Do you like Cake?

lumberjim • Jul 19, 2009 9:16 pm
I like Cake.

I think the rhythm section is proper, and their restrained use of brass is acceptable to me.

They have a very distinctive sound. Driving beat. Gets inside and cranks things up a bit.
Undertoad • Jul 19, 2009 11:10 pm
A lot of people don't like the guy's lazy/talky/rappy/singy style, but after I heard the bass I never noticed it again.
ZenGum • Jul 20, 2009 12:38 am
I like the sound, but a lot of their stuff, well, sounds the same.

Maybe they have stuff that doesn't sound like the "Typical Cake Sound" but I haven't heard it. Or I have heard it and didn't realise that it was Cake because it didn't have the Typical Cake Sound.
Happy Monkey • Jul 20, 2009 2:15 am
The cake is a lie.
sofiabags • Jul 20, 2009 4:49 am
of course, i love Schwarzwaelder Kirschtorte
Griff • Jul 20, 2009 6:37 am
Oh yes, love Cake. Little Griff is working on "Guitar".

There are some odd covers out there Zen that don't have the Cake sound but I prefer the sameness because its a lot different than everybody elses sameness. I love the humorous spirit of their stuff.
Trilby • Jul 20, 2009 7:59 am
I am disappointed in this thread. I thought there would be cake.

Haggis, despite (or because of) knowing exactly what you mean and agreeing entirely.

I'll take Cake thank you very much.

I'm not sure if the Chuck theme song is performed by Cake or just a rip off of Cake, but it's all Cake.

It's real Cake--the main theme from "Short Skirt, Long Jacket."

Cake is a drug invented by satirical (and controversial) Brass Eye.

Non-Brits won't recognise any of the people, but they are all public figures here and were mightily annoyed that they'd been taken in. Shattner's Bassoon still makes me laugh, as does Bernard Manning - the only time I've ever laughed at him in my life.

short skirt/long jacket and comfort eagle are my favorite of theirs, but the only album of theirs i have is comfort eagle.
that war pigs cover is brilliant though.
Clodfobble • Jul 29, 2009 7:54 am
Wait, what? I'm quite certain you totally dissed Cake as mainstream and plebian just a few years ago. Ah, youth.
glatt • Jul 29, 2009 8:30 am
I just looked it up, and you're right. Ibby referred to them as a "shitty" band here and said "you lose big points for [liking] ... cake." here

Nice to see you coming around on that point, Ibram.

So what do you think of the South? ;)
Ibby • Jul 29, 2009 9:44 am
yeah okay dont throw things back at me that i said when i was fifteen. i betchya i could find a BUNCH of stupid things you lot said at fifteen.
Undertoad • Jul 29, 2009 9:47 am
Musical taste should vary throughout one's life, if one is an active listener.

Oh, I said a tremendous amount of stupid stuff at 15, but it will be hard to find. I didn't scratch it into the cave wall unless it was really important. That was more Grog's style. Stupid Cro-Magnon.

I was just teasing--the important thing is to remember that when you are 22, you will look back at what you are saying now and think you were just as stupid. And the same goes for 25, 28, etc. You are never at the end of the road until you're dead. :)
Shawnee123 • Jul 29, 2009 10:16 am
You'd have to get ahold of my extensive teenage diaries, Ib. We didn't have no fancy-schmancy interwebs. Even I'M afraid to look back and read those! ;)
Ibby • Jul 29, 2009 10:26 am
i've definitely been listening to a LOT lately i wouldnt have been caught dead liking a couple years ago (or even just a few months ago). Right now I'm diggin' on The Boy Least Likely To, Neutral Milk Hotel, Arctic Monkeys, and of Montreal, just to name a few.

It wasn't stupid, it was your honest opinion at that time. Time is constantly changing, and opinions are adjusted with experience.

[Some people won't get this joke. You are probably better off.]

New keyboard please.
And pass the scratching stick. I wanna write something.

Oh that's right. I'm supposed to be hunting and gathering. GRUNT GRUNT(as she leaves the cave)

Cake is coming to the Mann Music Center on Wednesday, September 15th at 7:30.

I think I'm going to go and see if I can either get a cheap Gen Admin ticket after it starts, or just hang out outside the fence and listen.

You must go then. To do anything else would be to go against destiny.
jimhelm • Sep 16, 2010 5:26 pm
So, I went.
By myself.

It was the weirdest, loneliest thing I've ever done. Everyone kept insisting that I go do stuff though... 'do the things you like, even if you don't feel like doing it'....which I didn't... so, I google chatted with my son through most of it, and eventually started enjoying the show.

It was a really good show, and the singer does a kind of 'stand up' thing in between songs.

Cake rocks.
glatt • Sep 16, 2010 7:38 pm
glad you eventually enjoyed the show.
Griff • Sep 16, 2010 8:01 pm
Well done Jim.

I'll pull an old one out - “A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.”
Lao Tzu

I'd like to add that the first step is most often the most difficult as well.

Good Job. Hang in there.

I met a lady tonight that was at the concert also. We figured out that she had been sitting in the boxes right in front of my seat with her boyfriend. He thought he wouldn't like Cake, but by the end of the show he was into them.

They gave a fuji apple tree to a guy in the audience. Brought him up on stage and made him take this long vow to plant it, and care for it, and send pictures in to their website.

It was hilarious.

But not as lousy as doing nothing again, ever.

I've been in a mostly foul mood for about the last 11 weeks. Last night, desperately wanted to go and do something on the violent side, but legal (squash is the one activity in my life that easily fits into this category) , but didn't particularly feel like talking to anyone or having to answer the 'how are you?' question. Got there, all of the usual crowd had cancelled, so I played by myself. It was great. I didn't have to talk to anyone and still got to smash something against a wall without being hauled away by the police. After that, logged on and had a great chat with Ali and Ducks. WIN, WIN.

And my point: doing stuff by yourself can be GREAT.
classicman • Sep 22, 2010 9:02 am
Doing things alone can be great. Take walks, flip channels while pretending to watch tv, shopping - either food or fun, building/fixing stuff around the house, landscaping maintenance ...

Learning to be alone and do things alone can be very powerful and productive.

Good for you Casi - I used to play racquetball when I was younger and loved to do that when the place was empty - Great stress relief.
