. You have your team, and the website tells you if any of your players are injured or are sitting out because they have no game scheduled that week. If that's the case for any player, you need to put a substitute in their place. As you follow the players' performances during the season, you may be unhappy with someone and want to trade him, so you look at the list of available players and make the trade. You should do that earlier in the week, because it takes a day or so to process it. You always want to have your full team ready to play once each weekend arrives.

It's hard to explain without the website to look at, but it's really pretty well organized and easy. All the information you need is right there.
Shawnee123 • Jul 23, 2009 9:31 am
OK, I'm in. Sounds like fun.

NFL dot com has a live draft option, whip.....but ...again.... theres no way we're all going to get logged in at a predetermined time and spend 4 hours doing a live draft. do that with your sports betting buddies. the automated draft works ok if you spend some time devising your strategy, and ranking the players you want.
glatt • Jul 23, 2009 9:44 am
I'm a fan of letting the computer pick them for you. You can get a decent team that way.
Griff • Jul 23, 2009 2:12 pm
Pete and Griff are in.

I agree with Jim on draft style. You can strategize with NFLcom it is just a different kind of strategy and as glatt says you can let things slide and still get a decent squad.
W.HI.P • Jul 23, 2009 2:27 pm
ok, lets keep it at nfl.com, but at least make it a live draft.
whoever wants to be there can be there, whoever can't make it, can't.
for those who aren't there, it makes no difference as they'll draft just like they would if its not a live draft.

at first, i didnt think so..but the more i think about it, i think it would. he'd be able to change his drafting strategy on the fly as opportunities arise.

C'mon Shawnee--it's not complicated. I won the first year, and I don't even understand how the FF scoring works.
Shawnee123 • Jul 23, 2009 7:11 pm
I really don't want to be snippy: it's not my game, I've never played, and certainly how you guys want to do it is fine. I just get sick of Pro Boogie Boy and his little inside track.

I love some competition, even fantasy competition, and think it would make the long winter football season more enjoyable...but if Boogie Man will bother me I shouldn't play because it's not my place to make this a pain in the ass for everyone else.

Next he'll be wantin' to use real money. And haggis.

;)

OK, I'll join the fantasy hatin' game, and maybe the fantasy football game.

It really does sound like fun! :)
jinx • Jul 23, 2009 8:13 pm
Shaw, my goal last year was to beat WHIP, just because he annoys the shit out of me. I beat him AND made the playoffs with a team he picked as one of the worst. Still feels good...

This year: The Mostly Dead. Helmet design by Jim Hjelm, I mean Helm.
Shawnee123 • Jul 23, 2009 8:19 pm
That is an admirable goal. And an admirable helmet. How y'all make those things? I don't even know where the FF is located on teh webz.

Now I want to play just to name my team and get a hjelmet, I mean helmet.

Oh hey, you wanna go over to an online poker site & play sometime? Play money only, I promise. (And the international banking industry hasn't yet figured out how to transfer haggis between checking accounts.) (No doubt they're working on it though.)

lumberjim • Jul 24, 2009 12:22 am
shaw....I would be honored to create a helmet for you.

email me a team name and design concept. I'll do my best for you.

I did design last year's champion's helmetImage( pete's rainbow ponies)....with jinx's collaboration, of course.
Shawnee123 • Jul 24, 2009 8:12 am
I'll have to think about my team name over the weekend. :)
Undertoad • Jul 24, 2009 2:12 pm
I'm in for hold-em, play money.

Or real money if it's Poker Stars and we're betting micro amounts, the 25-cent tables.

I have an account there with $5 in it.
Shawnee123 • Jul 24, 2009 2:16 pm
Let me know, guys. I love hold-em. MIGHT play for tiny money. Probably not tonight as I'm going to a friend's house, or plan to unless my headache and extreme fatigue gets worse. It would be way fun to get some dwellars hooked up for poker though. Hell, I might even drink a beer!
SteveDallas • Jul 24, 2009 2:57 pm
25 cent? No way.. I stick to the 4-cent/2-cent tables. Or, wait, you mean 25 -cent buyin for no-limit? I usually play limit.
lumberjim • Jul 24, 2009 9:58 pm
ok...league is created....draft day SUnday, August 9th.

I've invited the following people:

shaw
glatt
griff
pete
clobble
W.HI.P
zippy
plthijinx

shit. that's 13 people. there are only 12 spots.

FIRST COME FIRST SERVE!

i sent invites via PM or email if i had it.
Clodfobble • Jul 24, 2009 10:49 pm
If it fills up, someone can have my spot. I'm paying even less attention this year than I have in the past, and that's saying something. I did rank my draft picks already though, so I'm ready whenever the season starts.

elSicomoro • Jul 27, 2009 3:31 pm
Jim, I'm confused...we have two leagues running (Cellar and FB)? And I'm not in the Cellar one? No big deal...just want to know what I should be doing.
lumberjim • Jul 27, 2009 4:15 pm
I set the Facebook one up just to see what it was about......sent invites.....i think.

but no one joined...until you did. you want to be on the cellar league. I over-invited and all 12 slots are full. clodfobble may want to give up her spot, though.....

sorry for the confusion.
Undertoad • Jul 27, 2009 4:17 pm
Is there a 16 slot lig?
Shawnee123 • Jul 27, 2009 4:33 pm

I don't see any options for it on the free version.
Clodfobble • Jul 27, 2009 5:30 pm
No way Shaw, you're actually interested in doing it! I'm seriously only holding my spot because I've done it in years past to get the numbers up to 12 participants. I've got way too much to do, I positively assure you I will pay no attention to any football games played this year, real or fantasy. LJ, how do I give my spot to syc?
elSicomoro • Jul 27, 2009 6:35 pm
Could she drop and then I could go in?

(Thanks, Clod! I love you...in a platonic way.)
Clodfobble • Jul 27, 2009 6:46 pm
Ah, I figured out how to quit the league. Syc, there should be a spot open now.
elSicomoro • Jul 27, 2009 6:57 pm

Clodfobble • Jul 27, 2009 8:32 pm

Shawnee123 • Jul 27, 2009 10:26 pm

W.HI.P • Aug 11, 2009 12:17 am
i've done pretty well predicting the winner of these leagues, so i'll have another go at it.

central

ruffriders
how tf did you get such a good team.
not only are you gonna win this division, but you're odds on favorite to win it all.

whip
i'd have a better shot if this was an online draft.
not much to do here but watch what falls in your lap.
i lack at qb, so it'll be tough to compete.

bullies
not bad at all, you've got a well rounded team.
if it wasn't for ruffriders, you'd be able to win this division.

goats
i would have thought you'd be a contender based on your past goats.
this is does not look good for you.
drew brees should have another good year, and you've got some wide recievers, but you're non-existant at running back, and you hold one of the weakest defences in the nfl....

east

eaglegreen
again, you're a competitor.
you will compete for this division, but you're out-classed by ruffriders team.

troop
you've got just as much possibilities as eaglegreen at winning this division

sysadmins

you have no qb.... you'll have to get one, or you will be bel;ow .500

rainbow
its not really gonna work for you.
you have too many players that shouldn't be in your roster...make some changes or you'll lose more games than you win.

west

riverrats
nice team, you're the favorite in this division.
you lack 1 running back, but other than that, you're elite.

warbird
you have an average team, and only due to the lack of serious opponents in your division can you have hope

mostlydead

no running backs, trade for one at least....also, kurt is questionable at qb, and your back-up is mediocre.

sycamore
no wide recievers, no running back, gives you the worst record in the cellar league 2009

I'm on a league. Both my QB have a bye this week. What are the odds? Sucks. I dropped a deadbeat TE and pick up Favre. Now I have three QB's... Donovan who is out to an injury, Matt something or other who is a so-so QB and then Brett himself (I was surprised he was even available).

This is the third year I've been playing. First year I placed 4th, second year I was dead last and so far this year I am 2-1-0.

Nothing is sure. I thought LenDale White would contribute something, but he gave me a big old goose egg. This guy could too.

Favre had so much time in the pocket... how much time did he have?

= He had enough time to prepare a cup of coffee with cream and sugar... but not enough time to wipe up the single drop of coffee that landed outside his cup

= He had enough time to do a full oil and filter change

= He had enough time to attend three therapy sessions and almost work out his issues with his father

= He had enough time to study his Vikings playbook and also the playbooks of all other teams that have thought about picking him up next off season

= Not only could he work out who to throw the ball to, but he had time to study the stats on "yards after catch" on each possible receiver

= After each hike, he could meet with 10 season ticket holders and sign 5 autographs

So I learned... the hard way. I should've figured it out with the Brett Favre parallel. What I mean is...

...I picked up Brett Favre by accident. He was just there in the pool of unused Quarterbacks. Couldn't believe he was really there. So what, he's old (40). Man's a great QB. Brought Green Bay to the Superbowl two years ago. I saw him and scooped him up (I dropped Donovan). My alternate QB is Matt Ryan who is doing rather well.

Great game J - at this moment it's Fred 71, you 70... but you have a half of Favre left, and Fred has 60 minutes of a TE who hasn't scored more than 6 since week one. It's a nail-biter! If Favre puts up another 10 points - you probably have it!

Glatt and UT will win their divisions and go to the playoffs. The 3rd division win spot will be mine if Fred loses his game next week and I win mine (he'd get the wild card) OR if Fred wins his game, he wins the division and I get the wild card.

Eh?
lumberjim • Dec 8, 2009 3:04 pm
i'd say yes.....looks like the 4 spots are sewn up at this point. just a matter of seeding now.
glatt • Dec 13, 2009 8:47 pm
this is by far my worst week yet.

it's AWN
jinx • Dec 17, 2009 11:14 am
All right Ferd, bring it. I think this is my year to be in the championships.
glatt • Dec 17, 2009 11:34 am
I'm an underdog, but I've got a good feeling about this one. Watch out, Tony.
Undertoad • Dec 17, 2009 11:45 am
Yeah yeah. Enjoy Maurice Jones-Drew in tonight's game. If he has a good night he'll put up 150 yards and a few TDs.
glatt • Dec 17, 2009 11:59 am

Maurice Jones-Drew's energy level: Jacksonville's star running back is finishing his first full season as the team's featured back, and he appears to be wearing down. He has averaged just 69 rushing yards and 3.4 yards per carry over the last four games. He averaged 96 rushing yards and 5.1 yards per carry in the first nine games. The Jaguars will need him fresh and ready to go in order to beat the Colts.

Bar graph at the bottom

you might do better starting Gore.

but then....I finished 5-9 so.....
jinx • Dec 17, 2009 12:53 pm
Yeah I sat him in my other league in favor of Wells. I'm hoping the Cards are all butt hurt from last week...
Undertoad • Dec 17, 2009 1:04 pm
They've been using Gore in a more limited role. Last week was a fluke.
Troll • Dec 17, 2009 1:10 pm
well, then you'd better wear the socks that have handgrips on them this weekend.
glatt • Dec 17, 2009 1:15 pm
you forgot to take your sock puppet off

I really wasn't sure it was you until jinx told you to get back to work, then this confirmed. I thought I was giving someone I didn't even know a rash of shit. Glad to know it was you. :)

So whats the line on the Cellarbowl?
lumberjim • Dec 18, 2009 1:18 am
jinx and plyhijinx are even money

tony is laying 6 vs glatt

my money is on jinx and tony.

parlay bet of $100 pays $630

step right up step right up.....

.....does that sound like i know what I'm talkin' aboot?
lumberjim • Dec 18, 2009 1:21 am
in related news: Jones Drew scores 26 points (surprisingly NOT his season high.....33, 31, 29 point games make this #4)

...so my mushness is confirmed even through a sock puppet filter.....
glatt • Dec 18, 2009 8:46 am
UT's probably feeling pretty over-confident right now. I've got him right where I want him.

i've done pretty well predicting the winner of these leagues, so i'll have another go at it.

how tf did you get such a good team.
not only are you gonna win this division, but you're odds on favorite to win it all.

whip
i'd have a better shot if this was an online draft.
not much to do here but watch what falls in your lap.
i lack at qb, so it'll be tough to compete.

bullies
not bad at all, you've got a well rounded team.
if it wasn't for ruffriders, you'd be able to win this division.

goats
i would have thought you'd be a contender based on your past goats.
this is does not look good for you.
drew brees should have another good year, and you've got some wide recievers, but you're non-existant at running back, and you hold one of the weakest defences in the nfl....

east

eaglegreen
again, you're a competitor.
you will compete for this division, but you're out-classed by ruffriders team.

troop
you've got just as much possibilities as eaglegreen at winning this division

sysadmins

you have no qb.... you'll have to get one, or you will be bel;ow .500

rainbow
its not really gonna work for you.
you have too many players that shouldn't be in your roster...make some changes or you'll lose more games than you win.

west

riverrats
nice team, you're the favorite in this division.
you lack 1 running back, but other than that, you're elite.

warbird
you have an average team, and only due to the lack of serious opponents in your division can you have hope

mostlydead

no running backs, trade for one at least....also, kurt is questionable at qb, and your back-up is mediocre.

sycamore
no wide recievers, no running back, gives you the worst record in the cellar league 2009

I'm taking a clobbering. Damn it to crap.
lumberjim • Dec 20, 2009 7:57 pm
It will be totally bogus if the warbirds win this. plthjinx is CLEARLY not managing his team.
Griff • Dec 20, 2009 8:07 pm
*sigh* Just got my team squared away in time for elimination...
glatt • Dec 20, 2009 8:46 pm
My plan of making Tony feel secure is working perfectly. He probably thinks he's going to win. But Jacobs hasn't played yet. This is going to be one to tell the grandchildren.
Griff • Dec 20, 2009 9:16 pm
Okay you put him to sleep, time to drop the hammer.
bluecuracao • Dec 21, 2009 1:48 am
I have to admit this is has been tough for me--my research had produced some high-scoring games, but luck just wasn't on my side! Oh well, may the best win...
glatt • Dec 22, 2009 12:38 pm
Well, all right then.

Good job, Tony!
Undertoad • Dec 22, 2009 1:55 pm
Thanks man now I get to lose to Fred.

The line isn't in yet but I think the guru is pointing at me being the favorite.

The guru is saying that several of my players get an advantage against bad opponents.

Of course we know about how crappy the guru is... it will be a good final
jinx • Dec 22, 2009 2:02 pm
I just looked and it has you over Ferd 126-107. I wouldn't bet either way on this one...

Good season y'all!
Griff • Dec 22, 2009 9:29 pm
Damn fine season. Good luck fellas!

if that's the case I apologize for that comment. It seemed to me that you had started players on bye weeks and injuries since about week 8....and having not heard from you, I assumed you had lost interest.

After looking at it closer....i see changes made along the way, and I retract my statement. It will in fact NOT be bogus if you win.

mea culpa
plthijinx • Dec 23, 2009 3:01 pm

for the championship!

I bought a Shamwow to award to the winner of the football pool...but that's all fucked up and no way to tell who the winner is at this point....so I would like to offer it to the Champeen of this here game.

also,,,Ferd....the cowboys cut Nick Folk....you need a new kicker, stat.

sham wow to the winner!

WOW!
Undertoad • Dec 27, 2009 5:22 pm
This game is great in progress, and watching it and the Eagles game at the same time is practically surreal. We're exchanging the lead constantly, and it's all dependent on the Eagles - Fred having Eagles WR Jackson, TE Celek and the Eagles defense, and me having Eagles K Akers. All our other players are not doing too much.

I had the lead 80-79, now there's a big 35 yard pass to Celek and it's Fred 82-80!
Undertoad • Dec 27, 2009 5:24 pm
Ohhh! Celek big TD now it's Fred 93-81.

Can't think there will be enough defense adjustments to make a difference...
Griff • Dec 27, 2009 8:22 pm
Dude!!!???? Your kicker!!!!
glatt • Dec 27, 2009 8:52 pm
What a close game. It could go either way. In his last 6 games, Fred's kicker hasn't scored more than 6 points. If he plays the same in this gaem, UT wins. If he has a slightly better than average game, Fred can win. It's close.

Edit: Oops. Wait. I just saw that Dallas had cut that kicker. UT won!
lumberjim • Dec 27, 2009 10:48 pm

ps....

THE SHAMWOW IS IN THE MAIL.

I AM NOT DISAPPOINT

I attribute my success to the luck of the draft, which gave me three great RBs right outta the box; and also to Fred's inability to pay close attention to the situation.
bluecuracao • Dec 28, 2009 1:32 am
Congrats UT!
